My Fiancé Let His Mistress Steal My Masterpiece Novel Cover

My Fiancé Let His Mistress Steal My Masterpiece

Every night for three weeks, I waited until Lucian was asleep, then stole the midnight hours for a wedding canvas no one knew existed. Two figures dissolving into light—unsafe, untraditional, and unmistakably us. It was almost finished when his mistress took it and called it her own. Now the man I'm supposed to marry wants me to stay quiet while another woman wears my masterpiece like a crown. My hands are still stained with paint, my heart with something far sharper. I can expose the theft and shatter the wedding, or let her keep what I bled onto that canvas.

Chapter 3

The rain had soaked through my coat by the time I reached the apartment. I didn't take it off.

I walked straight to the studio. Turned on one lamp. Just one. The kind of light that made everything look like it was underwater.

The wedding painting was still on the easel. Two figures dissolving into light. I stood in front of it for a long time. My hair was dripping onto the floor. I could hear each drop.

I didn't cry.

I sat down on the paint-stained stool and pressed my fingertips together. Thumb to thumb. Index to index. All the way down. I pressed until the color drained out of them. Until they were white and bloodless and mine.

*A stray dog. Cheapest labor. She'll do what she's told.*

The words didn't hurt the way I thought they would. They landed somewhere deeper than hurt. Somewhere quieter.

Hours passed. The rain slowed. I could hear a truck downshifting on the wet street. Somewhere a garbage truck. Somewhere a life.

Around four in the morning I stood up.

I walked to the easel and lifted the canvas off it. My hands were steady. I carried the painting to the far wall and turned it. Face to the plaster. Two figures pressed against a wall in the dark, holding each other where no one would ever see.

I put a fresh canvas on the easel.

Lucian wanted the competition piece by the end of the month. He'd said it like a demand. I picked up a clean brush.

My fingers knew what to do even when the rest of me didn't.

---

She came the next afternoon.

I heard the elevator, then heels on the hardwood. I didn't look up. I already knew.

"Oh — you're here." Violeta's voice was the same voice from the car. Light. Warm. Poisoned honey. "Lucian said the studio was quiet during the day."

She drifted in like she'd been invited. Camel coat, silk scarf, that same effortless perfect. She set a small handbag on the drafting table where I kept my sketches. Right on top of them.

"I hope I'm not interrupting." She said it without pausing to hear an answer. She trailed her fingers along the edge of Lucian's supply cabinet. Then along the back of the leather chair by the window. Touching everything. Marking it.

She sank into the chair. Crossed her legs. Sighed.

"Would you be a dear and get me a coffee? Oat milk. No sugar." A small smile. "I know where everything is, but you're already up."

I wasn't up. I was sitting at the easel with a wet brush in my hand.

I set the brush down. Wiped my fingers on the rag. Walked to the kitchen.

The espresso machine hissed. I watched the crema build. I steamed the oat milk to the temperature she probably preferred without ever having asked. I carried it back on a saucer.

She took it without looking at me. "Thank you, sweetheart."

Her eyes went to the wall. To the canvas turned backward.

"What's that one?"

"Nothing," I said. "A study."

"Hmm." She sipped. "Lucian mentioned you came from — foster care, was it?"

"Yes."

"How brave." She tilted her head. Her hair fell in a perfect line. "Was it terribly violent? One hears such stories."

I looked at her. Really looked. Her lipstick was the color of a bruise about to bloom.

"It was cold," I said.

"Mm." She smiled like I'd confirmed something. "Well. Look at you now."

She stayed two hours. She asked me to bring her a throw from the couch. Then to close the blinds because the light was in her eyes. Then to open them again. I did all of it. My hands stayed steady. Each time I turned my back, I could feel her smile sharpen behind me, like a blade being drawn along a stone.

When she finally left, she squeezed my wrist on her way out.

"You're such a good girl," she said.

I stood in the doorway until the elevator closed. Then I went back to the easel and painted for six more hours without stopping.

---

The first article came out that Friday.

*Artforum Online.* A soft profile. Violeta in Lucian's studio, perched on the leather chair with a glass of red wine, one hand resting on a stack of blank canvases like she'd just set down the brush. The caption underneath: *The Woman Behind the Work: Violeta Russell on serving as muse to Lucian Palmer's most celebrated period.*

I read it standing in the kitchen. I read it twice.

> *"He paints me even when he's not painting me," she says with a private smile. "Every canvas since Paris has been, in some sense, a letter home."*

I set the phone down on the counter. Face down.

More came. A photograph in *Cultured*. A quote in the *Times* weekend section. She was everywhere. Draped across the mythology like she'd woven it herself.

And the paintings — my paintings, the ones I'd bled sleep and years into — began to belong to two people. Neither of them me.

At the next gallery event, I stood beside a canvas I had built stroke by stroke over four months, and I listened to a critic tell Violeta that her *presence in the work* was unmistakable. She laughed and touched his arm and said, *Oh, you flatter me.* Lucian stood behind her with his hand at the small of her back.

I didn't correct anyone.

I went home. I turned another canvas to the wall. I picked up a fresh brush.

My hands were steady.

Somewhere underneath, something was already learning how to leave.
