Chapter 2

Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse suite.

I sat at the glass dining table, staring at the untouched croissant on my plate. My phone vibrated endlessly against the marble counter.

New York’s elite circle had exploded overnight.

Every news outlet, every gossip blog, and every society group chat was dominated by the same headline: *Ruby Miller Trades Billionaire Fiancé for Mystery Musician at the Altar.*

A porcelain cup slid into my field of vision.

"Black coffee." Simon took the seat across from me. "No sugar, as requested."

"Thank you." I wrapped my fingers around the warm ceramic.

He wore a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. He had spent the entire night in the adjoining suite, keeping the door firmly shut. He never once crossed the line.

"The press is having a field day," I noted, gesturing to my buzzing phone.

"Let them talk." Simon took a sip of his own coffee. "They are discussing your audacity, not your humiliation. That was the goal, was it not?"

"It was." I studied his calm expression. "Are you regretting this?"

"Not at all." He set his cup down. "This marriage can just be an agreement, Ruby. We can set whatever terms you need. But no one will ever make you a joke again."

A strange warmth settled in my chest.

For the first time in twenty-four hours, I felt entirely respected. Not handled. Not managed. Respected.

"I appreciate that, Simon."

"Finish your breakfast," he instructed smoothly. "You have battles to fight today."

He was right.

An hour later, I stepped out of the hotel lobby. The crisp morning air hit my face, but before I could hail a cab, a black SUV slammed its brakes at the curb.

The rear door flew open. Kalen stormed out.

His suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled. The polished CEO mask was completely gone.

"Ruby!" He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist.

I yanked my arm away instantly. "Do not touch me."

"How could you do this?" His face twisted in disbelief. "How could you marry someone else so fast? You love me."

"I loved the man I thought you were." I kept my voice perfectly level. "The moment you left, we were done."

"You are throwing a tantrum." He ran a hand through his hair. "A fake marriage to a hired hand just to get back at me."

"It is a legal, binding marriage."

"Annul it. Today." Kalen stepped closer, his jaw tight. "I came back for you. I expected you to be waiting so we could fix this."

"You expected me to be crying in my dressing room."

The passenger door of the SUV opened. A driver hurried around the back, pulling a wheelchair from the trunk.

Bella emerged.

She slumped into the chair, a thick blanket draped over her legs. Her eyes were wide and brimming with fresh tears.

"Ruby, please do not be angry with him," Bella whimpered, rolling forward. "I was just so afraid of losing him. My leg... the pain was unbearable."

She reached out, clutching Kalen’s jacket.

Kalen immediately softened, placing a protective hand on her shoulder. He looked back at me, waiting for the jealousy. He waited for me to scream, to demand he let her go.

I just stared at them.

"You flew across an ocean for a phantom pain," I stated flatly.

Kalen frowned. The absence of my usual desperation unsettled him.

"She was terrified, Ruby. She needed support."

"And now she has it." I adjusted my purse on my shoulder. "Enjoy your life together."

"I had my team look into him!" Kalen shouted as I turned away. "Your new husband. He is a ghost, Ruby. Some old-money nobody with zero corporate footprint. You ruined our merger for a piano player!"

"He stayed," I replied over my shoulder. "That makes him twice the man you are."

I left them on the sidewalk and took a car straight to the Miller estate.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open before I even reached the porch. My mother stood in the foyer, her face a mask of pure fury.

She did not offer a hug.

"You lost your mind," she hissed.

"I saved our dignity." I walked past her, dropping my keys on the console table.

"You threw away the Thorne alliance!" My mother followed me into the living room, pointing a trembling finger at my back. "Do you know what this means for the company? You married a nobody!"

My father stood by the fireplace, swirling amber liquid in a crystal glass.

"We could have spun the narrative, Ruby," my father argued, his tone heavy with disappointment. "A temporary postponement. A medical emergency. Now you are legally bound to a stranger."

"A stranger who prevented this family from becoming a permanent punchline."

"You are a Miller," my mother snapped. "You have obligations to this family. You had the perfect wealthy alliance, and you threw it in the garbage."

I squared my shoulders. The years of perfect obedience vanished in an instant.

"I am not a bargaining chip." My voice rang clear across the quiet room. "I decide my own life."

"You will annul this farce by tomorrow," my father ordered.

"No."

The front doorbell chimed, cutting through the heavy silence.

The housekeeper hurried down the hall. A moment later, Simon stepped into the living room.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit today. His presence instantly dominated the space, forcing my parents into a stunned silence. He did not look like a hired musician. He looked like a king inspecting his domain.

"Good morning," Simon greeted, his tone polite but entirely unyielding.

My father bristled. "Who let you in?"

"I came to collect my wife." Simon stopped beside me, offering his arm.

Before my father could launch another insult, heavy footsteps echoed in the foyer. Kalen marched into the house, ignoring the startled housekeeper.

"We are not finished, Ruby," Kalen demanded, stopping dead when he saw Simon.

Kalen glared at the man who had taken his place. "You think you won?"

Simon did not flinch. "I was unaware we were playing a game."

A sharp buzz interrupted the tension.

Simon pulled his phone from his pocket. He glanced at the screen, his expression shifting into something unreadable.

"Trouble?" I asked quietly.

"An invitation to the family heir meeting," Simon murmured, just loud enough for me to hear. "It seems my quiet life is officially over."

Across the room, Kalen’s phone chimed with a breaking news alert.

Kalen pulled his device from his pocket. He stared at the screen.

The color rapidly drained from his face. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"This is impossible," Kalen choked out, his eyes darting from his screen to Simon’s calm face.

My mother frowned. "Kalen, what is it?"

I looked at Kalen’s trembling hand. The screen was bright, the headline blaring in bold black text.

*Simon Mercer: The Hidden Heir to the Mercer Financial Conglomerate Steps into the Light.*

The room plunged into absolute silence.

Simon casually slipped his phone back into his jacket pocket. He looked directly at Kalen, a faint, chilling smile touching his lips.

"Shall we go, darling?" Simon asked me.
