Chapter 5

I sat at my desk with a black leather notebook.

Inside were thirty names. Hedge fund founders, board chairs, private equity partners. Powerful men and women who had only met Clark because I brought him to their tables.

I picked up the phone. I made every call myself.

"Clark Stevens no longer represents Lane Enterprises in any capacity, and I would not consider his involvement a reflection of this family's judgment."

I said the exact same line, thirty times over.

I didn't explain. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't offer any gossip.

"Understood, Saylor," Arthur Vance said from Goldman Sachs.

"Thank you for the heads-up," Marcus Cole said from his private firm.

*Click. Click.*

One by one, the lines went dead. Every door I had ever opened for Clark swung shut. They closed with the heavy, airtight thud of a vault locking from the inside.

Manhattan loves a scandal. But even more than a scandal, Manhattan loves pity.

By Thursday afternoon, the whispers reached a boiling point. Diane Whitfield called my private line. She didn't bother with hello.

"They're tearing you apart at the Carlyle Club luncheon," Diane said. Her voice was sharp, but there was real anger in it for me.

"Are they?" I adjusted my pen, lining it up with the edge of the leather blotter.

"They're calling Mallory a tragic angel," Diane said. "They say you drove Clark away with your cold attitude. They're telling people he chose true love over your family's money."

I leaned back in my chair. "Let them talk."

"Saylor, they're laughing behind their linen napkins. They're saying you got dumped for a girl with six months to live."

"Napkins get dirty, Diane," I said evenly. "I don't."

That night was Thursday.

For the last two years, Thursday had been our date night. Clark and I always went to Le Bernardin. We had a standing reservation at eight o'clock.

I didn't cancel it.

I took a town car downtown. The headwaiter bowed and led me through the dining room to our usual corner booth. The second place setting gleamed across the white cloth.

The waiter hesitated. "Will the gentleman be joining you, Miss Lane?"

"No," I said. "You can clear it."

He whisked away the extra plate and wine glass.

I ordered the wild striped bass and a glass of cold Chablis.

For three years, Clark had ruined these dinners. He had always complained about the small portions. He had talked too loud about football just to prove he wasn't intimidated by the room. He had checked his watch between courses.

Now, the dining room was quiet. The fish was delicate. The wine was crisp and clean on my tongue.

I looked at the empty space across the table.

My chest didn't hurt. I didn't feel lonely at all.

I felt peace. The quiet tasted better than any meal we had ever shared.

Clark, however, was living in a completely different reality.

He was still walking into social clubs. He was still handing out his old business cards. He was still telling people he was the Vice President of Lane Enterprises.

He honestly believed my silence was just a bad mood. He thought I was sitting at home, waiting for him to come back and forgive me.

He wanted to make a statement. He wanted to prove to Mallory, to the city, and to himself that he was a king in his own right.

On Monday morning, Robert Kane walked into my office.

He didn't knock. He carried a thick cream folder stamped with the crest of The Carlyle Hotel. He laid it flat on my desk.

"Nathaniel Cross sent this over from the hotel management an hour ago," Robert said. "Clark spent the entire weekend with their event director."

I opened the folder.

Clark had booked the entire rooftop terrace.

He had registered it as the "wedding of the century" for Mallory Fisher.

He had ordered a sixty-piece orchestra flown in from Europe.

He had hired a three-star celebrity chef for a seven-course tasting menu.

He had commissioned a custom couture gown from Paris, covered in thousands of hand-stitched crystals.

He had ordered imported Venetian glass centerpieces, walls of fresh white gardenias, and a private midnight performance by a Grammy-winning singer.

The estimated total was thirty-one million dollars.

At the bottom of the master contract, in bold, sweeping strokes, was Clark's signature.

Right under it, he had written: *Bill to Master Corporate Account, Lane Enterprises.*

He hadn't called the office.

He hadn't checked the accounts to see if they were open.

He hadn't called me once.

He was so drunk on three years of my money that he thought the name was his. He believed the Lane family was so desperate to protect its reputation that I would quietly pay a thirty-million-dollar bill just to avoid a scene in the newspapers.

"Nathaniel Cross is asking if he should run the deposit," Robert said quietly. "He wants to know if the account is cleared."

I traced the edge of the contract with my fingernail.

"Tell him the Lane office has received the file," I said. "Tell him nothing else."

Robert blinked. A slow, knowing look crossed his face. "Saylor... are you sure?"

I closed the folder and slid it back to him.

"Let him plan his wedding, Robert," I said softly. "Let him order every single flower."
