Chapter 3

Katalina crouched down in front of me again.

I hadn't moved. My knee was still on the pavement. My palm was still bleeding. The copper taste in my mouth had gone flat and warm.

She held her phone up. Screen first. Inches from my face.

I blinked.

It was a journal page. A published paper. Clean white margins, the kind of formatting I recognized from a hundred peer-review submissions. The title was different — clinical, sanitized, stripped of the field language I'd used in my notes. But the abstract underneath it.

I read it once.

Then again.

My patient cohort parameters. My intake methodology. My dosage adjustment protocols for patients with no consistent pharmacy access. The exact screening criteria I'd developed in month four when the original framework kept failing in high-altitude rural conditions.

Three years of my life, formatted into eleven paragraphs, with Katalina Dixon's name at the top.

"Already peer-reviewed," Katalina said pleasantly. "Already secured my appointment. Your data did wonderful things for my career."

The air left my body.

Not the way it had when I hit the ground. That had been sudden, physical, something I could locate and name. This was different. This was the kind of leaving that doesn't make a sound.

I thought about the flooded creek. Month twenty-two. Water up to my thighs, my satchel held above my head with both arms shaking, seven notebooks sealed in plastic bags inside because I knew — I knew — that if I lost them, the patients who'd trusted me with their bodies and their time would lose something they could never get back.

I thought about the candle I'd written by in month nine when the generator failed for eleven days straight.

I thought about every entry I'd dated in the margin. Every chain-of-custody log. Every name.

I opened my satchel.

My hands were shaking. My palm left a smear of blood on the canvas strap. I reached inside and pulled out notebook three — the one that covered months ten through sixteen, the densest period of the trial, the one with the most critical dosage data.

I held it up.

The pages were full. Dated in the top right corner of every entry, the way I'd done since medical school. My handwriting — the cramped, slanted script that Dr. Thomas had always complained was illegible until you learned to read it. Observations, corrections, patient responses, adjustments. A record of every decision I'd made and why.

I didn't say anything. I just held it there.

Katalina looked at it.

Then she looked at the crowd.

Then she laughed.

It was a light sound. Almost cheerful.

"Field notes from a nobody," she said. "Versus a published paper with my name on it." She tilted her head slightly. "Which do you think this hospital will believe?"

She reached down and snapped the notebook from my grip. Not violently. Almost casually. She dropped it back into my satchel the way you'd return something that wasn't worth keeping.

I watched it fall.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my wrist.

The crowd was quiet. Not the quiet of people who didn't care. The quiet of people who were watching and not moving, which is its own kind of answer.

I heard him before I saw him.

The sound of dress shoes on the entrance steps. Unhurried. Deliberate.

Dean came down the steps with his jacket on and his cuffs straight and his face arranged into the expression he wore when he was managing something inconvenient. He looked at me on the pavement — the blood, the satchel, the split lip — and his eyes moved over all of it the way you scan a room for the nearest exit.

He didn't come toward me.

He walked to Katalina.

He put both hands on her shoulders. Steadying her. Like she was the one who needed steadying.

Then his hands moved to his collar.

I knew what was coming before it happened. Some part of me knew. But knowing didn't stop it.

His fingers found the clasp at the back of his neck. He worked it open slowly. He lifted the chain free and held it up for a moment — just a moment — and the meteorite pendant caught the morning light. Dark gray. Irregular. The kind of stone that had traveled further than either of us ever would.

I had saved for four months to buy that necklace. I'd found the jeweler through a colleague, a craftsman who worked with actual meteorite fragments. I'd paid in installments. I'd given it to Dean the night before I left for Appalachia because I wanted him to have something that had survived falling.

Dean draped it around Katalina's neck.

His hands were steady when he fastened the clasp.

They were steady the whole time.

Katalina touched the pendant with two fingers and smiled.

I was still on the ground.

I didn't look away. I made myself watch every second of it, because I understood — with the cold, clear precision of someone who has just been handed an irrefutable diagnosis — that this was the last thing I needed to see before I stopped hoping.

Dean smoothed Katalina's collar.

He didn't look at me again.

I pressed my thumb hard against the scar on my wrist and thought about the patient who had lived.
