Chapter 1

The conference room smelled like burnt coffee and nervous sweat. I stood near the back wall with my arms crossed, watching Lane move across the small stage we'd rented for the all-hands meeting. He wore the navy suit I'd helped him pick out last year. The one that made him look like he belonged in boardrooms instead of the cramped startup office where we'd started three years ago.

Three years. I'd given him three years of my life. More than that, if I was honest. I'd given him connections I wasn't supposed to use. Money I'd funneled through accounts my father's people would never think to check. Late nights. Early mornings. The pearl necklace my mother left me, pawned at a shop in Belltown when his first investor fell through and he needed bridge capital he was too proud to ask for.

He never knew about the necklace. I never told him.

"We've built something incredible together," Lane said into the microphone. His voice had that warm, rehearsed conviction that made people lean forward in their chairs. I'd watched him practice this speech in our apartment last night. He'd asked me how it sounded. I'd told him it was perfect.

Around me, the staff—twenty-three people, most of them working for below-market pay because Lane promised them equity and a vision—watched him with the kind of hope that made my chest tighten. I knew most of their names. I knew who had student loans. Who had kids. Who'd turned down safer jobs because they believed in what we were building.

What Lane was building, I corrected myself. That's how he always phrased it in public.

"And today," Lane continued, pausing for effect, "I'm thrilled to announce that we're implementing a company-wide raise."

The room shifted. People sat up straighter. Someone near the front whispered, "Finally."

I pressed my thumbnail against my lower lip. Lane's jaw moved slightly—just a fraction—the way it always did when he was about to say something he'd rehearsed until it sounded effortless.

"Effective immediately, every single person in this room will receive an additional one dollar per month."

Silence.

Not the good kind. The kind that felt like air being sucked out of a sealed room.

Someone laughed. A short, confused bark of sound. Then nothing.

I watched Lane's face. He kept smiling. That same warm, confident smile. Like he'd just announced bonuses and stock options instead of an amount that wouldn't cover a single coffee.

"I know it might not seem like much," he said smoothly, "but it's a symbol of our commitment to shared growth. Every dollar counts. Every person matters."

The woman in front of me—Sarah, our lead designer—turned to her neighbor and mouthed something I couldn't hear. Her expression said everything.

I looked at Lane again. He was wrapping up now, transitioning into closing remarks about quarterly targets and team spirit. His hands moved in those practiced gestures he'd learned from watching TED Talks. I'd sat beside him on the couch while he studied them, frame by frame.

That tightness in my chest twisted into something else. Something colder.

I left before the meeting ended. No one noticed. They were all still sitting there, trying to figure out if they'd heard him correctly.

That evening, I sat in Lane's office after everyone else had gone home. The building was quiet except for the hum of the server room down the hall. I had access to the financial system—Lane had given me admin credentials months ago when I'd helped him clean up the books for an investor presentation.

I wasn't looking for anything specific. That's what I told myself.

But my memory for numbers is the kind that makes patterns jump out like neon signs. And there it was: a $20,000 monthly salary increase. Approved three days ago. Routed to a name I'd never seen on any department roster.

Kataleya Mendez.

I scrolled back. The payments went back years. Different labels every time: consulting fees, wellness stipends, project honoraria. Always the same amount. Always to her.

I pulled up the employee directory. Searched the name. Nothing.

I checked the contractor database. Nothing.

I sat there with my hand frozen on the mouse, staring at that name until the screen went dark.

When I cornered Gregory Park the next evening, he looked like he wanted to disappear into the floor. He kept fidgeting with his pen, clicking it open and closed while I asked him very simple, very direct questions.

"Who is Kataleya Mendez?"

He swallowed. "I don't know. I mean—I've never met her."

"But you've been processing payments to her for years."

"Lane told me to. He said it was confidential. Executive discretion."

I waited. Gregory was the kind of person who couldn't stand silence.

"She was his high school teacher," he said finally. "That's all I know. Well—and she's pregnant. Lane mentioned it once. Said she needed support."

The floor felt unsteady.

"Do you have an address?"

Gregory hesitated. Then he pulled up a file and wrote something on a Post-it note. His hand shook slightly as he handed it to me.

I sat in my car outside the office building for twenty minutes with that Post-it stuck to my dashboard. Next to it was the invitation to our engagement party. Two days away. Cream cardstock with gold lettering. My stepmother had helped me pick the design.

I made myself think it through. Really think. Lane had his flaws, but he wasn't cruel. There had to be an explanation. Maybe Kataleya was in trouble. Maybe she'd been a mentor to him and he was helping her out. Maybe—

I started the car.

The address was in Capitol Hill.
