Chapter 4

Vivian Cho called me on a Monday morning. Her voice was flat and professional. "It's done. Can you come in today?"

I was at her office by noon.

She had a conference room set up like a war room. Documents spread across the table in organized stacks. Her laptop open with spreadsheets color-coded by transaction type. She gestured to the chair across from her.

"Sit," she said. "This is going to take a while."

I sat.

Vivian walked me through it. Every line. Every transfer. Every lie.

The SoHo penthouse. $847,000 over three years. Lease payments disguised as equipment rentals. The address matched Sarai Weaver's residence exactly.

Tiffany & Co. purchases. $63,000. Itemized receipts for jewelry that never appeared on my finger.

The Porsche. $95,000. Registered under a shell company called Helix Solutions LLC. Marcos was listed as the sole officer. The insurance listed Sarai as the primary driver.

Conference travel. $284,000. Hotels in Paris, Barcelona, Singapore. Except Marcos never presented at conferences in those cities. I checked. Vivian had checked. He just went.

And then the Cayman Islands account. $1,150,000. Transferred in increments small enough to avoid automatic flags. Sitting there. Waiting.

Vivian slid the final summary across the table. "Total misappropriated funds: $2,347,000. Not including interest or opportunity cost."

I read the number. I felt nothing.

"This is courtroom ready," Vivian said. "I've tagged every source document. Cross-referenced every vendor. A prosecutor could win this case in their sleep."

"Good," I said.

She looked at me carefully. "Are you okay?"

"I'm perfect," I said.

I took the hard drive with all the evidence. I took the printed summary. I took the transaction maps with Marcos's signature on forty-seven separate approval forms.

I drove to my office. I locked everything in the vault behind my desk. The same vault where I kept my mother's jewelry and the original Stone Group incorporation papers.

Then I sat at my desk and stared at the wall.

Margaret knocked softly and came in with tea I didn't ask for. She set it down and didn't leave.

"Vivian called," she said quietly. "She told me it's finished."

I nodded.

"What do you need?" Margaret asked.

I looked at her. She had been with me for eight years. She knew my coffee order and my childhood nightmares and the exact tone of voice I used when I was about to fire someone.

"I need you to clear my calendar for tomorrow night," I said. "Tell them I have a personal commitment."

"Done," she said. She paused at the door. "Lorelei. You're doing the right thing."

"I know," I said.

But I didn't feel right. I felt cold.

That evening Marcos sent me a text. *Dinner Thursday? I miss you.*

I stared at the message. Three words. I miss you.

I typed back. *Can't wait. I love you.*

I hit send and felt nothing.

The next day I was in a meeting with our acquisition team when my phone buzzed. A calendar alert. Sterling Mitchell was presenting at a biomedical research conference in Boston next month. The agenda had just been published online.

I pulled it up during a break. There was his name. Session keynote. Topic: Breakthrough Applications in Neural Tissue Regeneration. And beneath it in smaller text: *Research made possible through unprecedented new private funding.*

I forwarded the link to Margaret. "Make sure this gets mentioned in the right circles," I wrote.

She replied immediately. "Already on it."

That night I went to a charity gala with Marcos. Black tie. The Plaza. Everyone who mattered was there.

We stood near the bar. Marcos had his hand on my lower back. He was talking to a Columbia dean about expansion plans. I smiled and sipped champagne and watched.

A colleague of Marcos's approached. Older man. Gray beard. He shook Marcos's hand.

"Saw the conference agenda for Boston next month," the man said. "Your MIT rival is on the keynote list."

Marcos's smile tightened. "Sterling Mitchell?"

"That's the one. Says he has unprecedented new private funding. Any idea where that came from?"

Marcos laughed. It sounded forced. "No idea. Probably some desperate tech billionaire who doesn't understand science."

The man nodded and moved on.

I felt Marcos's hand tense against my back. I looked up at him. "Something wrong?"

"No," he said quickly. "Just... Sterling Mitchell. He's always been a joke. I don't know who's dumb enough to fund him."

"Maybe they see something you don't," I said lightly.

Marcos looked at me. For just a second something flickered in his eyes. Suspicion. Confusion.

Then he smiled and kissed my temple. "Impossible. I see everything."

I smiled back.

Later that week I drove to Cambridge. It was late. Past eleven. But Sterling had texted me that they had a breakthrough and I wanted to see it.

The MIT lab was bright and humming. Two graduate students were at their stations. Sterling was at a microscope. He looked up when I walked in.

"You came," he said.

"You said it was important."

He gestured me over. "Look at this."

I looked through the eyepiece. Cells. Regenerating in real time. The damaged tissue was repairing itself.

"This is incredible," I said.

"This is because of you," Sterling said quietly.

I straightened and looked at him. His face was serious. Tired. Honest.

"It's because of your work," I said.

"No." He shook his head. "I've been trying to do this for six years. I had the theory. I had the skills. But I didn't have the tools. You gave me the tools. You gave me a chance."

I didn't know what to say.

Sterling pulled two cups from a cabinet. Gas station coffee. Still warm. He handed me one.

"Tell me something," he said. "Why the Stone Group? Why did your family build what they built?"

I blinked. No one ever asked me that.

I sat down on a lab stool. He sat across from me.

And I talked.

I told him about my grandfather. About starting with one factory and a dream. About my father who inherited an empire and never wanted it. About my mother who died when I was nine and left me a photograph and a beach and nothing else.

I told him about growing up in boardrooms. About being the only heir. About every choice being a headline.

I talked for three hours.

Sterling didn't check his phone. Didn't look away. Didn't interrupt.

When I finally stopped, the lab was quiet. The graduate students had gone home. It was just us.

"Thank you," Sterling said.

"For what?"

"For trusting me with that," he said.

I looked at him. At his serious eyes. At the way he held his coffee cup like it mattered.

"I should go," I said.

He walked me to my car. The Cambridge streets were empty. Cold.

"Lorelei," he said. "When this is over. When you've done what you need to do. Will you be okay?"

I looked up at him. "I don't know."

He nodded slowly. "If you need anything. I'm here."

I got in my car. I drove back to Manhattan.

And for the first time in weeks, I felt something.

It wasn't revenge. It wasn't anger.

It was something quieter. Something I didn't have a name for yet.
