Chapter 1

The wheels hit tarmac at JFK just after nine in the morning. Three years. I'd been gone three years, and the city looked exactly the same through the scratched oval window. Gray sky. Silver buildings. The kind of cold that bit through glass.

I pulled out my phone before we even taxied to the gate. My thumb found Daniel's name in my favorites. *Landed. Don't cook dinner — I'm surprising you at home. Can't wait to see your face.* I added a heart emoji. Pressed send.

The message delivered. No response.

I told myself he was in surgery. I told myself his phone was in a locker. I told myself a lot of things while I waited in the customs line with my duffel bag and a suitcase held together with zip ties.

Outside, I flagged a yellow cab. The driver loaded my bags and asked where to.

"Tribeca," I said. "Franklin Street."

The apartment I bought. The one I put entirely in his name before I left. The one I hadn't seen in three years but had paid for every month from a tent clinic in Uganda with Wi-Fi that cut out every time it rained.

I settled into the backseat and opened my phone again. Still nothing from Daniel. I switched apps. My insurance portal. I'd been meaning to update my stateside information for weeks. I logged in.

The screen loaded.

My thumb hovered over the claims tab. I tapped it.

The list populated slowly. Line by line. Charge by charge.

*Obstetric consultation. Prenatal ultrasound. First trimester screening. Pharmacy — prenatal vitamins.*

I blinked.

*Second trimester ultrasound. Glucose tolerance test. Rh factor screening.*

My heartbeat filled my ears.

Every charge was billed to my account. Every single one. Patient name: *L. Mitchell.*

I scrolled. Seven months. Seven months of charges. The oldest dated back to February. I'd still been in Kampala in February. I'd sent Daniel a care package in February. Coffee beans from a market vendor. A handwritten letter. A photo of me standing in front of the clinic with a kid who'd drawn me a picture.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. Hard. I felt my pulse under the skin. Steady. Fast. Real.

The cab driver glanced at me in the rearview. "You okay, miss?"

I looked up. We were on the FDR Drive. The East River was gray and flat beside us.

"Change of plans," I said. My voice came out calm. Clear. "Take me to Mount Albion Medical Center instead."

"You sure?"

"I'm sure."

He merged left.

I opened the hospital's website on my phone. Internal directory. I still had my login credentials. I typed in *L. Mitchell* and hit search.

One result.

*Mitchell, Lylah. Surgical Intern. Supervisor: Dr. Daniel Walker.*

I read it twice.

Then I closed my phone and watched the city slide past the window.

---

Mount Albion looked the same. Red brick. Glass doors. The same security guard at the front desk who waved me through without checking my badge because he still remembered my face.

I dragged my suitcase across the lobby. My duffel bag hung off one shoulder. I hadn't slept on the plane. I could feel every hour of it in my spine.

I took the elevator to the fourth floor. Surgical wing. My hallway.

The nameplate outside my office was gone. Just a blank metal slot. The door was unlocked. I pushed it open.

My desk was still there. My chair. The window with the view of the park. But everything else — my books, my framed diplomas, my coffee mug that said *World's Okayest Surgeon* that Daniel gave me as a joke — all of it was packed in cardboard boxes stacked against the wall.

I set my bags down. Sat in my chair. It still fit.

I opened my phone again. Pulled up the insurance portal. Stared at the name *L. Mitchell* until the letters stopped looking like letters.

Then I opened the hospital directory. Found her staff photo.

She was young. Twenty-four, maybe. Dark hair. Big eyes. The kind of smile people called sweet.

I looked at her face for a long time.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

Finally.

I answered.

"Ev!" His voice was warm. Practiced. "You're back! I'm so sorry I missed your text. I was in a meeting. Are you at the apartment?"

"No."

"Where are you?"

"My office."

A pause. Short. Careful.

"Oh," he said. "Listen, we should talk. Can you come by tonight? I'll make dinner. We have a lot to catch up on."

"We do," I said.

Another pause.

"Ev, I know this is—"

"Who's Lylah Mitchell?"

Silence.

Long.

Then he exhaled. "Okay. Yeah. We definitely need to talk."

"I'm listening."

"Not over the phone," he said. His voice shifted. Firmer. "Tonight. I'll explain everything tonight."

"Explain what? That you've been using my insurance to pay for your girlfriend's prenatal visits? That you gave away my job? That you—"

"Everleigh." His tone sharpened. "You've been gone for three years. Things changed. I changed. And I need you to understand that Lylah is in a very fragile place right now. She's depressed. She's struggling. And frankly, having you back in the Chief of Surgery role is going to make her work environment extremely stressful."

I stopped breathing.

"So I'm asking you," he continued, "as someone who used to care about me, to step down voluntarily. For her sake."

I looked at the boxes against the wall. At the empty nameplate slot outside my door.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist.

"Everleigh?"

I hung up.

I sat there for a full minute. Maybe two.

Then I opened the hospital's all-staff group chat. Three hundred and forty-seven members. Every doctor, nurse, resident, and administrator at Mount Albion.

I uploaded the insurance receipts. All of them. Every charge. Every date. Every line that said *Patient: L. Mitchell.*

I typed one message.

*For anyone wondering where I've been for three years: sub-Saharan Africa, saving lives. For anyone wondering where my insurance money has been for seven months: funding my fiancé's mistress's prenatal care. Her name is Lylah Mitchell. She's a surgical intern. Her supervisor is Dr. Daniel Walker. You're welcome.*

I hit send.

Then I picked up my bags, walked out of my office, and took the elevator back down to the lobby.

I booked a hotel room in Midtown from the back of another cab.

My phone started buzzing before we even hit the bridge.

I turned it off.

And for the first time in three years, I smiled.
