Chapter 4

The light turned red. I saw it. The color registered somewhere in my brain, filed away like a fact I'd deal with later. But my foot stayed on the gas.

The delivery truck came from the right. I heard the horn. Then the impact—metal shrieking, glass cracking, my whole body thrown forward against the seatbelt. The airbag exploded into my face. White powder. Chemical smell. Silence.

Then voices. Hands on my shoulders. Someone asking if I could hear them.

I nodded. My ears rang. My chest hurt where the seatbelt had caught.

"Don't move," a man said. "Ambulance is coming."

I sat in my crumpled car at the intersection of 34th Street and watched people gather on the sidewalk. Their phones were out. Recording. Always recording.

The EMTs arrived. They asked my name. My date of birth. Whether I'd hit my head. I answered everything. My voice sounded normal. Calm. Like I was filling out a form.

They loaded me into the ambulance. The doors closed. The siren started.

I stared at the ceiling and pressed my thumb against my ring finger. The pressure was the only thing that felt real.

---

Mount Sinai smelled like antiseptic and floor wax. They put me in a bay with pale blue curtains. A nurse took my vitals. A doctor came in with a tablet and kind eyes.

"Any pain?" she asked.

"My chest. From the seatbelt."

She nodded. Pressed gently along my ribs. "We'll do some imaging. Just to be safe."

They wheeled me to radiology. Then back to the bay. I lay on the narrow bed and stared at the ceiling tiles. Counted the small holes in the acoustic panels. Lost count. Started over.

The doctor returned. She pulled up a stool and sat down beside the bed.

"Good news. No fractures. No internal bleeding. You're very lucky."

I nodded.

She glanced at her tablet. "We ran a standard pregnancy test as part of the bloodwork. It came back positive."

The words didn't land at first. They hung in the air between us like something I was supposed to catch.

"What?"

"You're pregnant. About seven weeks, based on your hormone levels." She tilted the screen toward me. "We did a quick ultrasound while you were in imaging. Do you want to see?"

She didn't wait for an answer. The image filled the screen. A small dark oval. Inside it, a tiny flicker. White. Rapid. Persistent.

"That's the heartbeat," she said softly.

I stared at the screen. At the flicker that wouldn't stop. My hand moved to my stomach. Pressed flat against the thin hospital gown.

"I didn't know," I whispered.

The doctor smiled. "A lot of women don't at seven weeks. Have you been experiencing any symptoms? Nausea? Fatigue?"

I thought about the past month. The exhaustion I'd blamed on stress. The nausea I'd blamed on skipping meals. The way my body had felt foreign and heavy.

"I thought it was just—" I stopped. "Everything else."

She nodded. "Understandable. I'm going to print this for you. And I'll send you home with some information about prenatal care. You'll want to schedule an appointment with an OB within the next two weeks."

She handed me the printout. The image was small. Black and white. The flicker frozen mid-beat.

I held it carefully. Like it might dissolve.

"Thank you," I said.

After she left, I sat on the edge of the bed. My phone was in my purse on the chair. I pulled it out. Opened my messages.

Joaquin's last text was still there. *Can it wait? Slammed today.*

I called him.

It rang four times. Went to voicemail.

I hung up. Waited five minutes. Called again.

Voicemail.

I waited ten minutes. Called again.

Voicemail.

I typed a message. *I need to tell you something important. Please come to Mount Sinai.*

I stared at the words. Added: *Room 3B. Emergency department.*

I sent it.

Then I lay back on the bed. Held the ultrasound printout against my chest. Felt the paper crinkle under my palm.

Forty-seven minutes later, my phone buzzed.

Joaquin: *Dealing with something for Kennedi right now. Is it urgent? Can it wait until tomorrow?*

I read the message three times.

Then I set the phone face-down on the blanket.

I looked at the ultrasound again. At the small white flicker. At the proof that something inside me was still fighting to exist.

My hand moved to my stomach. Pressed gently. Carefully.

"I see you," I whispered.

The nurse came in to check my blood pressure. She wrapped the cuff around my arm. Pumped it tight.

"Are you okay, honey?" she asked. "Your pressure's a little elevated."

I nodded. "I'm fine."

She looked at me for a long moment. Then at the ultrasound printout still clutched in my other hand.

"Congratulations," she said softly.

I tried to smile. My face wouldn't cooperate.

She finished the reading. Made a note on her chart. "You're cleared to go home. Take it easy for the next few days. And call your OB."

"I will."

She left.

I got dressed slowly. My chest ached where the seatbelt had caught. My hands shook as I buttoned my coat.

I picked up my phone. Joaquin hadn't sent another message.

I slid the ultrasound printout into my purse. Zipped it closed.

Then I walked out of the emergency department into the cold October night.

The city was loud. Sirens. Horns. Voices.

I stood on the sidewalk and pressed my thumb against my ring finger.

The spot where a ring should have been.

The spot where I'd been waiting for two years.

I pressed until it hurt.

Then I raised my hand and hailed a cab.
