Chapter 2

The bakery smelled like brown sugar and yeast. It always did, no matter the hour. I pushed through the back door and the warmth hit me first, then the smell, and for one stupid second I almost felt safe.

Renata was at the center island, arms dusted white to the elbow. She looked up the moment I walked in. She didn't say anything. She just crossed the floor and pulled me into a hug that smelled like butter and flour, and I let her.

'He's alive,' I said into her shoulder.

'I know.' Her voice was flat. No surprise in it at all.

I pulled back. 'You know?'

'I never believed it.' She shook her head slowly. 'Not the cancer. Not the funeral. None of it. I didn't say anything because you needed to grieve and I didn't have proof. But I never believed it.'

I sat down hard on the stool by the counter. I told her everything. The SUVs on the lawn. Victor Holt and his court order. Devin in the half-fitted tuxedo, smiling at me like I was a minor inconvenience. His offer. The word allowance coming out of his mouth like he was doing me a favor.

And Gianna. The way she unclasped my mother's locket without asking. The way she bent down and fastened it around that dog's collar. The way she smiled.

Renata stood very still while I talked. Her jaw got tighter with every sentence. By the time I finished, her hands were gripping the edge of the counter hard enough to whiten her knuckles.

Then she grabbed a mixing bowl off the rack and slammed it down on the steel surface. The clang rang through the whole kitchen.

'We are not running,' she said.

I looked at her.

'You hear me, Camille? We are not packing boxes and handing that house over. We are burning everything down. His reputation. His deal. His whole pretty little story.' She pointed at me. 'Starting tonight.'

Something in my chest shifted. Not hope exactly. More like a door opening in a room that had been sealed shut for three years.

I touched my shoulder. Right where the scars started under my flannel shirt.

'Okay,' I said quietly.

I pulled out my phone. I started documenting. Every text Devin had ever sent me. Every medical invoice. Every wire transfer receipt from the years I spent sending money back from Alaska. Renata sat across from me with her laptop and we worked until two in the morning, building a timeline, pulling records, making a folder that told the true story of the last three years.

It felt like digging a grave. Except this one was for him.

---

Two nights later, I woke up at three a.m. and couldn't say why.

I lay in the dark of my apartment and stared at the ceiling. Something felt wrong in the way that has no explanation. I told myself it was nothing. I turned over. I closed my eyes.

The next morning I drove to the heritage house.

The back door was unlocked. I always kept it locked.

I walked through the kitchen slowly. Nothing looked disturbed. The table, the chairs, the window above the sink with the cracked caulk my mother always said she'd fix. Everything in its place.

Then I walked to the small back room.

The shelf was empty.

The urn was gone.

I stood there for a long time. Just looking at the empty space. There was a ring of undisturbed dust where the urn had sat for two years, a perfect circle, like a ghost of the thing that used to be there.

My knees hit the floor before I decided to kneel.

I don't know how long I was down there. The light through the window changed. My hands were flat on the cold hardwood and I couldn't make them move.

That was how Renata found me. She didn't say anything at first. She just got down on the floor next to me and put her arm around my shoulders and stayed there.

After a while she called the police.

Two officers came. They were polite and thorough and completely useless. No forced entry on record. No witnesses. The neighbor's security camera—I didn't know about it yet—sat unreviewed in a system no one had flagged. The officers wrote up a report and told me they'd follow up. I knew they wouldn't.

After they left, I sat on the back step with my hands around a cup of coffee Renata had made.

My mother's ashes were in Puget Sound. I knew it without knowing how I knew. The black water. The cold. All of it gone.

I pressed my fingers against my scarred shoulder and breathed.

I had nothing left to protect now.

Which meant I had nothing left to lose.

I looked out at the maple tree in the yard. Its leaves were just starting to turn.

'Get me a lawyer,' I told Renata.

She already had her phone out.
