Chapter 1

On Sunday evening, rain hit the tall windows of our craftsman home in Seattle.

Cassian sat across from me at the dining table, grading essays. We had lived together for five years and dated for eight. We were both professors at the university—the golden academic couple. Everyone expected our wedding next summer to be effortless.

I set a manila folder on the table between us.

"We need to talk about the house, Cass," I said.

He didn’t look up right away. He finished marking a sentence in red ink. Then he set his pen down and adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses.

"The house is fine, Violet," he said smoothly.

"My name still isn't on the deed," I said. My voice was level. "We used our joint savings for the down payment. My paycheck covered half. The lawyer sent the title documents two weeks ago."

Cassian smiled, but his eyes were hard. "A real partnership doesn't need paperwork, Vi. If you trusted me, you wouldn't need this."

"Trust isn't a legal title," I replied. "It’s basic finance."

"You’re keeping score again." He shook his head, sighing like an exhausted father. "It makes you sound cold. You reduce everything we’ve built to a transaction."

The air in the room thinned. The argument grew sharp and ugly. He called me controlling. I called him evasive. By ten o’clock, he took a blanket and slept in the guest room.

For the next three days, silence ruled our house. Monosyllabic answers. Separate meals. He left early for campus; I came home late. It was a cold war, and Cassian was waiting for me to apologize first. He always did.

On the third night, I couldn’t sleep.

The clock on the nightstand read 2:14 AM. The house was freezing. I opened my laptop and pulled up a relationship advice forum, looking for cases of contested property deeds.

On the front page, a viral thread caught my eye.

The post had thousands of upvotes. The title read: *My university professor bought me a home outright. He says true love has no rules.*

The poster’s name was Brittany Owens. According to her profile, she worked at a day spa in Ballard. I clicked through out of sheer, detached curiosity.

Her profile was a public diary. For eight months, she had documented a romance with an older academic. She posted photos of candlelit dinners in Belltown, weekend getaways to Whidbey Island, and pictures of a sleek new condo.

*He told me I deserve stability,* she wrote under a photo of a marble kitchen counter. *Paid in cash so nobody could ever take it from me.*

I scrolled down. And then my breath caught in my throat.

It was a photo of Brittany holding a glass of champagne. A man’s hand rested on her bare shoulder.

On his left ring finger was a custom platinum band with a beveled edge and an offset sapphire. I had sat in the jeweler's shop for three hours helping him design it.

Right above the knuckle was a two-inch jagged white scar.

A broken Pyrex dish had cut Cassian in our tiny graduate school kitchen seven years ago. I was the one who drove him to the clinic. I had pressed gauze against that wound while he cursed into my shoulder. I had traced that exact line with my thumb a thousand times in the dark.

My fingers turned completely numb.

I scrolled back through her feed.

May 14: a photo of him from behind at an oyster bar. Cassian had told me he was chairing a faculty committee meeting that night.

August 3: a selfie of Brittany in a luxury cabin. He had told me he was attending a symposium in Portland.

I sat in the dark for five minutes, completely still. My heart didn't race. It felt like ice water had replaced my blood.

I minimized the browser and opened an ongoing document on my laptop titled *Clarity*. I typed one sentence:

*I have been financing my own replacement.*

Then I opened our joint bank account.

My login still worked. I pulled the quarterly statements. Over the last six months, there were massive transfers routed to an obscure escrow service. The total was two hundred and forty thousand dollars.

It was almost the exact sum of my tenure-track salary contributions over the last eight years. The joint account was a hollow shell. He hadn't just cheated. He had drained my life's work to buy another woman a home.

I went to the King County public records site and searched the property address Brittany had tagged in Ballard.

There it was. A one-bedroom corner unit.

Sole owner: Brittany Owens.

I didn't yell. I didn't rush into the guest room and throw the laptop at his face.

Instead, I took screenshots. Every post. Every date. The photo of his hand with the scar. The deed. The wire transfer receipts. I saved them into a single, encrypted folder named *Barnes*.

Down the hall, the floorboards creaked. Cassian was waking up for his morning run.

I closed my laptop and set it neatly in my leather briefcase.

I stood up, walked into the kitchen, and turned on the kettle. I waited for the water to boil, steeped a mug of Earl Grey, and took a slow sip.

Then I put on my coat and walked out the door to work.
