The descent down the sweeping staircase of the Plaza Hotel felt like stepping onto a battlefield. Beside me, Oliver Sterling adjusted his cuffs, his sharp gray eyes fixed on the spectacle below. Four private security contractors flanked us, their presence parting the sea of Manhattan’s elite like a steel wedge.

The string quartet’s melody faltered and died into a discordant scrape of bows as we breached the ballroom floor. The sudden silence was deafening, save for the rapid-fire click and whir of paparazzi cameras pivoting toward the disturbance.

Maya’s breathless laughter died in her throat. She stood frozen in the center of the checkerboard marble, the heavy Walker diamond tiara gleaming in her dark hair, the ivory silk of my custom gown pooling around her feet. Beside her, the color drained entirely from Cason’s face. He took a half-step forward, his hand instinctively reaching out, but Oliver’s security detail smoothly formed a barricade between us.

"Sydney," Cason started, his voice a desperate, hollow rasp. "What are you doing? Be reasonable. Not in front of the press."

I didn't look at him. My gaze remained locked on Maya, whose knuckles were turning white as she clutched the skirts of the stolen dress.

"Mr. Grant is no longer authorized to hold Walker estate assets in his vault," Oliver announced, his voice carrying the lethal authority of a seasoned litigator. He held up a thick manila folder, the gold seal of the state court flashing under the chandeliers. "We have a court-ordered injunction for the immediate repossession of the Walker heirloom tiara, and the custom silk gown, which was purchased exclusively through Miss Walker’s personal trust."

Maya’s jaw trembled. A flush of mottled, ugly red crept up her neck. "You can't do this," she hissed, her doe-eyed victim act evaporating under the blinding flash of a dozen cameras. "I'm his wife! This is my wedding day!"

"You are wearing stolen property," I corrected, my voice dropping to an icy, devastating calm that echoed through the silent room. I stepped closer, the chill of the marble seeping through my soles. "Take it off, Maya. Or my security will assist you."

Cason’s chest heaved. "Syd, please. I'll write you a check. I'll buy it from you—"

"You don't have enough credit left to buy the veil, Cason," I cut him down, my eyes flicking over his rigid, defeated posture. I gestured to the back corridors. "The changing room. Now."

Humiliation radiated from Maya in palpable waves. Tears spilled over her lashes, ruining her meticulous makeup as the paparazzi surged forward, immortalizing her disgrace. Trembling, her fingers fumbled with the diamond pins in her hair. She shoved the million-dollar tiara into Oliver’s waiting gloved hands, practically choking on a sob before turning and fleeing toward the coatrooms to strip off the silk cage she hadn't earned.

I turned on my heel, leaving the suffocating heat of the ballroom behind.

The lobby air was crisp, but before I could reach the revolving doors, frantic footsteps echoed against the marble. "Sydney, wait!"

Cason’s voice cracked with a raw, bleeding regret. I didn't break my stride. Before he could close the distance, two towering men in immaculate dark suits stepped seamlessly from the shadows of the marble pillars. They didn't speak. They simply crossed their arms, forming an impenetrable wall of muscle and tailored wool. Malachi’s men.

I glanced over my shoulder one last time. Cason stood trapped behind the silent guards, his hands fists at his sides, his chest hollowed out as he realized the sheer magnitude of what he had thrown away. He was forced to turn back to the ballroom, back to his sobbing, ruined bride, while I walked out into the cool New York night.

I wore that certainty like a second skin as I ascended the grand staircase of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, representing the Bennett family at the annual pediatric foundation gala. My emerald velvet gown swept the stone steps, an unspoken homage to the night Malachi first saw me.

The voice was shrill, slurred with cheap champagne and desperation. I paused on the landing. Maya Silva blocked my path. She looked thinner, the edges of her manicured facade fraying. The rumors of her mounting debts to the loan sharks had already begun to whisper through the society grapevines.

She stepped into my personal space, her eyes wild, deliberately raising her voice to draw the attention of the blue-bloods lingering on the stairs.

"Playing dress-up for a dying invalid, Sydney?" Maya sneered, a vindictive smirk twisting her lips as the crowd went dead silent. She thrived on the audience, desperate to claw back the dominance she lost at the Plaza. "Is he coughing up blood in a penthouse while you spend his money? You traded a real man for a corpse just to spite me."

A familiar, protective heat flared in my chest. I thought of Malachi—the apex predator who could shatter a heavy bag with a single strike, the man who held my hand with reverent, calloused fingers. Maya was standing on the edge of a cliff, completely blind to the monster waiting in the dark below.
