Chapter 2

I stood in the marble foyer of the penthouse, watching the moving crew work with military efficiency. Boxes stacked on hand trucks. Wardrobe bags zipped shut. The sound of packing tape screaming across cardboard echoed through rooms that had never felt like home.

Diana stood beside me with a clipboard, checking items off a master list. Her heels clicked against the floor as she moved from room to room, directing traffic with the precision of a general commanding troops.

"His Tom Ford suits are going into storage unit seven," she said without looking up. "We'll release them after the legal proceedings conclude. His watch collection is being catalogued and photographed for asset documentation."

I nodded. My voice felt distant, like it belonged to someone else. "And her things?"

"Garbage bags," Diana replied flatly. "On the curb with the rest of the trash."

A crew member emerged from the bedroom carrying a silk robe the color of blood. Estella's. I recognized it from the morning I'd brought Caden coffee and found her draped across his sofa, laughing at something on her phone. She'd looked up at me with eyes that said she knew exactly what she was doing.

The robe disappeared into a black garbage bag.

"All security codes have been reset," Diana continued. "Locks changed. Elevator access revoked. The doorman has photos of both Mr. Bell and Ms. Munoz with instructions to deny entry and contact building security if either attempts to return."

"Good," I said.

A locksmith worked on the front door, installing a biometric scanner. The old keypad lay in pieces on the floor. I stepped over it and walked into the living room.

The space looked like a crime scene. Furniture sat at odd angles where movers had shifted it. Picture frames lay face-down on side tables. The cream sofa where Caden used to read the financial section on Sunday mornings sat empty, already looking like it belonged to a stranger.

On the bar cart near the window sat the crystal decanter.

I crossed the room slowly. My reflection moved in the glass—a woman in a black cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, her hair pulled back, her face blank. I picked up the decanter. Heavy. Expensive. Baccarat crystal, a gift from Caden's father on our engagement.

Caden had held it up at a dinner party six months ago, filled with thirty-year scotch, and announced to a table of his business associates: "This decanter is our symbol of love. Crystal clear. Unbreakable. Forever."

Everyone had laughed and raised their glasses.

I lifted the decanter above my head and threw it against the marble floor.

The sound was spectacular. Glass exploded across the room in a thousand glittering pieces, scattering like shrapnel. The smell of expensive scotch filled the air, sharp and bitter.

I stood perfectly still, watching the liquid seep into the grout between the marble tiles.

Ten seconds passed.

Then I stepped over the wreckage, walked to my study, and opened my laptop.

Diana appeared in the doorway. She glanced at the shattered crystal, then at me. She said nothing.

"Send the final documents to the bank," I said, my fingers already moving across the keyboard. "Every account. Every line of credit. Every supplementary card. I want them frozen by midnight."

"Already done," Diana replied. "As of eleven forty-three this evening, Caden Bell has zero access to any financial instrument connected to your assets."

I nodded. My chest felt hollow, like someone had scooped out everything inside and left only the architecture.

"Get some rest," Diana said quietly. "Tomorrow starts early."

She left. The apartment fell silent except for the distant sound of the crew loading the service elevator.

I stared at the screen, watching emails populate my inbox. Confirmations from banks. Legal filings. Asset freezes. Each one a small, precise incision.

By morning, Caden would understand exactly what he'd lost.

---

The call came at nine forty-seven a.m.

I was in my office at Montgomery Holdings, reviewing quarterly reports, when Diana walked in with her phone in her hand and a smile that could cut glass.

"The Ritz-Carlton just contacted our office," she said. "Apparently Mr. Bell is having some difficulty settling his account."

I set down my pen. "Is that so."

"His black card was declined. Then his platinum. Then his corporate Amex." Diana's smile widened. "The front desk manager is asking if there's been some mistake."

"No mistake," I said.

I imagined Caden standing at that polished marble counter, pulling card after card from his wallet while the concierge watched with professional sympathy. I imagined Estella beside him, her face shifting from confusion to calculation as she realized the man she'd chosen had nothing left to offer.

"They're asking him to settle the balance by other means or vacate the premises," Diana added.

"How much does he owe?"

"Forty-two thousand dollars. Suite, room service, spa services, minibar." Diana glanced at her phone. "Ms. Munoz ordered the truffle tasting menu three nights in a row."

I almost laughed. Almost.

"Let them handle it," I said. "I'm sure Mr. Bell will find a solution."

Diana nodded and turned to leave, then paused. "For what it's worth, Vivienne—you're doing the right thing."

I looked up at her. "I know."

After she left, I returned to my reports. Numbers and projections and profit margins. Clean. Rational. Controllable.

Somewhere across the city, Caden Bell was learning what it felt like to have nothing.

I felt nothing at all.
