Chapter 4

"Quinton."

I spoke his name softly. It wasn't a plea. It wasn't a cry for help. It was just a quiet, steady breath across the cold air between us, offering him one final chance to be the man he claimed to be.

Quinton’s jaw tightened.

His right hand drifted upward, fingers brushing against his jawline. It was his tell. He had done it the first week we met, and he did it every single time he prepared to tell a lie or save his own skin.

He looked at Duke. He looked at the gathered Ironcrest wolves, their faces hungry for cruelty. Then he looked at me, dripping with wolfsbane water in the center of the hall.

His shoulders squared, adopting a posture of borrowed authority.

"Omegas are built for pain, Florence," Quinton said, his voice ringing loud enough for the entire room to hear. "It’s what you do. It’s what you’re made for."

Laughter sputtered through the crowd. Juliette smirked, keeping her phone camera angled squarely on his face.

Quinton took half a step forward, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Duke gave you an order. Pick up the coal. Prove you have some spine, and stop making this difficult."

I didn't blink. "And if I don't?"

"Then I will formally reject you," he snapped, the words dropping like lead weights into the silence. "Right here. In front of the Alpha’s son, the guests, and everyone watching Juliette's stream. I will speak the vow and sever our bond tonight. You will be nothing, Florence. Packless and alone."

He folded his arms, his mouth curving into a satisfied, arrogant line. "The choice is yours. Don't embarrass me."

I stared at him.

The banquet hall seemed to fade into a blur of gold light and murmuring voices. All that remained was the man standing ten feet away. His scent—cedar and fresh rain—floated into my nose, mixing with the foul reek of wolfsbane. For three long years, that scent had made my inner wolf howl with devotion. I had bled for that scent. I had spent sleepless nights reworking Duskfall's logistics, secretly routing medicine to his sick elders, and hiding my royal blood so he could stand tall.

Now, looking into his gray eyes, the illusion shattered.

The scent hadn't changed, but the man had never possessed the soul to match it. He was small. He was vain. He was a coward who wrapped himself in ambition because he had nothing of real substance inside.

In the pocket of my soaked coat, my phone vibrated.

Just once. A short, sharp buzz against my hip.

I didn't reach for it right away.

Instead, I looked slowly around the room. I looked at the limestone hearth, where silver coals burned white-hot, waiting to melt wolf flesh. I looked at Juliette, whose manicured fingers adjusted her lens, gleeful at the spectacle. I looked at Duke, leaning against the mantelpiece with a sneer on his lips. And finally, I looked back at Quinton.

Inside my chest, something snapped—not with a violent tear, but with the quiet, effortless release of setting down a weight I had carried too long.

I had confused his dependency for love. I had convinced myself that because he needed what I gave, he valued who I was.

He didn't. He never had.

I slipped my hand into my coat pocket and pulled out the phone.

The screen glowed against the dim shadows of the hall. The red encrypted timer that had governed my life for three thousand days was gone. In its place, a gold crest—a roaring Lycan beneath a crescent moon—flashed across the glass.

*00:00:00.*

*The Trial is complete. The Lycan Crown is yours.*

A cold, absolute calm settled over my bones. The wolfsbane stinging my eyes faded into background noise. The burning nickel rash on my neck stopped aching.

I locked the screen and slid the phone back into my pocket.

Then, I met Quinton’s eyes again.

Whatever he expected to see—tears, panic, desperate apologies—it wasn't there. My face was completely still. My eyes were level, stripped clean of the quiet desperation he had spent three years feeding on.

"You're right, Quinton," I said.

My voice was barely above a whisper, yet it cut through the room with a strange, chilling clarity.

"We are done," I told him calmly. "And I won't embarrass you any further."

I turned my back on him.

I turned my back on the fire pit, on Duke, and on Juliette’s glowing screen. Slowly, deliberately, I began walking toward the grand double doors of the banquet hall.

My canvas shoes squeaked against the polished marble floor. Dirty wolfsbane water dripped from my hem, leaving a dark, jagged trail behind me. But my spine was straight, my chin high, and my hands rested loose at my sides.

The room watched in stunned silence. The wolves near the center parted instinctively, stepping back to avoid my path.

"Hey! Where do you think you're going, stray?" Duke's voice barked out, followed by a harsh, mocking laugh. "Look at the mutt run! Don't let the door hit you on the way out to the gutter!"

Laughter echoed from his friends, but it sounded hollow this time. Thin.

Quinton didn't join in.

He stood frozen in the center of the hall, staring at my retreating back. His arms dropped slowly to his sides. His jaw remained clenched, but the smug confidence in his face had vanished, replaced by an uneasy, creeping confusion.

He waited for me to turn around. He waited for me to break.

I didn't stop. I kept walking, straight toward the heavy oak doors, as the blood in my veins began to heat like liquid fire.
