Chapter 1

At 8:02 on a Tuesday morning, my knees hit the stone floor of the Great Hall.

The impact sent a dull shock straight up my spine, but I didn’t flinch. Above me stood Alpha Barrett Hoffman, my fated mate, dressed in a custom charcoal suit. At his right side stood Nina Gutierrez. Her fingers rested over the rounded curve of her belly beneath a cream silk dress, her scent—sweet almond and ripe pear—thick and suffocating over the sour tang of Barrett’s sweat. The mate mark on the right side of my neck throbbed ice-cold, deadened by the wolfsbane he had injected into my veins during our Marking Night three years ago.

"Look up, Cassandra," Barrett said.

I lifted my chin. My skin felt papery and tight, stretched thin over cheekbones that jutted like knives after six months in the underground cellar.

"The pack needs to know you’re well," Barrett murmured, his voice dipping low before swelling into the crushing, resonant weight of his Alpha tone. *"Thank me for your healing retreat. Welcome Nina to our table."*

The Alpha command slammed into my chest like iron bars, forcing the air from my lungs. Pain spiked through my temples, hot and blinding. I didn't cry. I didn't beg. My hand slid into my left sleeve, my fingertips pressing against the glass vial of concentrated wolfsbane I had palmed from the cellar before the guards dragged me up. The cold glass cut into my palm. A reminder: I was still awake.

"Thank you, Alpha, for my healing," I said. My voice was a flat, empty wire. "Welcome, Nina."

A murmur rippled through the pack ranks. Two Delta warriors exchanged uneasy glances, catching the sharp, chemical stench of the poison leaking from my scarred mark. Nina smiled down at me—a bright, triumphant show for the crowd—but in the second before she turned away, her jaw tightened. Her throat bobbed. For a heartbeat, the look in her eyes wasn't malice. It was sick terror.

"Take her to the west wing," Barrett ordered without looking at me again.

His Beta, Declan, gripped my bicep with fingers like steel vices and hauled me up. He didn't lead me toward the Luna suite on the third floor. Instead, he marched me down to the basement service wing, shoved me into a narrow storage room, and slammed the door.

There was no mirror. No rug. Just a metal cot with a scratchy wool blanket and a single, rectangular window coated in thick silver sealant to block the moonlight.

"Stay inside," Declan said through the reinforced wood. "For your own safety."

The heavy deadbolt turned.

I didn't knock. I didn't weep. I walked to the cot, sat down, and folded my hands in my lap. For the first time in three years, I had a locked door between Barrett and me without a guard in the room. I closed my eyes and began to sort the ledger in my mind: Barrett’s morning schedule, the patrol rotations, the shift changes, and the exact three-second delay on the perimeter security feeds. He thought he had broken a Luna. He didn't know he had locked an assassin into his foundation.

Two nights later, the pack hosted the Cross-Pack Thanksgiving Banquet.

Barrett forced me to attend in a high-collared black dress that hid my collarbones. I played the part. When Alpha Vance of the neighboring Pine Ridge Pack casually invited me to consult on his territory’s educational council—remembering who I was before Barrett locked me away—I lowered my eyes.

"My health is fragile, Alpha Vance," I said softly, feeling Barrett’s possessive glare burning into my back. "I must decline."

Barrett smiled then. He liked obedience.

He didn't stay pleased for long. The moment the last guest’s limousine cleared the gates, he dragged me into the dark service corridor behind the dining hall. His hand caught my collar, slamming my shoulders back against the drywall.

"You smiled at Vance," he hissed, his eyes flashing wolf-amber in the dark. "You looked him in the eye."

"I refused him, Barrett," I said evenly.

His palm cracked across my face.

The blow snapped my head sideways. My lower lip split against my teeth, the hot, metallic taste of blood flooding my tongue.

"Remember your place," he whispered against my bruised ear, then released me and strode away into the dark.

I stood there for three slow seconds, breathing through the throbbing heat in my cheek. Then, without a word, I reached up behind the wrought-iron wall sconce above my head. My fingers found the edge of the tiny surveillance crystal I had wedged into the plaster an hour before the banquet began. The crystal glowed faintly blue—it had recorded the strike, the dialogue, and his raw, unmistakable scent signature.

Proof. The first piece of Barrett’s trial.

Back in my bare room, I pressed two fingers against the corrupted mark on my neck.

Suddenly, deep in my chest, something moved.

It was a sharp, burning spark behind my ribs. A low, furious snarl echoed through my veins, rattling my bones with ancient, untamed fury. *Mine.* My inner wolf, deadened by three years of poison, strained against the chemical sludge in my blood.

Before she could break through, Barrett’s bond-link pulsed through the scar—a brutal psychic tug checking my submission. The ember was crushed back into darkness. But I felt it. She was in there. Alive.

I wiped the blood from my chin and stood up. There was one thing left to do tonight.

I slipped out through the service hatch into the kennels behind the garage. In the farthest corner, curled on a pile of straw, was Buster. The golden retriever scrambled to his feet, his tail thumping softly against the wire mesh as I unlatched the crate. He was the stray I’d pulled from the woods during my first month here, the only soul in this house Barrett had deemed too insignificant to hurt.

Joel, a quiet Omega who ran early-morning supply routes, was waiting by the open tailgate of an unmarked van. He took Buster’s leash without a word.

"Drive straight to the border," I whispered, handing him an envelope with Meredith’s address at the Iron Veil sanctuary. "Don't stop until he's safe."

Joel nodded and hoisted the crate into the truck bed.

The van engine rumbled to life, its red taillights cutting through the fog. But before the tires could roll ten feet down the driveway, the floodlights over the courtyard flashed violently on, blinding white.

The heavy steel kitchen door flew open, and Barrett stepped onto the porch, a silver leash dangling from his fist.
