Chapter 3

Gage appeared in the doorway before I reached the exit.

He looked at the wreckage. The flowers scattered across the marble. The twisted metal frame. The piano keys crushed under the weight.

Then he looked at me.

"What happened?" His voice was sharp. Concerned. He crossed the room toward Lorelai. "Are you okay?"

Lorelai nodded. Her hand was still pressed to her chest. "It just fell. I don't know how—"

"She pushed it," I said.

Gage turned. His face shifted. Concern to confusion to something harder. "What?"

"I saw her hand on the cable. I saw her step back. She pushed it."

Lorelai's eyes went wide. "That's insane. Stella, you're being paranoid."

Gage stepped between us. Not dramatically. Just... moved. Positioning himself. A reflex.

"Stella." His voice was careful. Reasonable. The voice of a man explaining something to someone who wasn't quite keeping up. "It was an accident. The coordinator said the rigging was unstable. You heard her."

I looked at him.

Really looked.

He believed it. Or he wanted to believe it. Or he'd decided what he needed the story to be and the truth didn't matter.

Same thing it had always been.

"Right," I said quietly.

I walked past him. Past Lorelai. Past the coordinator who was already on her phone with the venue manager.

I got in the car. I closed the door. I sat in the silence for a long moment.

Then I called Kingsley.

He answered on the first ring. "How did it go?"

"Lorelai was there."

Silence. Then: "And?"

I told him. The installation. The cable. The way she'd stepped back. The way Gage had positioned himself between us without thinking.

Kingsley didn't interrupt. He just listened.

When I finished, he was quiet for a moment.

"Good," he said finally. "Now we know what she's willing to do."

I leaned my head back against the seat. I closed my eyes. "Yeah."

"Are you all right?"

"I'm fine."

"Stella."

I opened my eyes. "I'm fine. Really."

Another pause. Then: "Come home."

I smiled. Just a little. "I'm on my way."

---

The texts started that night.

Gage: I know you're upset about today. But you have to see how that sounded.

Gage: Lorelai would never do something like that. You know her.

Gage: I think you're stressed. Wedding planning does that. Let me help.

I deleted them without reading past the first line.

The next day, there were voicemails.

I listened to the first one while I was getting coffee. Mistake.

"Stella. It's me. I just... I need you to understand something. What we had—it was real. I know I didn't handle things the right way. I know I hurt you. But I was young. I was stupid. I didn't understand what I had until it was gone. And now I see you with—" A pause. His voice tightened. "I just think you deserve better than whatever this is. Call me. Please."

I deleted it.

There were two more by evening. I didn't listen.

---

He was waiting outside my coffee shop three days later.

I saw him through the window before I walked out. He was leaning against the building. Hands in his pockets. Trying to look casual.

I pushed open the door.

He straightened. "Stella. Hey."

I kept walking.

He fell into step beside me. "Can we talk? Just for a minute."

I didn't answer.

"I've been thinking a lot. About us. About what happened." His voice was earnest. Practiced. "I know I screwed up. I know I didn't see what I had. But I see it now. And I think—I think what we had was real in ways I didn't understand at the time."

I stopped walking.

Gage stopped too. He turned to face me. His eyes searched mine. Hopeful. Vulnerable.

I looked at him.

I didn't speak. I just... looked.

Let the silence stretch. Let him stand there with his rehearsed speech half-finished. Let him wait for the reaction he'd been expecting.

Then I started walking again.

"Stella—"

I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard him stop. Heard the exact moment he realized I wasn't going to respond. Wasn't going to engage. Wasn't going to give him anything.

The sound of his breath was sharp. Frustrated.

I turned the corner and kept going.

---

Solomon Franklin's boutique was quiet when I walked in.

The bell above the door chimed softly. Solomon looked up from behind the counter. He smiled.

"Miss Moreno. Right on time."

He reached beneath the counter and brought out a small velvet box. He opened it carefully.

My father's watch.

I'd bought it back six months ago. Quietly. Through an intermediary. It had taken time to track down. The pawn shop had sold it. The buyer had sold it again. But I'd found it.

Solomon had cleaned it. Polished the crystal. Adjusted the band.

It looked exactly the way I remembered.

"Beautiful piece," Solomon said softly. "Your father had excellent taste."

I reached for it.

The bell chimed again.

I didn't need to turn around. I felt her before I saw her.

Lorelai Jensen walked in like she owned the place. She stopped when she saw me. Her eyes flicked to the watch on the counter.

She went very still.

"Stella." Her voice was light. Friendly. "What a surprise."

I said nothing.

She drifted closer. Her gaze locked on the watch. "Is that...?"

Solomon's hand moved. Protective. Covering the box.

Lorelai's smile sharpened. "I remember that watch. You used to wear it all the time. Before."

She knew.

She knew exactly what it was. Knew exactly what it had cost me to lose it.

Her hand shot out.

She grabbed the watch before Solomon could stop her.

"Lorelai—" I started.

She hurled it to the floor.

The sound was crystal shattering. Metal striking marble. Something irreplaceable breaking.

She lifted her heel.

And she ground it into the watch face.

Twisted. Deliberate.

Solomon gasped. "Miss Jensen—"

I didn't move.

I just watched.

Lorelai stepped back. Her chest was rising and falling. Her eyes were bright. Wild.

She looked at me.

Waiting for the reaction. The tears. The rage.

I bent down.

I picked up the pieces.

The crystal was shattered. The face was crushed. The band was twisted.

I held them in my palm.

Then I looked up at Lorelai.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream.

I just looked at her.

And I smiled.

Small. Cold. Final.

"Thank you," I said softly.

Lorelai blinked. "What?"

"Now everyone will know exactly who you are."

I turned to Solomon. "You have cameras in here. Don't you."

It wasn't a question.

Solomon nodded slowly. His face was pale. Shocked. "Yes. Miss Moreno. I do."

"Good," I said.

I walked out.

Behind me, Lorelai was still standing there. Frozen.

And Solomon Franklin—witness to everything—was already reaching for his phone.
