Chapter 2

"Five years, Ms. Hale. CrossTech is ten days from a total default." Felix slid the thick financial dossier across the mahogany table. "Sixty million dollars in the red. The banks froze their credit lines yesterday morning. Gideon retains only thirty-one percent of the voting rights. He is bleeding out."

I dragged my fingertips over the raised scar on my lower abdomen. The steady, rhythmic beep of a hospital heart monitor from half a decade ago still echoed in my ears, drowning out the memory of rain on my old foyer floor.

Through the cracked door to the adjoining suite, the faint scratch of a crayon against paper grounded me. Lily was drawing a yellow sun on construction paper. She survived. That was all that mattered now.

"Give him eighty million," I told Felix, uncapping my gold fountain pen. I slashed my signature across the final authorization line. "That secures forty-two percent of his company. I am now the majority shareholder."

Felix gathered the papers, tapping the edges against the glass to align them. "He expects a silent partner. A faceless entity to just write the checks."

"He gets what I give him," I said.

I stood and stepped behind the tall ebony folding screen positioned in the corner of the reception room. A small metal voice modulator rested on the hidden desk, connected to the room's surround sound system.

"Security scrubbed your identity from all public filings," Damian said from the doorway, his earpiece glowing a faint blue. "The lobby cameras are disabled. They only know Hale Meridian is backing them. They just stepped into the private elevator."

"Let them in," I said.

I slipped the cold metal modulator over my throat, securing the clasp at the back of my neck.

"We cannot thank you enough for this lifeline," Serena said, her voice piercing the quiet room before she even fully crossed the threshold. She stepped onto the Persian rug, clinging tightly to Gideon's arm.

She raised her left hand to brush a stray hair behind her ear, intentionally flashing a massive, square-cut diamond engagement ring under the crystal chandelier. She surveyed the room, taking in the art and the expensive furniture with a hungry gaze.

I peered through the narrow slats of the ebony screen. Gideon wore a charcoal suit, tailored, just like he always preferred. Silver glinted at his wrists when he moved his hands. He still wore the same engraved cufflinks I bought him for our third anniversary.

"Take a seat," Owen, my lead negotiator, instructed them from the head of the conference table. He pushed the newly signed contract toward Gideon. "Hale Meridian will inject the cash immediately. In exchange, we take three board seats. Every expenditure over fifty thousand dollars requires our direct approval."

Gideon scanned the top page, his jaw tightening. "You are stripping my operational control. This leaves me as a figurehead in my own company."

"Your research department burned through forty million in two years with zero patentable results," Owen replied, leaning back in his leather chair. "Hale Meridian is taking the wheel."

"My engineers need freedom," Gideon argued, his voice rising. "You cap my spending at fifty thousand, I cannot even buy server space without begging your board."

"Then do not sign," Owen said, gesturing toward the exit. "File for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday morning. The choice is yours."

Gideon gripped his pen, his knuckles turning white. He stared at the signature line. He knew no other firm would offer him a dime. The industry considered CrossTech dead weight.

"Ms. Hale's firm is incredibly generous," Serena chimed in, squeezing his bicep. She smiled at Owen. "She understands the vision, Gideon. We are so grateful for the opportunity to rebuild."

I pressed the microphone button on the hidden desk. The modulator warped my voice into a flat, metallic alto that echoed through the room's overhead speakers.

"Do you believe he would reject a bad deal for you, Serena?"

Serena jumped, her eyes darting toward the dark screen in the corner. She recovered quickly, offering a sweet, practiced smile to the empty wood panels.

"We don't need tests like that," Serena said, resting her chin near his shoulder, feigning a look of complete devotion. "Gideon and I trust each other completely. He always puts us first. Our bond is unbreakable."

"We will see," I said through the speakers. "There is one final stipulation before the remaining funds transfer to your accounts."

Gideon dropped the pen onto the table. It clattered against the polished wood. "Name it."

"One night," I said. "A private date with me. No lawyers. No assistants. And no fiancées."

Serena's smile vanished instantly. She dug her manicured nails into Gideon's sleeve. "Absolutely not. Tell her no, Gideon. This is inappropriate. We are leaving."

Gideon did not pull his arm away. He kept his eyes locked on the center of the screen, his expression unreadable.

"Where is the location?" Gideon asked, his voice steady and low. "How long is the duration? And does this alter the equity split in the current contract?"

Serena yanked her hands back as if the wool suit had suddenly caught fire.

"Are you actually negotiating this?" Serena's pitch spiked, echoing off the high ceilings. "She wants to buy you for a night, and you are asking about the schedule? Are you out of your mind?"

"Sixty million dollars in debt, Serena," Gideon shot back, finally turning to look at her. His tone held no warmth. "Do you want to go back to flying commercial and renting a two-bedroom apartment in the suburbs?"

"You are disgusting," she spat.

Serena spun around, her expensive shoes slapping hard against the hardwood floor. She yanked the heavy brass handles of the double doors, pulled them open, and slammed them shut behind her. The wood rattled in the frame.

Gideon did not flinch. He did not turn to watch her leave.

Five years ago, he stood in silence while she degraded me in my own foyer. Today, he let her walk out rather than lose his company. Power had not changed his fundamental nature; it only revealed what he valued above all else. Himself.

"What do you actually want from me?" Gideon asked, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "You have the board. You have the equity. You have my company by the throat. Why a date?"

"Consider it a test of investment viability," I said through the microphone. "I need to know the man I am handing eighty million dollars to."

Felix stepped forward and placed a matte-black hotel keycard on top of the contract. The gold foil numbers on the plastic read 1908.

"The penthouse at the Meridian," Felix said, stepping back into the shadows. "Nine o'clock tonight."

Gideon stared at the small piece of plastic. The silence in the reception room stretched, heavy and thick. His Adam's apple bobbed once against his collar.

He reached out and pressed his index finger flat against the keycard, sliding it off the contract and into his palm.

"Tell her," Gideon said, slipping the card into his breast pocket, "I will be there on time."

I reached up and slowly unclasped the metal modulator from my throat.
