Chapter 4

The morning run was supposed to be routine.

Grandfather had suggested it—a loop through Silvercrest's northern territory to clear my head. Harrison and Ethan were reviewing the Ford pack documents in the study. I'd left them there with tea and maps and gone to shift.

My wolf was weak. She emerged slowly, like something climbing out of deep water. White fur, smaller than she should have been, ribs visible under the coat. The rejection had done this. Five years of bond denial, then the vow, then the collapse. She was still here. Barely.

I ran the perimeter trail at an easy pace. The forest was quiet. Early spring, new growth, the scent of thawing earth. My wolf's breathing was labored after the first mile. I slowed.

Then I caught Declan's scent.

Dark pine and smoke. Close. Too close.

I stopped. My wolf's ears flattened. She turned toward the scent, hackles rising weakly.

Declan's wolf stepped out of the underbrush thirty feet ahead. Dark gray, broad-shouldered, eyes fixed on me. Behind him, two more wolves emerged—Ironveil patrol, flanking.

My wolf took a step back. Instinct. The bond was severed, but the habit of submission was still there, carved into five years of conditioning.

Then Laila appeared.

She came from the left, moving fast, her tawny wolf sleek and uninjured. She angled toward me, teeth bared, and I realized what this was.

A setup.

I shifted sideways, trying to avoid the collision. Laila adjusted her trajectory. She wasn't attacking—she was positioning. She wanted contact. She wanted witnesses.

I tried to dodge. My wolf was too slow.

Laila's shoulder hit mine. Not hard. Just enough. We both went down in a tangle of limbs. She yelped—loud, performative—and rolled away clutching her foreleg.

Declan's wolf lunged forward, snarling. The two patrol wolves closed in from the sides.

My wolf scrambled to her feet, chest heaving. I could feel her panic, thin and sharp. She couldn't fight. She could barely stand.

Then the air pressure dropped.

It happened fast. A massive shape erupted from the tree line—silver fur, enormous, moving with a speed that didn't match the size. Harrison's Lycan wolf crossed the clearing in three strides. He was a full meter taller at the shoulder than Declan. His aura hit like a physical force. My wolf dropped flat on instinct, and so did the patrol wolves.

Declan tried to hold his ground.

Harrison's forepaw came down on Declan's back and pinned him to the dirt.

Declan's wolf writhed. Snarled. Tried to twist free. Harrison didn't move. Just held him there, one enormous paw pressing Declan's shoulders into Silvercrest soil. The weight was deliberate. Controlled. Humiliating.

Ten seconds. Harrison held the pin for ten full seconds.

Every wolf present was watching. The patrol wolves. Laila, her fake injury forgotten. Me.

Then Harrison released him. One contemptuous shake of his paw, like flicking off dirt. He shifted back to human without looking at Declan again.

Declan's wolf staggered upright, shaking. Then he shifted too.

He was breathing hard. His face was flushed, jaw tight. He looked at Harrison, then at me.

"You did this," he said. His voice was rough. Shaking. "You brought him here to undermine my authority. Come home. Now."

The Alpha tone hit like a slap. It carried pressure—real pressure. I felt it in my chest, in my wolf's instinctive flinch. Several lower-ranked Silvercrest wolves nearby dropped their heads.

My hand went to my neck. The hollow mark-site. Cold. Empty.

I pressed my fingers there for two seconds. Felt the absence.

Then I dropped my hand.

I looked at Declan. At the male who had lied for five years. Who had shoved me to the ground and spoken the rejection vow in front of his warriors. Who had just tried to frame me for attacking his chosen mate.

"You have no authority over me," I said. My voice was level. Quiet. "You spoke the vow yourself."

I turned my back on him.

I shifted—slowly, painfully—and walked toward the Silvercrest gate. My wolf's legs were shaking. I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard Declan snarl something. Then Harrison's voice, low and cold: "Leave. Now."

Footsteps. Retreating. Then silence.

That night I went to the guest lodge alone.

Harrison was standing by the window when I knocked. He turned, saw me, and stepped back to let me in. He didn't ask why I'd come. Just waited.

I closed the door behind me and stayed near it. My hands were steady. My wolf was quiet.

"I want to propose an alliance," I said.

Harrison's expression didn't change. "Go on."

"A formal mating alliance," I said. "Strategic. Mutual. On my terms."

He watched me. Steady. Patient.

I kept going. "I bring five years of Ironveil and Ford pack intelligence. Silvercrest's border-patrol network. My grandfather's Lycan pact standing. My bloodline as Arthur Bradley's granddaughter." I paused. "And a firsthand account of bond manipulation that the Council will want documented."

Harrison stepped away from the window. He didn't come closer. Just shifted his weight slightly. "Is this what you want," he asked quietly, "or what you think you need?"

I met his eyes. Gray. Steady. No pity.

"Both," I said.

Silence. He studied me for a long moment. Then he inclined his head once.

"Then we are agreed," he said.

He didn't move toward me. Didn't reach out. Just stood there, waiting.

I realized he was giving me space. Letting me choose the next step.

I crossed the room. Stopped three feet from him. Close enough to catch his scent—cold pine, winter air. My wolf stirred weakly. Not anxious. Curious.

"When?" I asked.

"Whenever you're ready," Harrison said. "There's no rush."

I looked at him. At the male who had pinned an Alpha to the ground without breaking a sweat. Who had handed me a proposition without pressure. Who was standing here now, waiting for me to decide.

"Soon," I said.

Harrison nodded once. "Soon."

I turned and left. My wolf was quiet. Watchful.

But for the first time in five years, she wasn't afraid.
