Chapter 2

The Silvercrest gate looked the same as it had when I was a child. Iron scrollwork, the pack crest at the center, moss growing in the joints where no one had bothered to scrub it away. I stopped ten feet from it and realized I couldn't remember the last time I'd been here.

Five years. It had been five years.

My wolf stirred weakly inside me—barely a flicker, like something trying to breathe underwater. The bond-pain had faded to a dull, constant ache that lived in my ribs and wouldn't leave. Every few hours it spiked sharp enough to make me stop walking. I'd stopped twice on the road here.

The gate opened before I reached it.

Grandfather stood in the gap. He didn't smile. Didn't speak. He just looked at me—one long, steady look that took in the hollow at my throat where a mark should have been, the shadows under my eyes, the way I was holding my ribs on the left side.

Then he stepped forward and placed one hand on my shoulder.

The touch broke something. Not tears. I was past tears. Just a sharp, sudden exhale that I hadn't known I was holding.

"Inside," he said quietly.

I followed him through the gate. My feet knew the path. Past the training grounds, past the main hall, to the small stone house at the edge of the residential quarter where he'd lived since stepping down as Alpha. He guided me to the chair by the fire and disappeared into the kitchen.

I sat. The chair was old leather, cracked at the arms. I used to sit here as a child and listen to him tell stories about pack history. I pressed my fingers to my mark-site. It was cold. Hollow. Like pressing on a bruise that had gone numb.

Grandfather returned with tea. He set the cup in front of me and sat across the low table.

"How long do you need before we talk?" he asked.

I looked at the tea. Steam rose in a thin line. "We can talk now."

"Cameron—"

"Now," I said. "Please."

He studied me for a moment, then nodded. He reached into his coat and pulled out a folded piece of parchment. "I've invoked the Silvercrest-Lycan pact. Lycan Prince Harrison Fox will meet us here in two days."

I blinked. "Harrison Fox."

"You know him?"

"I've seen him. At the summits." Three years ago. A tall male with dark hair and a presence that made every Alpha in the room adjust their posture without realizing it. I remembered his scent—cold pine and something sharper, like winter air. I remembered the way he'd looked at me across the hall for exactly two seconds before turning away.

I hadn't thought about it since.

"He outranks Declan," Grandfather said. "In blood and in Council standing. If you want an alliance that can't be challenged, he's the one."

I wrapped my hands around the tea cup. The heat bit into my palms. "You think I need an alliance."

"I think you need protection," he said bluntly. "And I think Declan isn't done."

My wolf stirred again—a weak, anxious flutter. She knew he was right.

"What do you have on the Ford pack?" I asked.

Grandfather's expression shifted. Surprise, then something sharper. "How do you know about the Fords?"

I set the tea down and reached for my pack bag. I'd carried it across the bridge, through neutral territory, the whole way here. I pulled out the leather journal and placed it on the table between us.

He stared at it.

"Five years of border-patrol records," I said. "Ironveil and Ford pack movements. Overlapping patrol schedules. Supply routes that don't match the terrain. I started keeping track after the first year, when Declan told me his wolf rejected me because the bond wasn't complete." I opened the journal to a marked page. "This is the week of the rogue attack. The one where he took a silver blade for me."

Grandfather leaned forward. His eyes moved over the page—dates, times, coordinates. His jaw tightened.

"The Ford patrol was in position six hours before the attack," I said. "They didn't respond. They waited."

"You've been building a case," he said quietly.

I shook my head. "I was learning to survive. The case was a side effect."

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he picked up the journal, stood, and walked to his desk. He opened a drawer and pulled out a locked box. Inside were documents—territorial maps, old pack agreements, correspondence I couldn't read from across the room.

"Harrison arrives in two days," he said. "When he does, you'll show him this."

I pressed my fingers to my mark-site again. The cold hadn't faded. "Why would he care?"

Grandfather turned. His expression was the one I remembered from childhood—the Alpha look, the one that meant he was three steps ahead and you needed to catch up.

"Because," he said, "Harrison Fox has been tracking your scent for three years. And when he finds out what Declan did, he's going to care very much."

---

Two days later, I stood at the edge of Silvercrest's training grounds and watched a convoy of black vehicles pull through the gate.

The lead car stopped. The door opened. Harrison Fox stepped out.

He was taller than I remembered. Broader through the shoulders. He wore dark clothes, no pack insignia, and moved with the kind of economy that came from never needing to prove anything. His security detail fanned out behind him—four wolves, all Lycan-ranked, all silent.

Then he turned toward me.

He went still. Completely still. For exactly two seconds.

I watched his nostrils flare slightly. Scent recognition. My wolf stirred weakly, confused by the attention.

Grandfather stepped forward and greeted him formally. Harrison responded, his voice low and measured, but his eyes didn't leave me.

When Grandfather introduced me, Harrison inclined his head. "Miss Bradley."

"Prince Harrison," I said.

He stepped closer. Not crowding—just closing the distance enough to speak without the security detail overhearing. "Your grandfather mentioned border-patrol intelligence."

No pleasantry. No small talk. Straight to the point.

I met his eyes. They were pale gray, steady, and entirely without pity. "I have five years of it. Ironveil and Ford pack movements. Overlapping patrols. A staged rogue attack."

His expression didn't change, but something shifted in his posture. Attention sharpening. "Staged."

"Staged," I confirmed.

He glanced at Grandfather, then back at me. "I'd like to see it."

I pulled the journal from my bag and held it out.

Harrison took it carefully, like it was something breakable. He opened it to the first marked page and read in silence. His jaw tightened. When he looked up, his eyes were colder.

"How long have you been carrying this?"

"Five years," I said. "Give or take."

He closed the journal. "And no one knew."

"No one asked," I said quietly.

Harrison looked at me for a long moment. Then he handed the journal to the male beside him—Ethan Cole, his Future Beta—and turned back to me.

"We need to talk," he said. "Privately."

Grandfather nodded and gestured toward the main hall.

As we walked, I felt Harrison's presence at my side—steady, unhurried, and strangely careful. Like he was measuring the space between us.

My wolf stirred again. Not anxious this time.

Curious.
