My Ex Ignored My Calls While My Mother Died Novel Cover

My Ex Ignored My Calls While My Mother Died

Five years ago, Kellen Myers let his silence swallow her whole while her mother slipped away. Now, at The Meridian's concierge desk, a familiar electric prickle warns her before she even turns: he's back, Tiffany Ray draped on his arm like a price tag, his eyes full of cold, smug pity for the woman he thought he'd buried. He climbed higher, grew richer, colder—and utterly unprepared for who she's become.

Chapter 2

The lobby didn't just go quiet. It went still, the way a room goes still right before a glass hits the floor—everyone already flinching for a sound that hasn't happened yet.

A bellhop froze mid-step, a luggage cart balanced on one wheel. Two men in suits by the check-in desk, the kind of men who negotiate in numbers with too many zeros, turned their heads slowly, like they didn't want to be caught looking but couldn't help it. Somewhere behind me, the concierge stopped typing.

I watched it happen to Kellen in real time. I watched the math assemble itself behind his eyes—my wife, Damari had said, and then the way Damari's hand never left my back, easy and certain, like he'd been standing there his whole life. I watched Kellen do the arithmetic. This hotel. This lobby. This man. This woman he'd texted a week ago offering to let her pawn a forty-dollar bracelet.

His face went the color of old paper.

Tiffany recovered first, because Tiffany always recovers first. She laughed—a short, bright sound, engineered for an audience. "Oh, this is—" She reached for Kellen's arm, the way you'd reach for a chair to steady yourself. "This is clearly a misunderstanding, we didn't mean—"

Kellen took a step back.

Just one. But it was enough. It put six inches of marble floor between them, and everyone in that lobby saw it. Saw him let go of her hand to save himself, the same reflex, I realized, watching him do it again. He'd done this before. He'd stepped back from a phone call once, too.

Damari didn't raise his voice. He never does. That's the thing people don't understand about my husband until they're standing in the wreckage of underestimating him—he gets quieter as things get worse for you, not louder.

"Marcus."

A man I recognized—tall, gray at the temples, unbothered in the specific way of someone who has never once been surprised at work—stepped forward from near the elevator bank. He'd been there the whole time. Of course he had.

Damari reached into his jacket and drew out two sheets of paper, worn soft at the folds like they'd been handled many times in five years of nights. He didn't unfold them dramatically. He didn't need to.

"Hospital incident report," he said, holding the first page so the light caught it, angled just enough that I could see the letterhead, the timestamps, without being asked to read it myself. "Bennett Foundation emergency medical grant, approved eleven thirty-eight PM. Disbursement contingent on reaching the family's designated contact." He looked up. Not at me. At Kellen. "You were the contact, Mr. Myers. Paloma listed you herself. She trusted you enough to put your name on a hospital form."

I felt something crack open in my chest—not new pain, just old pain finding a door it hadn't used before. I hadn't known that. I hadn't known there'd been a grant. I hadn't known there'd been a form with his name on it, sitting in some file for five years, waiting for this exact lobby, this exact light.

"The contact was unreachable," Damari continued, and his voice dropped another register, so gentle it was obscene. "Elena Sullivan was pronounced dead at eleven forty-seven PM. Nine minutes after the money that would have saved her life was already approved and sitting in an account with nowhere to go."

He set the second page down—smaller, yellowed, torn at one corner like it had once been crumpled and then smoothed flat again. I didn't need to read the words to know what it was. I'd never seen it, but I felt Kellen see it, felt the sound go out of the room around him.

*I owe everything to the Sullivans. I will repay this debt with my life.*

A napkin. Written at a graveside my mother had paid for.

Damari reached into his pocket one last time and set something small and cheap and silver on the reception desk between them, right on the polished granite, under the chandelier light. It looked so ordinary there. So insulting in how ordinary it looked.

"Forty dollars," he said. "The price you put on a woman's life."

Kellen opened his mouth. I watched him try—watched the old machinery try to engage, the charm, the reframe, the smooth Columbia cadence that had talked his way into rooms he didn't grow up belonging in. But nothing came out except a fractured breath, half a syllable that died before it became a word.

Tiffany's mind was already somewhere else, I could see it—already calculating exits, doors, the fastest route out of a room that was about to become a headline. "This is—we can discuss this privately, surely there's no need to—"

But Marcus Webb had already stepped forward, unhurried, and photographed the napkin with his phone. A soft click. Final as a door locking.

No one argued with a click like that.

Kellen's mouth closed. He looked around the lobby—at the frozen bellhop, the watching investors, the concierge who would tell this story for years—searching, I realized, for someone, anyone, who still believed him.

There was no one. Not even Tiffany, who had already released his arm and was staring at the bracelet like it was something contagious.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm, once, and found I didn't need it. For the first time in five years, my hands were perfectly steady.
