My Ex-Husband Put My Cowboy on Payroll Novel Cover

My Ex-Husband Put My Cowboy on Payroll

I spent fourteen months turning Juniper Ridge Ranch into a genuine enterprise—not the little hobby billionaire hotel heir Julian Cross always dismissed. Then my ex-husband bought out my lender, claimed the title of biggest investor, hired horse trainer Beck Mercer onto his payroll, and installed himself under my roof. Beck actually hears me when I discuss business. Julian memorized my habits but never understood my dreams. When a filing defect jeopardizes our divorce, Julian announces to the cameras that I remain his wife. Beck refuses to be anyone's secret, forcing the question: wait for my freedom, or seize it now?

Chapter 5

"You signed the capital transfer knowing the service acknowledgment was unsigned," I said, keeping my voice dead level.

Julian didn't look away from the glowing phone screen on his desk. "The investment decision was finalized two weeks before my legal team flagged the county records. I didn't buy a ranch to trap a wife, Vivian."

"But you kept the discrepancy a secret."

"I delayed the notification," he corrected, leaning back in his leather chair. "I thought a shared legal hurdle might force us to actually talk about why the marriage fractured. You walked out fourteen months ago and never gave me a post-mortem."

I stared at his calm posture. I didn't yell. The anger in my chest crystallized into something cold and sharp. A strange, hollow laugh escaped my throat, devoid of humor.

"Years ago, you slid a blank check across a table to shut down my ideas," I told him, stepping closer to the mahogany wood. "Now you use a missing court document to force me to speak. The currency changed, but the game is exactly the same. You just want to dictate when I have to face you."

Julian's fingers stopped tapping the armrest. He didn't offer a corporate pivot. He didn't try to soften the blow.

"Yes," he said softly. "I thought if the result was right, it would prove the method was worth it."

I turned and walked out of the study. There was no point in arguing with a man who viewed manipulation as a valid business strategy.

By ten the next morning, Julian's method had triggered a financial avalanche.

"This is a standard Cross Meridian board protocol," Lydia's voice crackled through the speakerphone in the operations office. "Any opening expenditures exceeding the daily threshold require secondary committee approval. Julian cannot override a board-mandated risk freeze."

Tessa stood by the filing cabinet, gripping a stack of unpaid invoices. Her knuckles were white.

"The guest tack shipment is held up at the freight depot," Tessa reported, ignoring the phone. "The finishing contractors for the west wing walk off the job at noon if we don't wire the final thirty percent. I have to reschedule every incoming supply truck."

Julian stood by the window, watching a stable hand lead a roan gelding across the yard. "I can wire the contractor balance from my personal account. It bypasses the board entirely."

"No," I told him, hitting the button to cut the speakerphone feed.

Julian turned around. "Vivian, be practical."

"I am. Cancel the floral installations for the lobby," I told Tessa, keeping my eyes on my floor manager. "Downgrade the gala dinner menu. Cut the string quartet. I am not substituting corporate debt for a personal favor from my ex-husband."

Tessa gave a tight nod and hurried out of the office.

Beck walked in a moment later. He sidestepped Tessa in the doorway and approached my desk. He picked up the revised cash flow sheet I had just printed.

"You're fifty thousand short for the week," Beck noted, his eyes scanning the red columns. He dropped the paper on the wood. "Defer my contractor fees. Keep the safety budget, but push my personal payout to next quarter."

"Absolutely not," I said, meeting his gaze.

Beck's jaw set. "I don't need the cash today. The ranch does."

"Respecting me means allowing me to bear the cost of my own choices," I told him, my voice rising just enough to fill the small room. "I chose to reject Julian's money. I pay the price for that. Not you."

Beck studied my face for a long three seconds. He didn't argue. He reached into his denim pocket and pulled out the silver Cross Meridian name badge.

He pinned the metal square directly over his heart. The corporate logo caught the morning light, sharp and glaring.

"If taking his salary saves your operating cash, I wear it," Beck said, his voice rough. "But every field order I execute still comes from you."

He walked out. The badge gleamed on his chest, but the gesture didn't feel like a victory. It felt like a heavy chain pulling all three of us tighter together. Julian paid the bills, Beck executed the work, and I had to constantly prove I wasn't just a pawn being passed between two different forms of protection.

The charity gala loomed over the schedule like a storm cloud. It was our only guaranteed access to the high-end client list we desperately needed for the winter season. Canceling it would destroy the remaining cash flow.

I found Beck by the south pasture fence just before sunset.

"I am attending the hospital gala tomorrow night," I said, resting my arms on the top rail.

He stopped checking the latch on the gate. "Understood."

"I need you there," I added. "As the official security director. I am not hiding you, and I am not hiding my staff structure from the press."

He gave a single, sharp nod. "I'll wear a suit."

The night before the gala, the main lodge felt too quiet. I carried a stack of seating charts down the stairs, planning to leave them on the reception desk.

Julian stood by the unlit stone fireplace.

"Are you prepared to explain our legal status to the reporters tomorrow?" Julian asked.

He pulled his silk tie loose, pulling the fabric from his collar.

"I will state the facts," I replied, pausing at the base of the stairs. "My lawyer is correcting a clerical error. We have been separated and living separate lives for fourteen months."

Julian draped the tie over the back of a leather chair. "The media does not write complex facts nicely. They prefer a scandal."

"Then it is not your place to write it for me," I shot back, gripping the wooden banister.

Silence stretched across the room. The grandfather clock in the hallway ticked off three heavy seconds. Julian looked at the stone hearth, then brought his dark eyes up to meet mine.

"If someone puts a microphone in my face, I won't lie," Julian said, his tone stripped of all corporate polish.

I turned away, ready to walk back up the stairs and lock my door.

"But I also won't omit the fact that I still want you back," he added.
