Chapter 3

Mrs. Nguyen never asked questions. That was the first thing I learned about her, and maybe the most important. She watched Nyra every evening without needing to know where I went or why I came home with bruises I couldn't explain. She just opened her door at seven-thirty each night, took my daughter's small hand in her weathered one, and said, 'Go. We'll be fine.'

Tonight, she'd made congee. I could smell it from the hallway—ginger and chicken stock, the kind that takes hours to cook down properly. Through her open door, I saw Nyra at the kitchen table, a soft-boiled egg cut into careful pieces on her plate. Her lips were blue at the edges. They were always blue now.

'Mommy!' She tried to stand, but Mrs. Nguyen's hand on her shoulder kept her seated.

'Finish eating first,' Mrs. Nguyen said gently. 'Your mother will be here when you're done.'

I knelt beside Nyra's chair and kissed her forehead. Her skin was cool and damp. 'I have to go to work, baby. But I'll be home before you wake up. I promise.'

'You always promise,' Nyra said, not as accusation but as fact. She picked up a piece of egg with her fingers. 'Mrs. Nguyen says I can draw you another picture.'

'I'd like that.' I smoothed her hair. 'Draw me something happy.'

Mrs. Nguyen walked me to the door. In the hallway, her voice dropped. 'You came home last night with blood on your knees.'

I looked down. I'd thought I'd washed it all off.

'I'm fine,' I said.

'That's not what I asked.' Mrs. Nguyen studied my face with the precision of someone who'd survived her own wars. 'But I'm not going to ask. Just—' She pressed a container into my hands. More congee. 'Eat something. You're no good to that child if you collapse.'

I took the subway to the Meatpacking District. GILT occupied the ground floor of a converted warehouse, all exposed brick and Edison bulbs and velvet ropes that separated people who belonged from people who served. I changed into my uniform in the staff bathroom—black dress, black heels, the smile I'd been told to bring.

The floor manager, Desiree, handed me a tray. 'VIP section tonight. Big spenders. Keep the bottles coming and the glasses full. They tip well if you're fast and you don't talk unless they talk to you first.'

I nodded. I was good at not talking.

The VIP section was already full when I arrived—men in suits that cost more than my yearly rent, women in dresses that whispered when they moved. I kept my head down and my hands steady as I poured champagne into crystal flutes.

Then I heard her laugh.

I looked up before I could stop myself. Kehlani sat at the center table, draped across a leather banquette like she owned it. She probably did. And beside her, close enough that their shoulders touched, was Rafael.

He saw me at the exact same moment I saw him. Something flickered across his face—recognition, maybe, or something else I didn't have the luxury of interpreting. Then it was gone, replaced by that same cold mask I'd seen outside the office building.

Kehlani's eyes followed his gaze and landed on me. Her smile sharpened.

'Well.' She crooked one finger. 'Come here.'

I walked to their table. My hands didn't shake. I'd learned that trick in prison—how to keep your body still even when everything inside you was breaking.

'You're the new girl,' Kehlani said. It wasn't a question. 'What's your name?'

'Sara.' I kept my voice neutral.

'Sara.' She repeated it like she was tasting something bitter. 'How nice. Sara, pour me a drink. No—pour yourself a drink. Let's toast to old friends.'

She pushed a bottle of something clear and expensive across the table. The label was in Russian. The alcohol content was printed in small numbers: 75%.

'I'm working,' I said quietly.

'I'm a customer.' Kehlani's smile didn't waver. 'And the customer is always right. Isn't that what they teach you?'

I looked at Rafael. He was watching me with an intensity that felt like pressure against my skin. His jaw was tight. He said nothing.

I poured the liquor into a shot glass. It smelled like gasoline. I lifted it to my lips and swallowed it in one motion. It burned all the way down, a line of fire from my throat to my stomach.

'Another,' Kehlani said.

I poured another. Drank it. The room tilted slightly.

'Good girl.' Kehlani stood. She was taller than me in her heels. 'Now get on the floor.'

The arithmetic was instant. If I refused, I'd be fired. If I was fired, the $15,000 gap would become impossible. Nyra's surgery slot would disappear. March would be too late.

I knelt.

The marble was cold through my stockings. Around me, conversations dimmed. Phones came out. I heard the soft click of camera shutters.

Kehlani lifted one foot. Her Louboutin heel was red on the bottom, the signature color. 'Lick it.'

I stared at the shoe. At the floor. At anything but Rafael's face.

Then I leaned forward and pressed my tongue to the sole of her shoe. The taste was leather and humiliation and the specific knowledge that I would survive this because I had survived worse.

When I finally stood, Kehlani was already bored. She turned back to Rafael, laughing about something I didn't hear.

That's when she saw it.

The jade bracelet on my wrist. The one Rafael had promised me for my twenty-third birthday, the one that had somehow ended up on Kehlani's wrist first, the one I'd quietly taken back from a box of her discarded things. I wore it not because I loved him anymore but because I needed proof that I had existed, that I had once been someone worth promising things to.

Kehlani's hand shot out. Her fingers closed around my wrist, nails digging in. 'Where did you get this?'

'It's mine,' I said.

'It's mine.' She yanked it off. The clasp tore skin. Blood welled up in a thin line. Kehlani held the bracelet up to the light, turning it so the jade caught the glow of the Edison bulbs. 'This was a gift. From someone important.'

She looked at Rafael. He was staring at the bracelet like he'd seen a ghost.

Then Kehlani smiled and threw it at the floor.

The jade shattered. Green fragments scattered across the marble like stars.

I stared at the pieces. Something inside me—something I hadn't even known was still intact—broke along with them. It made no sound. It left no blood. It was just suddenly, completely gone.

Kehlani brushed her hands together. 'Cheap knockoff anyway.'

I bent down and picked up the largest piece. It was sharp enough to cut. I closed my fist around it and felt nothing.

When I looked up, Rafael was still staring at me. His face was unreadable. His hands were flat on the table like he was holding himself down.

I walked away. I finished my shift. I collected my tips—$340, more than I'd ever made in one night—and took the subway home.

Mrs. Nguyen opened her door before I could knock. Nyra was asleep on her couch, a crayon drawing clutched in one small fist. I lifted my daughter carefully. She didn't wake.

'You're bleeding,' Mrs. Nguyen said, looking at my wrist.

I looked down. I'd forgotten about it.

She cleaned the cut with antiseptic that stung. She bandaged it with gauze and medical tape. She handed me the drawing—two stick figures holding hands in front of a lopsided house.

I held it against my chest and carried my daughter home.
