Chapter 1

Framed for stealing design drafts and with my license revoked, I scraped by in a sleepy seaside town in Oregon.

Then I saw my ex-boyfriend, Caleb, again.

Dressed in an exquisite custom-tailored suit, he was now a New York real estate magnate, a man who could reshape skylines, with a future as limitless as his ambition.

My friend beside me lowered her voice.

"Chloe, Caleb must still have feelings for you! He's still single!"

I sneered.

Feelings for me?

Ten years ago, he was the one who personally forged an email, sold my unpublished green city design to a competitor, and then leaked faked intimate photos to the media, branding me a whore who’d sold her body and soul for a shortcut to the top.

"Chloe, look, it's Caleb!"

My friend Olivia excitedly tugged my sleeve, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

I glanced up, following her gaze.

In the spotlight at the head table, he was no longer the fresh-faced college student from ten years ago. His features were now carved with a calculating calm.

He was a glittering figure under the crystal chandelier.

Olivia was still chattering in my ear.

"Caleb's so young, successful, and devastatingly handsome."

"I heard he's been single this whole time. He must be waiting for you!"

A humorless smile tugged at my lips. I said nothing.

Waiting for me?

He was the one who had personally shoved me into hell.

When the banquet ended, the crowd surged toward Caleb.

I turned, trying to blend in with the departing waitstaff and slip out unnoticed.

"Chloe."

A voice sliced through the noise, rooting me to the spot.

My back went rigid. I slowly turned.

Caleb was striding toward me, the crowd parting for him like the sea.

The gazes of everyone around us instantly converged on me—probing, curious, jealous.

He stopped in front of me, his eyes lingering for a second on the simple little black dress I wore, the only respectable dress I owned.

His sharp eyes held a storm of unreadable emotions.

Finally, his expression settled, and he offered a simple greeting.

"Long time no see."

"Caleb."

I lowered my eyes, my voice flat.

His thin lips parted, as if he wanted to say something more.

A woman's lilting voice cut in.

"Caleb, so this is where you are."

A girl in a white gown looped her arm through Caleb's as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

She looked at me, her face a perfect mask of surprise and concern.

"You must be Chloe, right?"

"Caleb mentions you so often. He says he owes you an apology."

The girl's name was Sierra, Caleb's current fiancée and a senator's daughter.

I watched her hand on Caleb's arm, how it rested perfectly against the expensive sapphire cufflink on his sleeve. The sight stung my eyes.

Caleb didn't pull his arm away, only furrowed his brow slightly.

"Don't be ridiculous."

But Sierra just pouted, her voice pitched just loud enough for everyone nearby to hear.

"How is it ridiculous? You still have that picture of you two from college in your study."

"You said you'd never forget her, not in your whole life."

A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers.

Everyone looked between the three of us, their expressions a mixture of gossip and understanding. It was clear they thought, *So that's the story*.

Caleb pulled a business card from his suit pocket and held it out to me.

"Call me if you need anything."

His tone was a command, leaving no room for refusal.

I stared at the heavy, textured card, my stomach twisting into a knot.

Ten years ago, on that afternoon, he had used the same calm, cruel tone to deliver my sentence over the phone.

"The professional association has made its decision. Your license has been revoked."

"Chloe, you're finished."

Overnight, Chloe, the star architect from Columbia University, became an industry pariah, a cautionary tale.

My reputation was in ruins, and I was permanently exiled from the New York architecture scene.

I took the card, my nails digging into the thick cardstock, leaving deep crescents.

"Thank you, Caleb."

I lifted my head and offered him a polite, brittle smile.

"But I don't imagine I'll have any reason to call."

With that, I turned and walked away without a single backward glance.
