Chapter 1

The cemetery was quiet the way only Tuesday mornings could be. No funerals scheduled. No crowds. Just the low hum of distant traffic and the rustle of wind through the cypress trees lining the perimeter.

I parked near the east gate and lifted Alaia out of her car seat. She clutched the bundle of white chrysanthemums I'd bought from the florist on Pine Street, holding them against her chest like a treasure.

"We're visiting Grandpa James?" she asked.

"That's right, baby."

She nodded solemnly. She'd never met him. Never would. But she knew the routine by now. We came once a month. We brought flowers. We talked to the stone.

The memorial was simple. Smooth granite. His name. The dates. Nothing elaborate. I knelt in the grass and Alaia crouched beside me, setting the chrysanthemums down with both hands.

"Hi, Grandpa James," she whispered.

I touched the stone. The surface was cool under my palm. "Hi, Dad."

Alaia patted the granite gently, the way she'd pat a sleeping dog. I smiled. She was so careful with things she thought were fragile.

I told him about the new painting I'd finished last week. About Alaia's preschool recital. About Raphael's latest project—a library renovation downtown that he was unreasonably excited about. Small things. Ordinary things. The kind of life I never thought I'd get to have.

Alaia leaned against my shoulder. "Mommy, is Grandpa James happy we came?"

"I think so, sweetheart."

"Good." She kissed her fingertips and pressed them to the stone. "Bye, Grandpa."

I stood, brushing grass off my knees. Alaia slipped her hand into mine. We turned toward the path.

That's when I saw him.

Thirty feet away. Standing beside a plot I didn't recognize. Dark coat. Same build. Same face I'd spent five years not thinking about.

Soren Daniels.

He turned. Our eyes met.

The color drained from his face like someone had opened a tap. He went absolutely still. His mouth opened. No sound came out at first.

Then: "Shiloh—"

I felt Alaia's hand tighten in mine. I didn't let him finish.

"I think you have me confused with someone else."

My voice came out level. Calm. The way I'd say it to a stranger who'd bumped into me at the grocery store.

He took a step forward. "No. No, it's—"

"I don't know you."

I bent and lifted Alaia onto my hip. She wrapped her arms around my neck and stared at him over my shoulder. Her eyes were narrow. Suspicious.

"You make Mommy's face go cold," she said.

I turned and walked toward the car. I didn't look back. My heart was beating steady and slow. My hands were not shaking. There was nothing in my chest but the faint, distant echo of something I'd already finished grieving.

Behind me, I heard a woman's voice. Sharp. Urgent.

"Soren, what the hell—"

Camille.

I didn't turn. I buckled Alaia into her seat, slid behind the wheel, and drove away.

In the rearview mirror, I saw them both standing there. Soren looked like he'd been hit by a car. Camille was staring after me with an expression I recognized from a long time ago.

Fear.

Good.

---

That evening, I came home to the smell of garlic and butter. Raphael was at the stove, stirring something in a pan. Alaia sat on the counter beside him, swinging her legs and narrating his every move.

"Now Daddy's putting in the spinach," she announced. "It's green. I don't like green things but Daddy says I have to try one bite."

"That's the rule," Raphael said mildly.

"One bite is a very small rule," Alaia said. "I think zero bites is better."

I stood in the doorway and watched them. The kitchen was warm. The light over the table was soft and golden. Alaia's laugh was bright and easy.

This was my life.

Raphael looked up and saw me. His smile was immediate. Unhurried.

"Hey," he said. "How was the cemetery?"

"Quiet," I said.

I crossed the room and leaned into him. He wrapped one arm around me, still holding the wooden spoon in the other hand. He smelled like soap and garlic and home.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

I nodded against his shoulder. "Yeah."

I didn't tell him about Soren. There was nothing to tell. A ghost had shown up at a graveyard. That was all.

Alaia reached over and patted my head. "Mommy, do you want to try one bite of spinach too?"

I pulled back and looked at her. "One bite?"

"One bite," she said seriously. "It's the rule."

Raphael grinned. I kissed Alaia's forehead.

"Deal," I said.

We sat down to dinner. The three of us. The warm light. The easy conversation. The ordinary, precious peace I had fought for and earned and would protect with everything I had.

The ghosts could stay where I left them.
