Chapter 2

My phone lit up at seven in the morning.

I was at my desk. Coffee cold beside me. Presentation notes spread across three monitors.

Colter's name on the screen.

I stared at it. Let it ring twice. Three times.

Then I answered.

His face filled the screen—gaunt, skeletal, eyes too bright. Behind him, nothing but white. Snow and sky blurred together. Wind screamed so loud I could barely hear him at first.

"Valentina." He was breathing hard. Shallow. "Look at me."

I looked.

"This is where she was," he said. "Right here. Aspen. We came here once. She loved it. She—" His voice cracked. "You took that from me. You took everything."

I said nothing.

"Say something!" He lurched closer to the camera. His coat hung off his shoulders like it was three sizes too big. "Defend yourself. Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me you didn't spend sixteen years making sure I could never find her."

The wind howled. Somewhere behind him, a tree branch snapped.

"You're a parasite," he said. Spit flecked his lips. "You latched onto me when I had nothing. You made yourself necessary. You trapped me in a loveless cage while she was out there waiting and you—" He stopped. Gasped for air. "You are the reason my life was wasted."

I watched his face. The way his cheekbones pressed against his skin. The tremor in his jaw.

I felt nothing.

No heat. No tears. No rage.

Just that cold, clear thing in my chest. Spreading.

"Are you done?" I asked quietly.

His eyes went wide. "What?"

"Are you done."

He stared at me. Mouth open. Like I'd slapped him.

I hung up.

Set the phone face-down on my desk.

My hand was steady.

I opened the call log. Saved the video to a secure folder on my laptop. Labeled it with the date. Backed it up to three separate drives.

I didn't know what I'd use it for.

I just knew I was done absorbing his venom in silence.

Marcus Webb called at two.

My attorney. Fifteen years of steady competence and zero drama. If Marcus was calling instead of emailing, it mattered.

"Valentina." His voice was careful. "I need you to come to the office. There's a document I need you to see."

"Send it over."

"I'd rather do this in person."

I closed my laptop. "That bad?"

A pause. "Just come in."

Marcus's office smelled like leather and old paper. He had the kind of desk that looked like it had witnessed fifty years of bad marriages ending.

He slid a folder across to me. Didn't say anything. Just watched.

I opened it.

*Petition for Voluntary Severance of Parental Rights.*

*Petitioner: Colter James Bennett.*

*Respondent: Valentina Marie Spencer.*

*Minor Child: Hayes Colter Bennett, age 16.*

I read the first page. Then the second.

Grounds: *Emotional abandonment. Failure to provide adequate maternal care. Documented pattern of prioritizing career over family welfare.*

All lies.

Neat, specific, documented lies.

There were dates. Incidents. A whole narrative of a mother who was never there. Who chose boardrooms over bedtime. Who left her son to raise himself while she built an empire on his father's back.

None of it was true.

All of it was notarized.

I set the papers down. Very carefully. Like they might explode.

"It's not signed yet," Marcus said. "But it's prepared. He could file any time."

I stared at the wall behind Marcus's head. Counted the law books on the shelf. Fourteen. Fifteen. Sixteen.

"Valentina?"

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Felt the bone.

"He's going to make Hayes sign it," I said. My voice sounded far away. "That's what this is. He's going to tell Hayes I'm the villain. Show him this. Make him believe it. And then Hayes will sign."

Marcus's face was grim. "It's possible."

"It's certain."

I sat there. In the leather chair. In the office that smelled like fifty years of endings.

Something in my chest cracked. Not broke. Cracked. Like ice shifting.

"Prepare a divorce filing," I said.

Marcus blinked. "Valentina—"

"Comprehensive. I want everything documented. Sixteen years of financial contribution. Every strategy I wrote. Every investor I brought in. Every dollar I'm owed." I looked at him. "And I want a counter-petition. If he's severing parental rights, I want it permanent. Legal. Irrevocable. No takebacks when he changes his mind."

"You don't mean that."

"I mean every word."

Marcus stared at me. "He's dying."

"I know."

"People will say—"

"I don't care what people say." My voice was steady. Cold. Clear. "He wants to take my son from me? Fine. But he doesn't get to take him halfway. He doesn't get to come back later and play the victim. If Hayes signs that paper, it's done. Forever."

Marcus was quiet for a long moment.

Then he nodded. Pulled out a legal pad. Started writing.

I sat there and watched him write. Watched the ink move across the page. Watched the end of my marriage take shape in black and white.

I didn't cry.

I went home at six. Made tea. Let it go cold.

Sat by the window and waited for the world to catch up to the decision I'd already made.
