Chapter 1

The contraction hit as the automatic doors slid open.

I grabbed the wall and held on. My suitcase tipped against my leg. Thirty-nine weeks pregnant, eleven at night, and the whole lobby of St. Catherine's Women's Hospital tilted like a boat.

*Breathe. Four in, six out.*

My head pounded. My blood pressure had been climbing for two weeks, and now the nausea sat high in my throat. But I had a plan. I'd paid twelve thousand dollars, three months early, for that plan. My year-end bonus. Most of my savings from before the wedding. A private labor suite, a recovery suite, and optional private-duty support. It was a comfort package, separate from the medical care my insurance covered. The hospital had confirmed availability that afternoon.

All I wanted was for my daughter to arrive safe.

I made it to the front desk. "Madeline Foster. I'm booked in the Premier Birth Suite."

The nurse typed. She stopped. She typed again.

"Mrs. Foster, the system shows you gave up the suite."

"I'm sorry?"

"Voluntary release. You've been moved to a temporary bed in the obstetric observation area." She turned the monitor toward me. "Right here."

I squinted at the screen. "I never asked for that."

"A release request was entered under your husband’s account." She tapped a line. "Dr. Nathaniel Brooks. This afternoon at four-fifteen. It says you authorized him to make the change. I’m calling the charge nurse to verify that."

My husband. An OB-GYN on staff here. Three years married, and I'd trusted his judgment on everything. Every scan, every lab result, every time he said, *Don't worry, Maddie, I know what I'm doing.*

The nurse took my blood pressure, called obstetric triage, and asked me to sit in the assessment bay just beyond the desk. Another contraction rolled through me. I bent over the counter and dialed him.

He answered on the fifth ring. "What?"

"Nate. I'm at the hospital. They say I don't have a room."

A sigh. Long and tired, like I was a patient who'd called after hours. "Harper just had laparoscopic surgery. She’s scared to share a room with strangers. The women’s surgical floor is using the overflow wing. I told admissions you agreed to release the suite. You’re only in early labor. Make do for one night."

Harper Ellis. The girl next door he'd looked after since they were kids. The girl who'd been at our engagement dinner, our first anniversary, my baby shower, sitting in the front row of our marriage like she had a ticket.

"So you gave her the room I paid for?"

"I'm a doctor. I know who needs more care." His voice went flat. "Don't let jealousy hurt the baby."

I stared at the dark phone after he hung up.

"Ma'am?" The nurse hesitated. "Your bags were already moved out of the suite. An orderly brought them down."

She pointed. My labor bag sat on a plastic chair by the elevators. The zipper was half open. Someone had gone through it.

---

Nathaniel showed up ten minutes later in his white coat. Behind him walked Derek Brooks, his cousin, in a navy security uniform with a radio on his shoulder.

Derek planted himself between me and the desk. "Seriously, Madeline? You're about to give birth and you're making a scene for your husband at work?"

"I'm asking where my room went."

"Your room." He snorted. "Nate's on shift. He doesn't have time for this."

"Then he shouldn't have signed my name away."

Nathaniel rubbed his eyes. "It's one night."

"It's my *delivery*."

The elevator chimed.

A wheelchair rolled out. Harper sat in it, pale and pretty, hospital blanket over her knees. And around her shoulders hung a cream cashmere cardigan.

Mine. The one I'd bought to wear after the birth. The one I'd folded into the top of my labor bag with tissue paper.

Her eyes were already red. "Maddie, I'm so sorry. I didn't know you'd mind this much." Her lip trembled. "If you're really upset, I'll go back to the regular ward. I'll be fine. I'll just—"

"Don't move." Nathaniel crouched in front of her, fast. He tugged the cardigan's collar straight, smoothed it flat against her neck. "You'll pull your stitches."

His hands. The same hands that used to rest on my belly every night, waiting for her to kick.

He stood up and turned to me. All the softness drained off his face.

"Stop bullying a patient, Madeline."

I laughed.

It came out of me before I could stop it, short and strange. Derek frowned. Harper blinked.

The pain in my stomach was nothing. A cold was spreading out from somewhere under my ribs, and it was worse.

I didn't argue. I scrolled to a number I'd saved months ago, just in case, and pressed call.

"Westbridge Maternity Center, labor and delivery."

"Hi. My name is Madeline Foster. I'm thirty-nine weeks, contractions every six minutes, history of gestational hypertension. I need your on-call doctor to evaluate me for transfer tonight."

Nathaniel's head snapped toward me. "What are you doing?"

"Hold, please," said the voice.

"Hang up." He reached for the phone. I stepped back. "You can’t just switch hospitals while you’re in labor. What if something happens on the road?"

I met his eyes. "You know it's dangerous. And you still put me in a hallway?"

His jaw locked. For a second, he said nothing at all.

Then he grabbed my wrist.

"Nate—"

He pulled the gold suite-access card from the booking envelope on the counter. PREMIER SUITE was printed across the front. My patient identification band stayed on my wrist.

He placed the access card in Harper’s lap.

"There," he said. "Now it's settled."

Harper looked down at it. She didn't take it off.

The Westbridge doctor came on the line. I answered her questions in a voice I barely recognized. Then Emily handed the phone to the triage physician. He examined me, reviewed the fetal tracing, and explained the risks of a transfer. Westbridge accepted me. Only after the doctors agreed I was stable enough to travel did the nurse arrange an ambulance.

---

The ambulance came in twenty minutes.

Derek stepped up as the paramedics lifted me onto the stretcher. "Give me the folder. I'll hold your prenatal records so they don't get lost in all this."

"I've got them."

"You're in labor. You'll drop them." He was already pulling the envelope out of my hands. "Relax. I'm security. It's literally my job."

He walked off toward the desk with it. I watched the back of his uniform until the paramedic asked me to lie flat.

They loaded me in. A minute later, Derek jogged out and tossed the envelope onto the bench beside me. "All there."

The doors stayed open while the driver checked something. I flipped through the pages with shaking fingers. Ultrasound reports. Glucose test. Blood work.

I flipped again.

The hypertension risk assessment was gone. The report that said my pressure could spike during delivery. The report that told any doctor exactly how to keep me alive.

"Wait," I said. "There's a page missing."

The paramedic leaned over. "Which one?"

I looked up through the open ambulance doors, past the curb, past the bright glass entrance of St. Catherine's.

Inside, Nathaniel was pushing Harper's wheelchair toward the elevator. Toward the suite I'd paid for. She said something, and he bent down to hear it, smiling.

Neither of them looked back.

The doors swung shut. The siren started.

I wrapped both arms around my stomach. My daughter shifted under my hands, small and strong.

"It's just us, baby," I whispered.

Then the monitor on the wall beeped, high and sharp, and the paramedic's face changed.

"Her pressure's climbing. Fast."
