Chapter 3

That evening, I received my compound assignment: general support duties, supply management, basic training assistance. Standard Omega work. The kind of thing I'd done for three years at Ironveil without anyone noticing.

My cabin was at the compound's eastern edge—small, serviceable, with a narrow bed and a window that looked out onto the training yard. I unpacked my single bag, folded my clothes into the dresser, and set the reassignment papers on the desk. The heating unit hummed in the corner, a low mechanical sound that filled the silence.

It died at midnight.

I woke to cold air and frost forming on the inside of the window. I sat up, pulled the blanket tighter, and looked at the heating unit. It sat silent in the corner, completely dark.

I was considering whether to wait until morning when someone knocked.

I opened the door. A young woman stood there, her Omega insignia visible at her collar. She looked nervous.

"Lily Brooks?" she asked.

"Yes."

"I'm Dara Simms. Maintenance. Your heating unit—" She gestured past me at the dead machine. "I got the alert. I'm so sorry. It's the coldest night this week, and the replacement part won't arrive until Thursday at the earliest."

I blinked. "You got an alert? At midnight?"

Dara nodded quickly. "The system monitors all units. When one fails, it sends an automatic notification." She held out a folded paper. "I have a temporary relocation order. Packhouse guest quarters, third floor. Until we can get your unit repaired."

I took the paper and read it by the dim light from my cabin. It was typed, formal, and signed by someone in facilities management I'd never heard of.

"The packhouse," I repeated.

Dara shifted her weight. "It's standard protocol for heating failures. Especially in winter. The guest quarters are empty right now, so—" She stopped mid-sentence, her eyes going slightly distant. Then she refocused. "You can gather your things. I'll walk you over."

I packed my bag again—it hadn't been fully unpacked anyway—and followed Dara across the dark compound. The packhouse loomed ahead, three stories of stone and timber, lights glowing in a few windows.

As we climbed the interior stairs to the third floor, the mind-link opened.

*"She's in the building. Her scent is in the stairwell. I can smell the jasmine through the floor. This is fine. This is a normal infrastructure response."*

I stopped mid-step, my hand on the railing. Raphael's voice. His thoughts. I looked up at the ceiling above me.

Dara glanced back. "You okay?"

"Fine," I said quietly. I kept climbing.

The guest room was small but warmer than my cabin had been. Dara showed me the heating controls, apologized twice more, and left. I set my bag on the bed and pulled out the relocation order, smoothing it flat on the desk.

I folded it into a small, precise square and tucked it into my jacket pocket.

Then I lay down on the bed, stared at the ceiling, and listened to the faint hum of the building's heating system. Somewhere above me, Raphael was awake. I could feel the mind-link like a thread pulled taut.

I didn't sleep much that night.

---

The next morning, a memo appeared in every compound personnel file.

I found mine slipped under my door when I opened it at dawn. Three pages, neatly typed, with a header that read: **PACK CARBON-EFFICIENCY PROTOCOL – MANDATORY COMPLIANCE.**

I picked it up and started reading.

The memo outlined a new policy requiring wolves in adjacent quarters to share transport to morning training runs. The goal, it explained, was to reduce the compound's carbon footprint and improve resource allocation. There was a detailed calculation on page two—complete with charts—that referenced a study from a pack I'd never heard of.

My name was on the transport assignment list. Vehicle 7. Driver: Alpha Raphael Montgomery.

I read the memo twice. Then I folded it carefully and put it in my jacket pocket next to the relocation order.

---

The first morning, I stood outside the packhouse at 5:45 a.m. as instructed. The air was cold and sharp. My breath misted.

A black SUV pulled up. Raphael was behind the wheel. He didn't look at me when I opened the passenger door and climbed in.

"Seatbelt," he said flatly.

I buckled it. He pulled onto the road that circled the compound. The interior smelled like black pine and something else—a faint chemical scent I couldn't place. An air freshener, maybe.

The mind-link opened immediately.

*"The air freshener was a mistake. It's making the pine scent stronger. She can definitely smell it. Why did I install an air freshener? What is wrong with me?"*

I kept my face neutral and looked out the window. The training yard came into view.

*"Don't look at her. Eyes on the road. You are a professional. You have been an Alpha for six years. You can drive a car without—she's folding something. What is she folding?"*

I had pulled the carbon-efficiency memo from my pocket and was refolding it into a smaller square. I did it slowly, precisely, the way I always did when I was thinking.

Raphael's hands tightened on the steering wheel. His face didn't move.

*"She's reading the memo. She knows. She has to know. No one reads a three-page carbon protocol twice unless they know it's fake. Moon Goddess, I referenced a study from a pack that doesn't exist."*

I tucked the memo back into my pocket. Raphael parked the SUV near the training yard gate and got out without a word. I followed.

He walked toward the drills. I headed for the supply shed.

Behind me, I heard his voice—cold, authoritative—barking orders at the Delta formation. Through the mind-link, I heard something else entirely.

*"She folded the memo. She keeps it in her pocket. Why does she keep it? Is that good? That can't be good."*

I smiled to myself and opened the supply shed door.

---

This continued for a week.

Every morning, I sat in the passenger seat of Vehicle 7 while Raphael drove in absolute silence. His face stayed stone-cold. His thoughts spiraled.

*"Day three. She's wearing the same jacket. The memo is still in the pocket. I can see the corner of it when she shifts."*

*"Day five. I told my Beta the carbon study was real. He asked which pack published it. I said I'd send him the citation. I cannot send him a citation for a study I invented. He's smirking. I know he's smirking."*

*"Day seven. She took the memo out again. She's reading page two. The chart page. No one reads the chart page unless they're checking your math. Did I make a math error? There's no math to check. It's fake. She knows it's fake."*

I reread the memo occasionally, my expression carefully blank. I didn't say anything. I just folded it back into my pocket and watched the compound roll past the window.

Raphael's knuckles went white on the steering wheel.

---

Meanwhile, back in Ironveil, Tucker was making calls.

I didn't know this yet. But I would.

He contacted Morgan Boyd through a back-channel message two days after I arrived at Silvercrest. His pitch was precise: my transfer wasn't a defeat. It was an opening.

If Morgan's family resources could spread a specific narrative—that my mind-link ability was unauthorized, that I was a rogue sympathizer placed inside Silvercrest's compound—it would force Raphael to distance himself from me. It would reopen the political landscape.

Morgan listened. She agreed provisionally. And she began documenting every word Tucker said, every request he made, filing it carefully as insurance.

She was already calculating the point at which he would become a liability instead of a tool.

But I didn't know any of that yet.

All I knew was that Raphael's thoughts were getting louder, more frantic, and that the folded memo in my pocket was starting to feel like evidence of something I couldn't quite name.

I sat in the passenger seat on the eighth morning, the memo in my hand, and wondered how long he planned to keep this up.

In my head, I heard him address his Beta by name: *"Stop smirking, or I will reassign you to the northern border in January."*

I looked out the window and folded the memo one more time.
