Chapter 3

Lena's POV

"She asked about us before we even went on our first date."

Caleb dropped his coffee mug onto the kitchen island. The ceramic clattered against the scarred wood, spilling dark liquid over the rim.

I stopped wiping the counter. The rag went still in my hand. "And what did you say?"

"I told her the truth." He leaned over the surface, planting both palms flat against the wood. "I told her I only knew you for a few days. I told her I liked you."

I stared at his hands. The knuckles were white. "You told her that."

"I also told her that you left," Caleb pressed, his voice hardening into stone. "I didn't marry Mara because you were gone, Lena. I married her because she stayed. She built a life here. She actually walked into my life and refused to leave."

"So she knew." I gripped the edge of the sink. "She knew before she mailed that wedding invitation. She knew exactly what she was doing. Why didn't you tell me three years ago?"

"Tell you how?" Caleb pushed off the counter, pacing a tight circle in the kitchen. "You wouldn't even answer the phone. I called you twice the week before the wedding. You ignored both calls."

"I was trying to protect myself."

"You were running. You always run." Caleb stopped, pointing a rigid finger at the floor between us. "You left Cheyenne at dawn, and you left your sister's wedding unanswered. You didn't give anyone a chance to explain."

The accusation hit like a blow. We weren't just talking about Mara anymore. We were staring straight at the silence we had built between us, the cowardice I had worn like armor.

"I need to work," I said, turning my back to him. "I will get the pasture photos."

"Don't hide in the barn, Lena," he called after me.

"I am not hiding. I am doing my job."

The old tack room in the main barn smelled of oiled leather, dry hay, and rusted iron. I needed the historical pasture albums for the buyer's digital portfolio. I scanned the messy shelves until I found the heavy metal box Mara used for archives, shoved under a broken saddle stand.

I dragged it out and popped the rusted latch. Dust flew into the air, coating my sleeves.

Beneath stacks of polaroids and faded landscape shots, a bundle of thick envelopes sat tied with coarse twine. My name stared back at me in Mara's sharp, slanted cursive. None of them had stamps.

I pulled the top envelope free and ripped the seal. The paper felt heavy, expensive. The date at the top of the page was three months after I drove away from Cheyenne.

I didn't meet him by accident, the blue ink read. I went to Ryder Ranch because you left that picture on your desk. Mom said you actually thought about staying for a guy. You never stay for anyone. I didn't think you had the right to make him wait.

My chest tightened. She tracked him down. She didn't stumble into his life; she hunted him down because I had looked at him twice.

"Aunt Lena!"

I dropped the paper onto the dirt floor. Rosie trotted down the center aisle of the barn, waving a plastic bucket.

"I need the blue chalk," she announced. "It is on the high shelf."

"Hold on, Rosie," I said, stepping out of the tack room.

A loud crack echoed through the barn before I could reach her.

The pregnant heifer in the adjacent stall bellowed, slamming her massive weight against the wooden partition. The rusted hinges screamed. The top rail splintered, firing jagged wood shards into the aisle.

I lunged forward. I scooped Rosie up by the waist and threw us both behind the concrete feed bunker.

"Caleb!" I screamed.

Heavy boots pounded the dirt floor. Caleb sprinted into the barn, grabbing a heavy steel chain from the wall. He secured the broken gate, his muscles straining against the panicked animal. The metal links rattled against the wood. Once the latch clicked shut, he dropped to his knees beside the bunker.

"Are you hurt?" He checked Rosie first, running rough hands over her shoulders and back.

"I'm okay," Rosie sniffled, burying her face into my neck. "Aunt Lena grabbed me."

Caleb shifted his gaze to me. A jagged piece of wood had sliced a deep line down my forearm. Blood dripped down my skin, soaking into the cuff of my flannel shirt.

"Let me see," he ordered, pulling a clean gray bandana from his back pocket.

He wrapped it around my arm, pressing hard against the cut. Then his eyes dropped to the dirt floor.

The letters lay scattered next to my boots.

His hand froze. He recognized the handwriting instantly.

"I won't read them in front of her," I said, keeping my voice steady. "But she wrote them to me. I have the right to know what my sister wanted to say."

Caleb didn't reach for the envelopes. He tied the bandana tight, securing the knot with rough efficiency.

"Just don't treat an unmailed letter like a final verdict," he warned.

He picked up his daughter and walked out of the barn.

That night, I sat on the edge of the guest bed. The house was dead quiet, save for the wind rattling the windowpanes. I opened the second envelope. This one was dated a month before the wedding.

The tone shifted from defiance to a late confession.

I started talking to him just to prove I could win, Mara wrote. But he actually fell in love with me. That made it worse. It made me terrified you would come back. I hid that photo in the office because I couldn't throw it away, but I couldn't let you see it either.

I traced the ink with my thumb.

You thought I brought Caleb into your world for the first time at the wedding, the final paragraph read. I didn't. I found him from your world, and made myself the one who stayed.

The words burned on the page. The argument we had three years ago wasn't just sibling rivalry. I had guessed her insecurity during our final fight, but the wound was far deeper than I ever knew. She had stolen my secret, and it haunted her until the day she died.

I stood up, gripping the crumpled paper, and walked down the hall.

Caleb sat on the porch steps, staring out into the dark pasture. A single yellow bulb illuminated the wooden planks. The screen door squeaked as I pushed it open.

"Read this," I demanded, shoving the letter into his chest.

He caught the paper before it fell into the dirt. He didn't ask what it was. He held it up to the pale light and read the final lines.

"What else are you hiding from me?" I asked, my voice cutting through the night air.

Caleb stared at the page. The muscle in his jaw jumped. He closed his eyes, folding the paper in half with a sharp crease.

"Whatever you want to know tomorrow," Caleb said, looking up at me, "I will answer."
