Chapter 3

The morning fog had not yet lifted when a black SUV stopped outside the front gates of Blackthorn Manor.

Lucian Hale stepped out, wearing a heavy dark coat, his face set in hard lines.

Morgana met him at the base of the grand staircase, arms crossed over her chest. "The Vale enforcer. What gives you the right to enter my house uninvited?"

"I’m not here to talk to you, Morgana," Lucian replied, ignoring her guard dogs by the door.

I came down the stairs carrying a single duffel bag containing my father's pack seal and my passport.

"Ariana," Morgana said, stepping into my path, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You are in mourning. You do not leave this estate without my permission."

"Step out of the way," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the guards take a half-step back. "Her father gave her to your son. Your son is dead. She is coming with me."

Morgana scoffed, though her chin hitched upward. "She is the Blackthorn widow! The pack laws—"

"Pack laws don't apply to a hostage," I told her, meeting her gaze squarely.

For the first time in twelve months, Morgana found nothing submissive in my eyes. She pressed her lips into a thin, bloodless seam and stepped back.

Lucian took my duffel bag with one hand and guided me toward the SUV with the other. "Get in."

We did not exchange a single word during the forty-minute drive north.

The vehicle pulled through the fortified gates of the Hale Pack compound, pulling up to the rear entrance of a private medical facility tucked deep behind pine trees.

A tall man in a white lab coat waited at the glass doors.

"Ariana," Dr. Adrian Cross greeted me, extending a hand before ushering us down a sterile white hallway. "Lucian called ahead. We have the clean room prepared."

"Just run the full panel, Adrian," Lucian said, shutting the clinic door behind us. "Check everything. Neurotoxins, genetic suppressants, biological markers."

I sat on the edge of the examination table and rolled up my left sleeve. "Look for Moonroot."

Adrian paused, his syringe hovering above my arm. "Moonroot is an ancient pack compound. It’s strictly regulated by the Continental Council."

"Just draw the blood," I said.

The needle slid under my skin. Adrian filled three separate vials with dark crimson liquid, sealed them, and carried them directly to a digital centrifuge on the steel counter.

The machine hummed, spinning the blood into separate layers. Adrian entered a sequence of commands on his terminal, his expression shifting from clinical neutrality to disbelief.

"This is impossible," Adrian muttered, tapping the monitor with a pen.

Lucian stepped closer. "What is it?"

"The Moonroot concentration in her bloodstream is off the charts," Adrian said, turning the screen toward us. "A standard medicinal dose for an agitated wolf is two drops a month. She has enough active residue in her system to sedate a war pack."

"What does it do?" Lucian demanded, his voice dangerously low.

"It doesn't kill immediately," Adrian explained, pointing to the jagged red line on the graph. "It coats the neurological pathways that connect a shifter to her wolf spirit. It slowly cripples the immune system, destroys natural healing, and degrades muscle density. Over time, an Alpha-blood shifter becomes no stronger than an ordinary human."

My hands rested flat on the paper covering the examination table. "How long has it been in my system, Adrian?"

Adrian adjusted his glasses, reading the secondary breakdown. "Based on the cellular accumulation in your marrow... almost a year. Eleven to twelve months of daily ingestion."

The room went dead silent.

"Every single morning," I murmured, staring at the floor. "She handed it to me in a crystal glass. She called it a restorative tonic to help me survive the grief."

"She wasn't trying to help you survive," Lucian said, his jaw tightening until the muscle ticked beneath his skin. "She was breaking your wolf so you couldn't take back your father's seat."

"If she took two more weeks of this dosage," Adrian added grimly, "her wolf would have gone permanently dormant. Irreversible necrosis of the spiritual bond."

Lucian turned toward the door and pulled out an encrypted satellite phone.

"Eli," Lucian barked into the receiver the second the line connected. "Scour every private airfield within six hundred miles. Pull the flight manifests for the Blackthorn charter fleet over the last three weeks. I want satellite tracking on Selene Blackthorn’s personal vehicle, and I want an asset inside the Grand Pavilion catering team before noon."

"What are we hunting, Boss?" Eli's voice crackled through the speaker.

"A dead man," Lucian said, and hung up.

He walked back to my side, his eyes scanning the pale skin of my wrists where faint blue veins showed through. "We start the detox flush right now. Adrian has synthetic neutralizers that can burn the residue out within forty-eight hours."

"There is no time for forty-eight hours," I said, sliding down from the table. "Celeste's birthday banquet is tonight."

"You are not going back there," Lucian countered. "You can barely maintain your body temperature."

"I am going," I said. "They took twelve months of my life. They poisoned my blood. I will not hide in a bunker while they celebrate."

Before Lucian could argue, my phone began vibrating violently on the metal tray beside the cotton swabs.

The screen illuminated with a familiar caller ID: *Selene.*

Lucian glanced down at the display, his hand hovering near the phone. "Don't answer it."

I picked it up and tapped the green button, switching the audio to speakerphone.

"Ariana?" Selene’s voice sang through the speaker, light and mocking. "Where did you run off to? Aunt Morgana said you threw a tantrum and left with your father's old stray."

"What do you want, Selene?" I asked, keeping every tremor out of my tone.

"I’m just checking on you, sister," Selene purred. A faint rustle of silk drifted across the line. "I wanted to thank you. Truly. You took such wonderful care of the estate while the rest of us were... occupied. You paid off all those messy debts from the southern border. We couldn't have managed without your hard work."

"Get to the point."

"The point is simple," Selene replied, her tone dropping into a poisonous whisper. "Stay away from the Grand Pavilion tonight. Don't embarrass yourself by crawling to Celeste's party in that pathetic black dress. Aunt Morgana was being polite, but I’ll be direct: you don't belong at our table anymore."

"Is that a threat?"

"It's a warning, darling," Selene giggled. "If you actually show up tonight, you might see someone... someone who isn't supposed to be here anymore. And a frail little widow like you wouldn't survive the shock."

I held the phone closer to my ear. "Who is with you, Selene?"

"Nobody who concerns you," she said dismissively.

Then, right in the background of the call, came the distinct clink of crystal against crystal.

A deep, amused male voice resonated through the receiver, rich and dripping with familiar arrogance.

*“Tell her to stay in her room, Selene. I don't want to deal with tears before dinner.”*

The low laugh that followed sliced directly through the air in the clinic room.

My blood turned to pure frost.

My fingers locked around the phone's plastic frame. Every breath seized in my throat.

It was him.

The cadence, the casual cruelty, the low baritone that used to whisper promises against my skin before we slept.

Kael.

He was breathing. He was drinking champagne. He was laughing while his cousin warned me away from his sister's party.

Lucian reached out and firmly pressed the red icon on the screen, cutting the connection.

The silence rushed back into the room like suffocating water.

Lucian didn't ask me who spoke. He didn't demand proof. He simply looked at my face, saw the devastation turn to ash, and placed both hands on my shoulders.

"He's alive," I whispered, the reality finally tearing through the last shred of my illusions.

Every tear I had shed over an empty coffin, every night I had spent shivering in a cold bed, every bitter drop of poison I had swallowed out of loyalty—it was never mourning.

It was an execution disguised as an inheritance.

"He's alive," I repeated, looking up at Lucian, the cold fire finally taking hold in my veins. "And he's coming to that party tonight."
