Chapter 2

Owen brings me the business card just before closing. He sets it on the counter without a word, but his eyes linger on my face. He's worried. I can see it in the way his hand hovers near the card, like he wants to take it back.

I finish tying the ribbon on a bouquet. The silk slides smooth between my fingers. When I'm done, I pick up the card and turn it over. Hughes Group. The logo is embossed in silver. I set it face-down and go back to work.

"Two men," Owen says quietly. "They asked about you."

I nod. My hands don't shake. I've had three years to practice stillness.

"I told them I don't know anything," he continues. "Because I don't. But Vivienne—" He stops. He never calls me by the name I gave him unless something's wrong. "Maybe you should go home early today."

"I'm fine," I say. The words come out flat. I mean them. Whatever Beckett Hughes wants, he can't touch the part of me that matters. That part died in a hospital hallway three years ago.

Owen doesn't push. He never does. That's why I've stayed.

The next morning, Beckett comes himself.

I'm in the back room when I hear the door chime. I step out, carrying a bundle of eucalyptus, and stop. He's standing in the center of the shop, taking up too much space. He wears a charcoal suit that probably costs more than Owen's monthly rent. His eyes find me immediately.

I set the eucalyptus on the counter and wait.

"I know who you are," he says. His voice is cold. Commanding. The voice of a man who has never needed to justify himself. "And I know what you did."

I don't respond. I reach for the pruning shears and begin trimming stems.

"Where is she?" he demands. "Where's Lily?"

My hands pause. Just for a second. Then I continue cutting. The blades make clean, sharp sounds against the wood.

"I asked you a question," Beckett says. He steps closer. "You took my daughter and disappeared. I want to know where she is."

I look up. Our eyes meet. His are hard, certain. Mine must be empty, because something flickers across his face—confusion, maybe. Or unease.

"You have nothing to say?" His jaw tightens. "Fine. Then I'll make this simple. Tell me where Lily is, or I will dismantle everything you have. This shop. Your life. Whatever pathetic existence you've built for yourself in the last three years."

I go back to trimming stems. The eucalyptus smells sharp and clean. I focus on that.

Beckett reaches into his jacket and pulls out a manila envelope. He throws it on the counter. Photographs spill out—images I've never seen before. A woman who looks like me from behind, her face turned away. A man's hand on her waist. A hotel room door.

"Still going to pretend?" he asks. His voice is low now. Dangerous. "I have proof. I've always had proof. You cheated on me. You got pregnant with another man's child. And when I found out, you ran."

I pick up one of the photographs. Study it. The woman's hair is the right color. The angle is careful. Deliberate. I set it down and look at him.

"You came all this way," I say quietly, "to show me something I've never seen before."

Then I turn my back and walk to the sink. I wash the shears under cold water. Behind me, the silence stretches. I can feel him staring. I can feel the weight of his confusion, his anger. I don't care.

"You think ignoring me will work?" he says finally. His voice has an edge I don't remember. Something raw beneath the control. "You think I won't follow through?"

I dry the shears and hang them on their hook. Then I pick up the eucalyptus and begin arranging it in a vase. My movements are precise. Practiced. The same way I've done this a thousand times before.

Beckett stands there for another moment. I can hear his breathing. It's faster than it should be. He's not used to being dismissed. He's not used to his certainty cracking.

"This isn't over," he says.

I don't turn around. I hear his footsteps cross the floor. The door chimes. Then he's gone.

I finish the arrangement. My hands are steady. My face shows nothing. But something in my chest has shifted—not fear, not anger. Just the faint recognition that the ghost I buried three years ago has found its way back to the surface.

And this time, it wants answers I can't give.
