Chapter 3

The bruise appeared on a Tuesday.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table, swinging her legs. I was making eggs. She reached for the orange juice and her sleeve pulled back.

A purple mark. Dark. Spreading across her forearm like spilled ink.

"Lily, did you fall?"

She looked down. Touched it with one finger. "I don't think so."

I knelt beside her. Pressed the bruise gently. She didn't flinch. "Does it hurt?"

She shook her head.

I pulled her other sleeve up. Two more. Smaller. One on her wrist. One near her elbow.

"Baby, where did these come from?"

She shrugged. Went back to her juice.

I told myself it was nothing. Kids bruised. They ran into things. Lily played at the sitter's. She climbed. She fell.

But Wednesday there were more. Thursday, a dark bloom spread across her collarbone. I hadn't touched her there. Hadn't seen her bump anything.

Friday night, her nose started bleeding.

She was brushing her teeth. I heard her call from the bathroom. Her voice was small. Scared.

I found her leaning over the sink. Blood running from her nose. Bright red. Too much.

I grabbed a towel. Pressed it to her face. "Tilt your head forward, baby."

She did. The blood soaked through. I grabbed another towel.

Ten minutes. Twenty. Thirty.

It wouldn't stop.

I called the sitter. Asked her to meet me at the hospital. Wrapped Lily in her coat and carried her to the car.

Seattle Children's Hospital was fifteen minutes away. I made it in nine.

The ER nurse took one look at Lily and brought us straight back. No waiting. That scared me more than the blood.

They stopped the nosebleed with packing. Took blood samples. Asked questions I didn't have answers to. *Has she been sick? Fever? Fatigue? Loss of appetite?*

I thought back. She'd been tired. More than usual. I'd thought it was the late nights. The cargo shifts. The sitter putting her to bed instead of me.

They admitted her.

By Thursday evening, a doctor was sitting across from me in a small room with gray walls and a box of tissues on the table.

Her name was Dr. Patel. She had kind eyes. The kind that had delivered bad news before.

"Lily has acute myeloid leukemia," she said. "It's an aggressive subtype. The bruising, the nosebleeds—those are symptoms of her platelet count dropping. Her bone marrow isn't producing healthy blood cells."

I stared at her. The words didn't land. They hovered in the air between us like something I could still refuse.

"What does that mean?" My voice sounded far away.

"It means we need to start treatment immediately. Chemotherapy. And we'll need to find a bone marrow donor for a transplant. That's her best chance."

"A donor."

"Yes. Ideally a biological parent. Siblings if she has any. The closer the genetic match, the better the outcome."

I pressed my thumb into my wrist. Hard. "I can be tested."

"We'll test you today. But we should also reach out to her father."

I looked at the tissue box. At the gray walls. At the fluorescent lights that made everything look flat and cold.

"I'll contact him," I said.

Dr. Patel nodded. She handed me paperwork. Consent forms. Treatment plans. A pamphlet about pediatric leukemia that I folded and put in my bag without reading.

They tested me that afternoon. Drew blood. Swabbed my cheek. Told me results would take a few days.

I sat in Lily's room and watched her sleep. She looked small in the hospital bed. Wires and tubes. A pulse oximeter clipped to her finger.

I took out my phone.

I didn't have Calum's number. Not anymore. He'd changed it. Or maybe he'd just blocked me.

I found his publicist's contact online. A PR firm in Manhattan. I called.

The receptionist transferred me twice. I left a voicemail. Then another. I sent an email with Lily's medical records attached. Subject line: *Urgent – Bone Marrow Match Needed for Daughter.*

I waited.

Friday. Saturday. Sunday.

No response.

On Monday, Dr. Patel came back. She sat in the same chair. Same kind eyes.

"You're not a match," she said gently. "We need to test her father."

I nodded. I'd known. Somehow I'd known.

I called the publicist again. Left another voicemail. Sent another email.

Nothing.

On Tuesday, I was scrolling through my phone—looking for any contact, any thread that might connect me to Calum—when I saw it.

An Instagram post. A celebrity gossip account. A photo of Calum and Vienna at a charity gala. The caption: *Captain Calum Stone in Seattle this week for Aviation Heroes Foundation event. Staying at The Fairmont Olympic through Thursday.*

I stared at the photo. Vienna's hand on his arm. Both of them smiling.

I looked at Lily. Asleep again. The chemo had started. She'd been sick all morning.

I stood. Grabbed my coat.

The sitter was in the hallway. I told her I'd be back in an hour.

She touched my arm. "Is everything okay?"

I didn't answer.

I walked to the elevator. Pressed the button for the lobby.

The Fairmont Olympic was downtown. Twenty minutes if I drove fast.

I drove fast.
