Chapter 1

My daughter was declared dead after unsuccessful emergency treatment following a car accident—so I took the entire emergency team hostage.

Three doctors, two nurses—I knocked them out with a strong sedative in the operating room. Now they trembled in fear.

Holding a megaphone, I calmly announced that if my daughter didn’t wake up within thirty minutes, I would start killing.

Not a single medical worker involved in her treatment would be spared.

From outside the door, the hospital director screamed in panic.

"She’s already dead! How can we save her? Not even a miracle could bring her back!"

"The doctors and nurses did everything they could! If you want justice, go after the driver who hit her—why should innocent people die with your daughter?"

I gave a cold laugh.

"Bullshit! My daughter is not dead!"

"You have thirty minutes left. When the time’s up, I make my move!"

...

Inside the operating room, the five medical staff were tied up tightly, mouths stuffed with gauze, staring at me in terror.

Richard Walker, the hospital director, spoke in a low growl outside the door, barely containing his irritation.

"Resuscitation always carries risks—you signed the consent form, you have to accept that!"

"We’re just as heartbroken as you about Lily, but that’s no excuse for kidnapping medical personnel!"

"Open the door now—there are three more surgeries waiting. If you delay them, can you take responsibility?"

Leaning against the operating table, I rubbed my temples, frowning.

I didn’t answer. Instead, I raised my arm and fired a shot straight into the door.

Sparks and splinters flew. The pounding and shouting outside stopped instantly.

Then came Walker’s furious roar:

"Emily Parker, you’re out of your damn mind! Your daughter is dead—what does that have to do with the hospital?"

"If you don’t open this door right now, I’ll call the police and make sure you rot in prison for the rest of your life!"

I curled my lips in a half-smile. Call the police? That was exactly what I wanted.

Ten minutes later, the sound of police sirens wailed in the distance.

A steady, authoritative male voice came from outside.

"This is David Miller from the City Police Department, Major Crimes Unit. Ms. Parker, please stay calm!"

"We’ve already identified the hit-and-run driver and are pursuing him at full force—he will face severe justice!"

"We’re as saddened as you are that the child couldn’t be saved, but the doctors and nurses did everything they could. Blaming them isn’t fair!"

Listening to these righteous-sounding words, I could only find them laughable.

Fair to them? Who had ever been fair to my Lily?

Outside the operating room, chaos erupted.

Family members of other patients, held back by the police line, shouted angrily:

"What the hell? Are you going to operate or not? My mother’s waiting for life-saving surgery!"

"Yeah! Just because her kid died, she’s gone insane—if my family’s treatment gets delayed, I won’t forgive her!"

"She’s clearly deranged! Officer, people like her are a danger to society! Just shoot her already!"

David Miller’s voice rose sharply, leaving no room for argument.

"Everyone step back and stay quiet—don’t provoke the suspect!"

The next second, his tone softened, as if trying to reason with me.

"Ms. Parker, I understand the pain you’re in right now."

"But think about it—these people you’ve taken hostage are also someone else’s children and parents. Their families are waiting for them to come home safe."

"You’re a nurse yourself—please, put yourself in their shoes."

I gave a bitter smile, my voice hoarse as I shouted back:

"The biggest mistake of my life was working at this hospital! If I hadn’t, Lily wouldn’t have—"

The crushing grief almost drowned me. The second half of the sentence caught in my throat.

I wiped away my tears and took a deep breath.
