My Cold Wife is a Movie Star, but the Leading Man Surprised Me! Chapter 1
One
I nearly forgot how to breathe. In this quiet room, the sound from my phone was piercingly loud.
"You're so cruel. Stop bullying me."
I could recognize that seductive voice even if it turned to ashes. It was Wendy.
Just a moment ago, she had slapped me hard several times because I tried to get close to her, then stormed off to sleep in the guest room. Yet, on that tiny screen, she looked completely different.
With me, she was always so passive, sometimes even in pain. But in the video, she was all fiery passion, trying her best to please the man who didn't know what he looked like, eagerly responding to his every move.
The ten-minute video had already garnered millions of views, and the comments beneath it were just as unbearable.
The person I spent every day with had somehow become the object of millions of people's admiration. I felt so angry as if my blood was boiling up. My grip on the phone tightened, almost crushing it. I immediately decided to confront her.
The screen kept flickering in the dark room. After staring at it for a while, I realized Wendy was video chatting with someone. Holding my breath, I listened to her conversation.
"See how obedient I am? You told me not to let that old man touch me, so I didn't. I even slapped him twice, haha."
"You're amazing! Be good, and you'll get what you want."
"Oh, stop teasing me, you're always bullying me..."
The voice from the phone clearly belonged to a young man, the same one in the video. It seemed Wendy hadn't just cheated on me. She had found herself a younger lover.
Reeling from the shock, I returned to the bedroom balcony. Amidst the swirling smoke, I began to reflect on my relationship with Wendy.
We met through a blind date. Growing up as a straightforward guy, I always wanted to marry a traditional woman. Wendy, a college professor, not only had beauty and poise but also a calm demeanor. She was, to me, the perfect wife.
I was seven years older than her, so after we married, I took care of her like she was my treasure.
I never felt like I owed her anything. Whenever I wasn't working, I was by her side, and I trusted her completely when she went out to have fun. I never questioned her much.
I thought marrying such a beautiful woman was my blessing from a previous life. Never did I expect her to cheat on me, let alone play such games with a younger man.
I pitied myself, thinking that maybe it was my age, my lack of stamina, or that I just wasn't as exciting as the younger guys. She could've simply asked for a divorce instead. None of that justified her betrayal.
What hurt the most was that I had planned to reveal my true identity to her on our upcoming anniversary. On the surface, I was just a middle-aged worker, but in reality, I was the CEO of the city's largest real estate company, the Lake Group.
Two
The following day, Wendy left early, slamming the door on her way out. Judging by her temper, I guessed she wouldn't be back for at least a few days.
After a sleepless night, I hired two private investigators to follow her and finally ordered the Harley motorcycle I'd been eyeing for a while.
Just as I was enjoying the roar of the engine and taking the salesgirl for a spin around the neighborhood, I saw Wendy standing there with her arms crossed, looking furious.
She came straight at me, ready to slap me again, but I caught her wrist and pushed her away.
"Landon, have you lost your mind? You're in your thirties and you just spent over forty hundred thousand dollars on a motorcycle! Are we still supposed to live like this?"
We had about ninety thousand dollars in joint savings, and my spending half of that was enough to drive her into a rage.
I ignored Wendy's outburst and turned to the stunned salesgirl.
"Sorry to scare you. There's still over forty hundred thousand dollars on this card, keep it as a tip."
I revved up the bike and took off with the beaming beauty behind me. I was determined to spend every last cent, leaving Wendy with nothing from this marriage.
"Landon Lake! I want a divorce!"
That evening, I booked an entire club for me and my buddies. Amidst the cheers of "Tonight, everything's on Mr. Lake!" the dance floor was filled with women of all types, twisting their bodies to the beat, each trying their best to catch my attention.
"Hey, Landon, what's going on with you today?"
"Yeah, pretending to be poor these past few years has been stifling."
Everyone there was a top dog in the city's leading companies. For three years, I'd asked them to play along with my act of being poor, never revealing my true identity.
"Wendy's trying out a new kind of affair."
The moment I said it, my friends gasped, and their expressions grew severe.
I passed the video around for them to see. I knew I could trust these men. They wouldn't gossip behind my back over this.
"So, what are you planning to do?"
"I've already got people following her. I'll wait until I catch them together, then I'll deal with it."
My friends patted me on the back.
"Let us know if you need anything."
The next day, I received an email from the private investigator. The photos, videos, even surveillance footage, they had it all.
I'd considered every possibility, but the reality was even worse than I had imagined.
The man in question was Wendy's student, Aron.
I remembered this tall, skinny student. He'd come to our house a few times because of some paper he was writing. I even invited him to stay for dinner.
In the evidence, the two of them looked like a couple. They were kissing in secluded spots on campus and went to a hotel together four days a week. Aron had even become a VIP at a hotel near the school.
Just then, my work phone rang. It was Sini, my assistant.
"Mr. Lake, the list of employees eligible for promotion has been sent to your email for review."
"Anything unusual on the list?"
Rubbing my temples, I forced myself to focus on work.
"There's one student from the fourth district, bottom of the sales rankings. Despite his poor performance, his team leader keeps praising him and is considering signing him on permanently after graduation. His name is...Aron."
Three
The next day, I went with Sini to the property where Aron worked. She dropped me off at the entrance while she went to the parking lot, and I headed inside on my own.
It was lunchtime, and the employees were sitting in small groups, taking a break. I immediately spotted Wendy in the corner, crying, with Aron by her side, trying to comfort her.
"Hello, sir, is there something I can help you with?"
A young woman at the entrance quickly got up from her meal and greeted me with a standard smile, perfect for a sales rep.
"I'm looking to buy an apartment for my wife."
I said in a low voice, just loud enough for the two of us to hear. Her eyes lit up with admiration.
"Wow! Your wife must be so lucky! Does she have a particular type of layout in mind? We've got a variety of new designs to choose from."
"Nothing specific."
I replied as I slowly made my way over to Wendy, pretending to be interested in the models on display. Step by step, I moved closer until I was standing right beside her.
Then, I raised my voice. "I'm just looking for something that'll make it easy for my cheating wife and her student to have some fun."
I heard the sound of a chair scraping the floor behind me. Turning around, I saw Wendy, her face streaked with tears, staring at me in shock.
"Landon...what are you doing here?" she stammered.
"Isn't this my dear wife, Ms. Soap, the youngest professor at Sunrise University? What's the matter? Why are you crying?"
I asked, feigning surprise as I reached out, pretending to wipe away her tears.
I had to admit. Wendy's beauty was unparalleled. Her soft curls were tied up in a youthful ponytail, and even in a simple white dress, her skin looked smooth and radiant, almost glowing. Her beautiful face made her age impossible to guess.
But despite her sweet, innocent appearance, her body was undeniably seductive. Her dress clung tightly in all the right places, accentuating her curves.
Before I could touch Wendy, Aron slapped my hand away.
"Don't touch her!" he shouted.
"You're Aron, right? I remember you. You've had dinner at my house before."
"You're the one making Ms. Soap cry! How dare you come here!"
Aron's face twisted with anger as he pointed at me, shouting, while Wendy tried to hold him back.
"Landon, what...what are you talking about? Cheating? A student?"
Wendy was much quicker on her feet than Aron, immediately seizing on the critical point.
"Oh, that. My boss's wife is a teacher too, and it turns out she's been caught cheating with one of her students. So my boss asked me to help him find a new apartment for her."
Wendy's face went pale, and people around us started to whisper and exchange curious glances.
"Is the boss into something kinky?"
"Seems like a decent guy, though."
"Poor guy, he's got it rough..."
Wendy, unsure whether I was telling the truth or hinting at her situation, decided to play dumb.
"So, Wendy, why are you here? And with a student, no less? Could it be... that you've got something going on too?"
Four
"Ms. Soap has been saving her money for years, and you just blew it on a motorcycle, then handed over forty thousand dollars as a tip to the saleswoman."
Aron suddenly chimed in before Wendy could respond.
"Spending that much on a saleswoman...I think it's you who's cheating! Ms. Soap just came to me to vent, what's wrong with that?"
"Yeah, Landon! I think you're the one who's got issues," Wendy echoed, quickly jumping on Aron's defense.
Their back-and-forth accusations made me chuckle.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. Wendy's voice filled the entire sales center.
People gathered around, watching with interest. The men stared with wide eyes, some even smirking, while the women turned red and hurried away in embarrassment.
"So, Wendy." I said, my tone calm and mocking, "whose fault is it again?"
"Aron, look at what you've done!"
Wendy screeched, her face flushed with rage and humiliation. In a fury, she slapped Aron across the face, the sound echoing throughout the room.
"You said you wouldn't let this go public! How did it end up online?" she demanded.
Realizing what she'd just said, Wendy clamped her mouth shut, but it was too late. Her words had given everything away. She had just confessed to the very thing she'd been trying to deny.
"I didn't show your face! Why are you admitting to it?"
Aron stammered, still stunned by the slap.
"What the hell are you idiots doing, watching filth like that during work hours? Turn it off, now!"
A large, heavyset man lumbered down the stairs, looking disheveled and furious. His gut bulged beneath his shirt, and he rubbed his eyes as if he'd just woken up from a nap. This must have been one of the department supervisors.
"Clearly, nobody like him wouldn't recognize me." I thought.
"Mr. James, nothing serious, just a couple having an argument here. I'll handle it and get them out of here, please go back and rest."
Aron smiled at the fat man, full of extreme fawning. No wonder he could get the team leader to turn him into a regular employee.
"Get out if you're not buying anything! You look like you can't afford it anyway!"
"Sorry, Mr. James," I replied, my voice steady, "were you talking to me?"
This kind of group leader even said such words to the guests, no wonder the performance was at the bottom of the list. I took out my black card and handed it to the saleswoman who just received me.
"I'll take that entire building. The one on the left side of the model, the five-story penthouse. Go ahead and charge it."
"Landon, stop acting like a big shot. You make a few thousand a month at best, and now you're pretending you can buy a whole building?"
Wendy wrapped her arm around Aron's, pulling him close.
"Let's not waste any more time. Aron and I were meant to be. Yes, I cheated, so what?
"Aron is young, good-looking, and charming. Any woman would fall for him. You're nothing but an old loser. If my family hadn't pressured me to get married, do you think I would have chosen someone like you?
"You barely make any money, and every gift you've ever given me is cheap junk. I'm done with you.
"You're old and broke. Why would I stay with you?"
I let her finish, then smiled, "Wendy, are you sure you won't regret this?"
I knew this day would come from the moment I found out she was cheating on me, but I didn't realize how bad I was in Wendy's eyes.
I know I don't have much emotional intelligence, so everything I gave her was a private high-fashion item from a big-name brand, and my unique heart for her turned out to be a cottage industry in her eyes.
"I'll see you at City Hall tomorrow. Our joint savings, whether you steal or beg for it, better be in my account within a month."
She threw one last glare at me before clinging tightly to Aron, snuggling into his chest.
"What's the fucking point? Get the fuck outta here."
The fat supervisor on the second floor was cursing when Sini happened to come in.
"Did you just speak to Mr. Lake like that? Who gave you the guts?"
Meanwhile, the saleswoman who swiped my card respectfully handed it back.
"Mr. Lake, the total price for the properties is twenty million dollars. The transaction went through successfully."
