My child's birth mother is my best friend Chapter 1

The parent-teacher conference finished twenty minutes ahead of schedule. Jack’s teacher had praised his reading skills, handing me a crayon drawing of three stick figures beneath a crooked yellow sun.

I stopped at the bakery downtown, holding the white pastry box carefully on my lap the entire drive back. Eight years of marriage deserved a celebration, even if Kevin had claimed he would be stuck at the office until late tonight.

The front door unlocked without a sound.

I kicked off my flats in the entryway, intending to slip the cake into the fridge and light the candles before Kevin arrived. Then the rhythmic thudding from the second floor caught my ear.

A muffled groan followed.

My fingers froze against the cardboard ribbon.

The sound came from our master bedroom at the end of the hall. The door hung ajar by two inches, spilling a slice of afternoon light across the hardwood floor.

I took the stairs one step at a time, each creak swallowed by the noises drifting down. Heavy breathing. The metallic rattle of our headboard striking drywall.

Then came a voice I had known since college.

"Kevin... please," Rose gasped, her voice thick and wet. "Tell me."

"Don't talk right now," Kevin muttered, his voice ragged.

"I have to," Rose urged, followed by the rustle of twisted sheets. "How much longer are you going to let my son call her Mom?"

The air turned into ice inside my lungs.

My grip slackened. The bakery box tumbled from my hands, striking the runner carpet with a soft, hollow thud. Chocolate frosting smeared against the cardboard window.

I shoved the bedroom door wide open.

Kevin jerked back instantly, scrambling off the mattress while fumbling with his unzipped slacks. His chest was flushed red, slick with sweat. On the bed, Rose scrambled backward against the pillows, pulling our down comforter up to her chin. Her mascara ran in dark streaks across her cheekbones.

"Crystal," Kevin choked out, his eyes widening. "You weren't supposed to be home until five."

"That's your first sentence to me?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "Not an excuse? Just bad timing?"

"Crystal, let me explain," Kevin stammered, raising both hands as if approaching a wild animal. "It isn't what it looks like."

"She asked how long your son was going to call me Mom," I said, pointing directly at Rose. My finger didn't shake. "Rose. Look at me. Whose son were you talking about?"

Rose pulled the sheet higher, but her chin tilted upward, a stubborn fire replacing her initial panic.

"Jack," Rose whispered. "He's mine, Crystal."

A dry chuckle broke from my throat. It sounded foreign, even to me. "Jack is five years old. I carried him. I tore during his delivery."

"No, you didn't," Rose spat, tears spilling over her lashes. "You gave birth to an empty shell! The doctors told you the baby was born healthy, but he was already gone before they cut the cord!"

The walls seemed to lean inward.

"Stop it, Rose!" Kevin shouted, lunging toward the bed to silence her. "Shut up! You promised we would never do this!"

"I'm sick of waiting, Kevin!" Rose screamed at him, shoving his hands away. "I’ve spent five agonizing years watching my own flesh and blood call your wife 'Mommy' while I play the fun aunt! I sat in the audience at his preschool graduation while she took the photos! I can't do it anymore!"

I stared at Kevin. "What is she saying?"

Kevin didn't meet my gaze. His shoulders slumped, the guilt rolling off him in waves.

"The crash," I managed to say, the memory tearing through my mind like broken glass. "Five years ago. We were in the car together. We were both seven months pregnant. You told me... you told me you miscarried because you took the brunt of the impact to protect me."

"It was a lie," Rose said, wiping her nose with the edge of my bedsheet. "I didn't miscarry. Jack survived the impact. He was born via emergency C-section three hours after we arrived at the trauma unit."

"And my baby?" I asked Kevin, stepping directly into his line of sight. "Where is the child I carried for seven months?"

Kevin squeezed his eyes shut. "The placental abruption was too severe, Crystal. By the time they took you into surgery, the baby had suffocated. You were bleeding out on the table. You went into cardiac arrest twice."

"So you lied to me?"

"The doctors warned me that your mental state was too fragile," Kevin insisted, his voice rising in desperation. He reached for my arms, but I stepped back before his skin could graze mine. "They said severe trauma or grief would trigger another hemorrhage! You were barely hanging on! Rose’s baby was in the NICU, fighting for his life, and you kept waking up asking where your boy was!"

"So you just swapped them?" My voice cracked, raw and bleeding. "You handed me another woman's newborn?"

"He's not just another woman's newborn, Crystal!" Rose yelled from the bed, her face contorted with bitter triumph. "Kevin is his father! He was always his father!"

The floor tilted beneath my feet.

"What?"

"We were together before you got pregnant," Rose said, staring at me without blinking. "Months before. We made a mistake one weekend when you were visiting your sister in Chicago. When I found out I was pregnant, we agreed to keep it quiet until Kevin could figure out a way to divorce you. Then you announced your pregnancy two weeks later."

I looked from Rose to Kevin.

My husband of eight years stood in his unbuttoned shirt, staring at the floorboards, refusing to deny a single word.

"You both knew," I whispered.

"Crystal, I never wanted to hurt you," Kevin pleaded, stepping closer. "Jack loves you. You raised him. In every way that counts, you're—"

"Don't finish that sentence," I warned him, the coldness settling deep into my bones.

I glanced past him, out into the hallway.

On the opposite wall hung our eight-by-ten portrait from Jack’s third birthday. We were smiling in front of the lighthouse in Maine. Down the corridor sat Jack’s bedroom—the room I had painted pale blue with my own hands, the tiny bed with the dinosaur sheets I washed every Sunday, the shelf lined with storybooks I read until my throat was scratchy.

Every late night holding him through fevers. Every scraped knee kissed. Every ounce of my devotion over the last five years.

None of it belonged to me.

"So that was the plan?" I asked, looking back at Kevin. "I kept your secret child alive, nursed him, loved him, while you two waited for the right time to take him back?"

"It wasn't like that," Kevin argued. "I wanted us to be a family. Rose was the one pushing—"

"I was his mother!" Rose cut in, swinging her legs over the side of the bed, wrapping the sheet tightly around her torso. "I sacrificed everything so you wouldn't die on that hospital bed! I gave up five years of his life! You should be thanking me, Crystal!"

A sudden, sharp laugh tore from my chest. It grew louder, echoing off the high ceiling until both of them stared at me as if I had lost my mind.

"Thank you?" I said, the laughter dying instantly.

I reached down to my left hand. The platinum band slid easily over my knuckle.

"I'm not his mother," I said, holding the ring up between two fingers. "I was just five years of free childcare."

I dropped the ring. It bounced against Kevin's bare foot and rolled under the edge of the nightstand.

"Crystal, wait! Don't leave!" Kevin lunged forward, grabbing my wrist.

I wrenched my arm away with enough force that he stumbled into the doorframe. "Touch me again, and I swear to God I'll make sure neither of you ever sees the light of day."

I turned on my heel and stepped out into the hallway, heading straight for the stairs.

A small sniffling sound froze me on the landing.

Jack stood halfway up the staircase, his tiny fingers clutching the wooden banister. His oversized preschool backpack hung from one shoulder, and the yellow sun drawing was crumpled in his left fist.

His wide, brown eyes locked onto Rose, who had just stepped into the doorway behind me.

"Mommy Rose..." Jack's voice trembled, small and fragile in the silence. "Is what she said true?"
