My Chef Husband Gave Our Recipes to His Mistress
Chapter 4
I woke up at three in the morning because Damien's phone kept buzzing.
He was asleep next to me. Dead asleep. The kind of sleep that comes after too much wine and too many hours on your feet. He'd come home smelling like the restaurant. Like smoke and wine and that perfume Skyler wore. Something expensive. Something I'd never be able to afford.
I lay there listening to the buzzing. Once. Twice. Three times.
I reached over him carefully. Picked up his iPad from the nightstand. Just to check the time, I told myself. Just to see if I could go back to sleep.
The screen lit up. A message notification.
Skyler Vasquez: *Did you send the revised proposal to the James Beard contact?*
I stared at it.
My thumb moved before I could think. Opened the message thread.
Months of messages. I scrolled up. And up. And up.
My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would wake him.
Skyler, two months ago: *I rewrote the bone broth recipe. Took out all the grandmother stuff. Made it sound more modern. Check the attachment.*
Damien: *Perfect. This is exactly what they want. Heritage but elevated.*
Skyler: *Do you think she'll notice?*
Damien: *She doesn't even know I copied the journal. I did it last year when she was visiting her cousin. Took photos of every page.*
I stopped breathing.
I scrolled further.
Skyler, six weeks ago: *The proposal is almost done. I'm listing us as co-creators. Damien White and Skyler Vasquez. Once the deal is signed, these recipes are legally ours. She can't do anything.*
Damien: *She doesn't even know what she's sitting on. By the time she figures it out, it'll be too late.*
Skyler: *What if she asks about the journal?*
Damien: *She won't. She never asks about anything anymore.*
I scrolled faster. My hands were shaking so hard I almost dropped the iPad.
Attachments. PDFs. I opened one.
It was the proposal. Seventy-three pages. Professional formatting. A cover letter addressed to the James Beard Foundation Heritage Cookbook Initiative.
*Damien White and Skyler Vasquez are pleased to submit this collection of reimagined Pacific Northwest heritage recipes, rooted in traditional techniques but elevated through modern culinary innovation.*
I kept reading.
There was Grandma's bone broth. Rewritten. Clinical. Stripped of every margin note, every story, every piece of her voice. They'd renamed it *Slow-Simmered Chicken Consommé with Ginger and Aromatics.*
There was her braised short rib recipe. The one I'd made for our anniversary. They called it *Wine-Braised Beef with Root Vegetables and Fresh Herbs.*
There was her Dungeness crab technique. The one Damien had been performing for Skyler in the private dining room. They called it *Pacific Northwest Crab Preparation: A Study in Texture and Flavor.*
Every single recipe. Repackaged. Reworded. Stripped clean.
At the bottom of the proposal, a signature line.
*Damien White, Executive Chef*
*Skyler Vasquez, Culinary Director*
No mention of the Carlson family. No mention of Grandma. No mention of the thirty-year-old restaurant. No mention of me.
I scrolled back to the messages.
Skyler, three weeks ago: *The publisher loved it. They want to move forward. Contract should be ready next month.*
Damien: *This is going to change everything.*
Skyler: *We're going to be legends.*
Damien: *We already are.*
I sat there holding the iPad. My vision was blurring. My chest felt like someone was standing on it.
I looked at Damien. He was on his back. Mouth open. Snoring softly.
I thought about waking him up. Screaming. Throwing the iPad at his face. Asking him how he could do this. How he could take the last thing I had left. The last piece of Grandma. The last piece of me.
But I didn't.
I opened my email. Created a new draft. Attached every screenshot. Every PDF. Every message. I forwarded it all to my encrypted account. The one I'd set up last week. The one Damien didn't know about.
It took twenty minutes. My hands were steady. I didn't make a sound.
When I was done, I closed the email. Deleted the draft from his trash. Cleared the browser history. Put the iPad back on the nightstand. Same angle. Same position. Exactly where I'd found it.
I lay back down. Pulled the blanket up to my chin. Stared at the ceiling.
Damien shifted beside me. Mumbled something. Rolled over.
I didn't move.
Something inside me had gone very, very cold. Not sad. Not angry. Just cold.
I thought about Grandma's journal. The inscription on the first page. *Before you learn to cook, learn to be a decent human being.*
I thought about the cracked pot in the kitchen. The wire holding it together.
I thought about the two hundred thousand dollar cooking station.
I thought about Skyler's hand on Damien's. The way he'd smiled. The way he'd peeled the crab for her. Piece by piece. Like a ritual.
I thought about the men at the bar. *Just a housewife with nothing interesting to say.*
I thought about the soup I'd poured down the drain.
I lay there in the dark with my eyes open.
I didn't cry.
I was done crying.
I was done being quiet.
I was done being invisible.
By the time the sun came up, I knew exactly what I was going to do.
