Chapter 1

I went to surprise my boyfriend with my internship offer and found him in the company parking garage, in his car, with a woman.

He stared at me through the window without a flicker of guilt, laughed, and said an intern like me wouldn't last a month. Veyron's CEO would throw me out himself.

Thirty minutes later, I stood in that man's office and heard him say my name like a blade.

---

The email was still open on my phone when I stepped out of the elevator into the garage.

*Congratulations, Clara Dunmore. You have been selected as the Executive Assistant Intern to the CEO at Veyron Holdings.*

Me. Out of four hundred applicants.

Miles worked in marketing on the twelfth floor. He'd told me a hundred times that Veyron was impossible to crack. I wanted to see his face when I showed him.

His silver Audi sat in the back corner, under a flickering light.

And it was shaking.

A woman's laugh floated out, high and breathless. "Miles, someone's going to see."

"Nobody comes down here at lunch, Tessa."

I knew that name. Tessa Lang. Senior account manager. The one he called "the office mom" when I asked why she texted him at midnight.

My legs carried me closer. Fogged glass. A bare shoulder pressed against the passenger window. His hand on her thigh.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

I opened my camera and hit record.

Fifteen seconds. Twenty. Then Miles turned his head, and his eyes found mine through the glass.

He didn't flinch. He just blinked, slowly, like I was a parking attendant who'd interrupted his nap.

I rapped my knuckles on the window. Three hard knocks.

The car went still. A zipper. A rustle of fabric. Then the door swung open and Miles climbed out, tucking in his shirt.

"Seriously, Clara?" He smoothed his hair. "You followed me to work now?"

"Followed you?" A laugh cracked out of me. "I came to tell you good news."

"Great. Then tell me. Without the stalker routine."

Behind him, Tessa yanked her blouse closed and smirked at me over his shoulder. She didn't even bother to look embarrassed.

I held up my phone. "I got everything, Miles. Every second."

His jaw tightened. "Delete it."

"No."

"Clara, don't be dramatic. It's not what—"

"It's exactly what it looks like." My fingers found the thin gold chain at my throat. The necklace he'd given me on our second anniversary. *So you'll always remember who you belong to,* he'd said.

I ripped it off. The clasp snapped against my skin.

Then I tossed it through the open door. It landed in Tessa's lap.

"We're done," I said. "Keep it. It'll look better on her."

For a second, he just stared. Then he laughed. Actually laughed.

"Done? Okay. Sure." He leaned against the car and crossed his arms. "So what's the big news? You finally got a job at a coffee shop?"

I turned the screen toward him. The offer letter.

His smile stalled. Then it came back twice as wide.

"CEO's assistant? Lucian Vale's assistant?" He shook his head. "Oh, sweetheart. You won't last a month."

"Watch me."

"I don't have to." He pushed off the car and stepped close, close enough that I could smell her perfume on his collar. "Vale chews up assistants and spits them out. When he finds out you're a crybaby who can't keep her personal life together, he'll kick you out himself. And I'll make sure he finds out."

Tessa giggled from the passenger seat.

I walked away before my eyes could betray me.

---

The fifty-second floor was all glass and silence.

A woman at the front desk checked my badge and pointed down a long hallway. "He's expecting you. Don't knock twice. He hates that."

I knocked once.

"Come in."

Lucian Vale stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, a folder open in one hand. Black suit. Black tie. Dark hair cut sharp. He didn't turn around.

"Clara Dunmore."

My name sounded cold in his mouth. Clean and final.

"Yes, sir."

"You're four minutes late."

"I— there was a situation in the garage."

He flipped a page. "I didn't ask."

Heat crawled up my neck.

Finally, he faced me. His eyes were gray, flat as winter water. They moved over me once, from my face to my hands, then dropped back to the folder.

"Three things today. The Holloway merger files need cross-checking against last quarter's projections. My schedule for next week needs rebuilding. Two flights moved. And the board summary needs to be on my desk by six." He closed the folder. "Your desk is outside. Questions?"

"No, sir."

"Good."

That was it. I was dismissed.

---

The numbers swam.

I'd read the same line of the Holloway projections four times. My fingers shook over the keyboard, and I kept hitting the wrong keys. Every time I blinked, I saw the fogged window. Tessa's shoulder. Miles laughing.

*You won't last a month.*

I pressed my palms flat against the desk to steady them.

A shadow fell across my screen.

"Your hands are trembling."

I jerked upright. Lucian stood beside my desk, coffee in hand, looking down at me.

"I'm fine."

"You've corrected the same cell eleven times." He nodded at my screen. "I can see your edit history."

My throat closed. I waited for it. The firing. The *this isn't working out*.

Instead, he set his coffee down and spoke very quietly.

"Whatever happened in that garage, leave it outside this office. Private problems stay private."

I looked up at him. My eyes burned, and I knew he could see it.

"I'll finish everything," I said. "All of it. By six."

He studied me for a long beat. His mouth moved, almost like he wanted to say something else.

He didn't. He picked up his coffee and walked away.

---

At 5:41, I placed the board summary on his desk.

He read it standing up. Then he sat down. Then he pulled up the Holloway file on his own monitor and scrolled. And scrolled.

"You found the discrepancy in the March projections."

"The figures didn't match the supplier contracts, so I traced them back."

"Three senior analysts missed that." He glanced up. "My last four interns averaged an eighty-percent accuracy rate during their first week."

I didn't know what to say.

"Yours is a hundred." He said it flatly, like reading a weather report. But his eyes stayed on me a second too long.

I swallowed. "Is that... good?"

Something twitched at the corner of his mouth. Not quite a smile.

"Go home, Miss Dunmore."

"I'll grab the train—"

"It's raining. And you look like you're about to fall over." He picked up his desk phone. "Rafe. Bring the car around. Miss Dunmore needs a ride."

"Mr. Vale, that's really not—"

"It's done."

---

The back seat of his car smelled like leather and cedar. Rafe, the driver, didn't ask a single question. He just handed me a bottle of water and turned on the heat.

I watched rain streak the windows and thought about Lucian's voice. Cold as steel.

Then I thought about the water. The heat. The ride I hadn't asked for.

*Maybe,* I thought, *he isn't as cold as everyone says.*

---

My phone buzzed at 11:52 p.m.

A notification from Veyron's companywide group chat. Six hundred employees.

Miles had posted.

*Funny how some people skip the line. 400 applicants for the CEO's assistant role, and the winner has zero experience. Guess some "qualifications" don't show up on a résumé. 😉*

Forty-three likes. Tessa's was first.

---

The next morning, I stepped off the elevator onto the fifty-second floor.

Conversations stopped.

The woman at the front desk looked me up and down, slow, like she was pricing me.

Two men by the coffee machine leaned in and whispered. One of them laughed.

And then a voice behind me said, quietly enough that only I could hear:

"So. How *did* you get the job, Clara?"
