Chapter 1

It was past midnight when I found the file.

The forty-second floor of Edwards Corp was dark, except for the glow of my monitor. Rain tapped against the glass high above Manhattan. I was running on cold coffee, trying to fix a mess that wasn't mine.

A fifteen-million-dollar partnership with Vanguard Tech had stalled. Braxton’s executive assistant, Noelle Freeman, had pushed the signing back three times. When I checked her archived calendar to see why, the truth stared back at me. She hadn't been reviewing contracts. She had booked a four-day luxury spa retreat in the Berkshires.

I pulled up the corporate expense reports to see if company funds paid for her trip. That was when I saw the attached scanned PDF in the private HR vault.

It wasn't an invoice.

It was a marriage certificate from the New York City Clerk’s office. Dated three months ago.

*Braxton Edwards. Noelle Freeman.*

I stared at his familiar, sweeping signature. My hand rested on the edge of the desk. My fingers were cold, but my chest felt dead quiet.

Eighteen years.

He had paid my college tuition when my mother was sick and we had nothing. He made me feel like I owed him my life. So I gave it to him. I built his empire from scratch, fixed his mistakes, and slept in his bed. Every year, he gave me empty promises about our future.

And three months ago, he slipped a gold band onto his secretary's finger.

I didn't cry. Tears were a luxury, and I had no time to waste.

I reached into my bag and pulled out my black Montblanc fountain pen. It was the only thing I owned that Braxton hadn't bought to keep me quiet. I had bought it with my very first paycheck.

I pulled a clean sheet of Edwards Corp letterhead toward me and began to write.

Over the next forty-eight hours, I moved with absolute precision.

I caught a six o'clock shuttle flight to Boston on Thursday morning. The executives at Miller Global—our biggest account—were furious about Noelle’s endless scheduling delays. I met their board in person, smoothed over the friction, and got their five-year renewal signed before lunch. I refused to let anyone say I left Braxton’s company in ruins. I was leaving it spotless, on my terms.

I landed back in New York at eight that night and went straight to Braxton's Tribeca penthouse.

The closet was filled with designer dresses, diamond tennis bracelets, and rows of pristine shoes. Guilt gifts. Tokens he handed me whenever he stayed out late or belittled my work. I didn't touch any of them.

I pulled out a single black carry-on suitcase. I packed three plain blouses, two pairs of slacks, my personal laptop, and my college degree. It took ten minutes. I left the penthouse key on the kitchen island and walked out into the rain.

On Friday afternoon, I stood in Braxton's corner office.

The view showed the entire city skyline. Braxton sat behind his massive mahogany desk, adjusting the platinum cuff of his custom shirt.

I lined up four items in front of him.

My resignation letter. His black American Express card. The key fob to the Mercedes S-Class. And my company ID badge.

Braxton glanced down, amused. He chuckled, leaning back in his leather chair.

"What is this, Leyla?" he asked, flashing his easy, patronizing smile. "Did Noelle step on your toes again? Take a few days off, sweetheart. You're overtired. Go get a massage."

"I resigned," I said. My voice was calm, almost quiet. "My notice is effective immediately."

His smile flickered, turning sharp. "Don't be dramatic. You aren't going anywhere. Everything you have came from me. You wouldn't last a month out there."

"I moved out of the penthouse last night," I continued, looking right into his eyes. "I took only what I bought myself. The rest belongs to your wife."

Braxton froze. The color drained from his face, leaving him chalky and thin-lipped. His mouth parted, but no sound came out.

I turned on my heel and walked toward the heavy glass doors.

"Leyla!" he barked, his chair screeching back against the floor. "Get back here! Leyla!"

I didn't turn around.

By seven that evening, I was in Brooklyn.

The freight elevator rattled as it opened into Charlee’s loft. Exposed brick, glowing floor lamps, and the smell of takeout filled the room. Charlee stood by the kitchen island. The moment she saw my suitcase and the bottle of red wine in my hand, she dropped her phone and threw her arms around me.

"You did it," she whispered into my hair. Her grip was tight. "You finally walked."

"I'm out," I said.

Charlee pulled back, grinning fiercely. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek and spun her laptop around. "Then it’s time to show the world who actually runs this town."

On the screen was an encrypted spreadsheet titled *The Birkin-to-IPO Conversion Ledger*. Forty-seven entries. Every single Birkin bag, Cartier watch, and diamond necklace Braxton had ever thrown at me, secretly authenticated and liquidated over five years.

It was the seed money that had quietly built Aether.

"The board meeting is set for eight tomorrow morning," Charlee said, her eyes flashing with pure adrenaline. "Our valuation hit two hundred million this morning. The IPO roadshow kicks off in ten days."

I looked out the window toward the glittering Manhattan skyline across the river. The air in my lungs felt crisp, clean, and entirely mine.

For the first time in eighteen years, I exhaled.
