Chapter 3

I didn't go back to the garage.

I took a cab to the hospital. Sat in the back seat and watched the city blur past. Buildings. People. Traffic lights. Everything moved like it always did. Like the world hadn't just cracked open.

When I walked into Margaret's room, I knew.

The monitors sounded different. Faster. Urgent. Two nurses were at her bedside, moving quickly. One was adjusting an IV line. The other was reading numbers off a screen, her voice clipped and professional.

Margaret's eyes were closed. Her skin looked gray.

Dr. Voss appeared in the doorway behind me. Her face was calm but her jaw was tight.

"Ms. Ward. We need to talk."

She led me into the hallway. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead. Somewhere down the hall, someone was crying.

"Your mother's condition has deteriorated significantly in the last few hours," Dr. Voss said. "The tumor is causing increased intracranial pressure. We need to operate now."

"The experimental therapy—"

"The window has closed." Her voice was gentle but final. "I'm sorry. We're out of time."

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Hard.

"What are her chances?" I asked.

Dr. Voss hesitated. Just for a second. That was how I knew.

"Without the targeted therapy, we're working with very limited options. The emergency procedure will relieve the pressure, but the tumor itself—" She stopped. Started again. "We'll do everything we can."

I nodded. I don't know why. My body just kept doing things without asking me first.

"How long?"

"The surgery will take four to six hours. Someone will update you."

She touched my shoulder. Then she was gone.

They wheeled Margaret out twenty minutes later. She was unconscious. I stood in the doorway and watched the gurney disappear down the hall. The wheels squeaked against the linoleum. That was the last sound I heard from her.

The waiting room was beige. Chairs bolted to the floor. Magazines from two years ago. A television mounted in the corner playing the news with no sound.

I sat down in the chair closest to the window.

I didn't call Ryder.

I thought about it. Pulled out my phone. Stared at his name in my contacts. My thumb hovered over it.

Then I saw the car again. The bow. The champagne. Chandler's hand on his arm. *You're literally the best.*

I put the phone away.

The clock on the wall said 2:47.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and watched the second hand move.

3:00.

3:30.

4:00.

A woman across from me was knitting. The needles clicked together in a rhythm that made my teeth hurt. An old man slept in the corner, his mouth open. A young couple sat holding hands, whispering to each other in Spanish.

I kept pressing my thumb down. The skin turned red. Then white. Then raw.

5:00.

6:00.

The light outside the window changed. Golden. Then orange. Then gray.

7:00.

The woman with the knitting needles left. The old man woke up and shuffled out. The young couple was called back by a nurse. They stood up together, still holding hands.

I sat alone.

8:00.

My phone buzzed.

**Ryder:** Hey babe. Crazy day. You good?

I stared at it.

Then I turned the phone face-down on the chair beside me.

The television flickered. Stock market numbers scrolled across the bottom of the screen. A weather map. A commercial for car insurance.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist until I felt the bone.

8:47.

The door to the hallway opened.

Dr. Voss walked in. She wasn't wearing her surgical cap anymore. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail. There were lines around her eyes I hadn't noticed before.

She sat down in the chair next to mine.

She didn't say anything right away. Just sat there. Hands folded in her lap.

That was how I knew.

"Ms. Ward," she said quietly. "I'm so sorry. We did everything we could. But the damage was too extensive. Your mother didn't survive the procedure."

I nodded.

I kept nodding.

Dr. Voss was still talking. I heard words. *Complications. Pressure. Too much time.* Her voice was kind. Professional. She'd done this before. She'd sat in this beige room and said these words to other people in other chairs.

Now she was saying them to me.

"Would you like to see her?" she asked.

I nodded again.

She led me down the hall. The fluorescent lights hummed. My shoes squeaked on the linoleum. We passed rooms with open doors. Machines beeping. Voices murmuring. Life continuing.

Margaret was in a small room at the end of the hall.

She looked like she was sleeping. Her hands were folded on her chest. Someone had smoothed her hair back from her forehead. The monitors were off. The room was quiet.

I sat in the chair beside the bed.

Dr. Voss touched my shoulder again. "Take all the time you need."

Then she left.

I sat there for a long time.

I didn't cry. I thought I would. I thought I'd break apart. But I didn't. I just sat there holding her hand. It was still warm.

I thought about the brownstone. The knife. The promises. The champagne. The red bow on a car that cost exactly what her life was worth.

I thought about Ryder's voice. *I swear on my life.*

I pressed my thumb against my wrist.

Something inside me had been bending for three years. Tonight it finally snapped.

Not loud. Not dramatic.

Just clean. Final. Like a bone breaking in a place you didn't know could break.

I kissed Margaret's forehead. Her skin was cool now.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. "I'm so sorry."

Then I stood up and walked out of the room.

My phone buzzed again in my pocket.

I didn't look at it.

I knew exactly what I was going to do.
