Chapter 1

After ten years together, my boyfriend Daniel Murphy suddenly announced his wedding—in a public post among his friends. The comment section was filled with blessings and well-wishes. Not a single person seemed to care that the bride was a woman in her sixties.

When I saw the news, I drove through the night to get to the wedding venue, only to be blocked at the door—by none other than my boyfriend himself.

“Linda,” he said coldly, “I just want to marry into a wealthy family. Is that really so wrong?”

I stood there in stunned silence for a few seconds before letting out a soft sigh.

“Then tell me… is it possible that the wealthy family you’re referring to is mine?”

——

The moment the words left my mouth, all the guests in the courtyard turned to look at me. A beat of silence—and then the crowd erupted into laughter.

“This woman’s delusional! There are maybe five people in all of Leavenworth who could be called wealthy magnates—and I guarantee she’s not one of them!”

“She really expects us to believe that nonsense? Look at her! That cheap outfit isn’t worth a hundred bucks. What kind of billionaire dresses like that?”

“She must’ve gone mad. Probably scaled the wall to crash the wedding and came up with this ridiculous excuse.”

The murmurs of the crowd grew louder and louder and Daniel’s expression twisted with embarrassment. Wearing a high-end tailored suit, he suddenly pointed at me, completely losing his cool.

“Linda Blair! What’s wrong with you now?”

“This is supposed to be the happiest day of my life and you just had to show up and make a fool out of me in front of everyone, didn’t you?!”

I met his glare with icy eyes, my voice flat and emotionless.

“Daniel, the fact that you’re marrying a woman in her sixties is already a joke in itself.”

“All I did was state a simple fact.”

“I am the wealthy family you’ve been dreaming of marrying into.”

His expression changed in an instant.

“You?” he sneered. “You think you’re some rich heiress? Do yourself a favor—take a look in the mirror. What kind of magnate looks like you?”

He looked me up and down with a face full of disdain, as if the sight of me offended him.

“Linda, even if other people don’t know the truth, I do. You grew up with no parents, lived off an orphanage’s charity to make it through college and now you don’t even have a stable job.”

“I must’ve been out of my mind to date a penniless nobody like you for ten whole years.”

His voice grew more heated with each word, until his entire face flushed red with rage. I raised an eyebrow and gave him a half-smile.

“Daniel, you actually went out of your way to investigate me?”

He scoffed at me, arms crossed and lips curled in disgust.

“Investigate you? What’s there to investigate?”

“I’ve been with you for years and never once met your parents. You never talk about them. Never call them. And every weekend, you sneak off to that orphanage on the east side of the city.”

“Tell me I’m wrong—but all that adds up, doesn’t it?”

As I listened to his self-satisfied ‘analysis,’ I had to fight back a laugh. He wasn’t wrong. Everything he said was technically true—but not in the way he thought. Yes, I didn’t keep in touch with my parents often. That’s because they’ve been running businesses overseas for years, only returning home for New Year. And every year, without fail, Daniel found a different excuse not to come home with me for the holidays—to avoid meeting them.

As for the weekends I spent at the orphanage? That was none of his business. Some things are better left unspoken. Acts of kindness don’t need an audience. I stared at the ignorant man standing in front of me, barely able to keep myself from laughing.

“So,” I said slowly, “you’re marrying a woman older than your own mother… because you think I’m poor?”

Daniel didn’t even try to deny it. Instead, he lifted his chin proudly, arrogance oozing from every word.
