Chapter 1

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist as I stood in the hotel lobby, watching my entire world collapse in a single, glittering moment. The pregnancy test had been positive just three days ago. Three pink lines that had sent me spinning around my apartment, laughing with tears in my eyes. Now, those same three lines felt like a cruel joke as I stared through the open ballroom doors at Dorian—my Dorian—with his arm wrapped around Kali's waist, introducing her as his fiancée to a room full of applauding strangers.

The flight to London had been a blur of anticipation. I'd rehearsed this moment a hundred times on the plane, planning exactly how I'd tell him. 'I'm pregnant,' I would say, my voice barely above a whisper. His eyes would widen, and then he'd laugh—that rich, unguarded laugh I'd fallen in love with—and sweep me into his arms, spinning me around his flat until we were both dizzy with joy. I'd packed the tiny onesie I'd bought on impulse, tucked into the side pocket of my carry-on like a talisman. Pale yellow with a single word printed across the chest: 'Loved.'

The address his assistant had given me led me here—to the Savoy Court, where crystal chandeliers cast fractured rainbows across marble floors and champagne flowed like water. I'd expected his apartment building. Instead, I'd walked into someone else's fairy tale.

Kali looked radiant in a silver gown that caught the light with every movement. Her hand rested possessively on Dorian's chest, her engagement ring—a diamond that could blind you—flashing as she gestured toward the crowd. 'My fiancé and I are so grateful you could join us tonight,' she was saying, her voice carrying across the room with practiced grace. 'The Castillo-Gonzales merger is going to change everything.'

Merger. The word hit me like a physical blow. This wasn't just an engagement party. It was a business transaction, and I was the collateral damage.

Dorian's eyes found mine across the room. For one terrible, suspended moment, I saw everything I needed to know. Panic flashed across his face, followed by guilt so raw it was almost tangible. He knew exactly who I was. He knew why I was here. And in that same heartbeat, he made his choice.

He turned back to Kali, slid his arm tighter around her waist, and smiled for the cameras. 'Kali's right,' he said, his voice smooth and practiced. 'This partnership is going to be extraordinary.'

Partnership. As if what we had been for three years was nothing more than a prelude to this moment. As if I was a stranger he'd never met.

I pressed my thumb harder against my wrist, willing myself to stay upright as the room began to spin. The tiny onesie in my bag suddenly felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. I turned and walked out of the hotel, my heels clicking against marble in a rhythm that matched the breaking of my heart.

Three hours later, a knock on my hotel room door pulled me from a daze of silent tears. I knew who it was before I opened it.

Dorian stood in the hallway, his bow tie loosened, his perfect hair slightly mussed. He looked like he'd run all the way from the party. 'Hadley,' he breathed, reaching for my hands. 'I can explain.'

I let him talk. I let him spin his web of justifications and promises. 'It's just business,' he said, his voice dropping to that intimate register that used to make my knees weak. 'Kali's family has connections we need. But you—you're the one I love. You're the one who matters.'

His eyes held mine a fraction too long, and I remembered all the times I'd noticed that tell before but had chosen to ignore it. He was lying. He'd always been lying.

'Stay,' he whispered, his fingers tracing patterns on my palm. 'Stay in London. Not as my fiancée—not publicly. But as... more. As the woman who knows the real me.'

I looked at him—really looked at him—and saw him clearly for the first time. The man I'd loved for three years was offering me a place in the shadows while Kali stood in the light.

'No,' I said, my voice steady and soft. 'We're done.'

I closed the door on his face and leaned against it, one hand pressed flat against my stomach, feeling the weight of a future I would now face entirely alone.
