Chapter 2

I woke up wrong.

Not the slow crawl out of sleep I was used to, but a sudden snap into consciousness, like someone had pulled a plug. My head felt stuffed with cotton. My mouth tasted like metal and dust.

The ceiling was mine. The walls were mine. But something was off.

I turned my head. A man was in my bed.

He was shirtless, face-down in the pillow beside me, one arm flung across the sheets. Dark hair. Tattoo on his shoulder blade. I didn't know him. I'd never seen him before in my life.

My stomach dropped.

I sat up slowly. My hands were shaking. The room tilted a little, then steadied. I looked down. My clothes were still on. Wrinkled, but on. That meant something. I didn't know what yet, but it meant something.

The bedroom door opened.

Desmond stood there, phone in hand, screen facing me. Recording.

"Wren," he said, voice soft, wounded. "What the hell is this?"

Behind him, Nyra leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, mouth twitching at the corners like she was trying not to smile.

Seven times.

This was the seventh time.

Something in me went very, very still.

I looked at Desmond. At his phone. At the stranger in my bed. At Nyra's barely hidden grin.

And I felt nothing.

No panic. No shame. No scramble to explain.

Just cold, clear certainty.

"For the record," I said, voice steady, "this is the seventh time."

Desmond blinked. "What?"

I reached under my pillow. Pulled out my phone. Held it up so he could see the red recording dot blinking in the corner.

"The seventh time you've drugged me," I said. "The seventh time you've staged this. The seventh time you've walked in here with your phone out like you caught me doing something I chose."

Nyra's smile dropped.

Desmond's face went white. "Wren, what are you—"

I tapped my screen. Audio filled the room.

Desmond's voice, muffled but clear: *"She'll be out by ten. I'll bring him in through the side door. Make sure you're here by six so we can get it on video before she wakes up."*

Nyra's laugh, bright and sharp: *"God, this is going to be perfect. She's going to lose it."*

I let it play for ten seconds. Then I stopped it.

The silence was so thick I could taste it.

"Get him out of my bed," I said.

Desmond didn't move. His mouth opened, closed. He looked at Nyra. She stared at me like I'd just pulled a knife.

"Wren," Desmond started, stepping forward. "Let's just—"

"Get. Him. Out."

I stood. My legs were steadier than I expected. I walked past Desmond, past Nyra, into the bathroom. Locked the door.

Desmond pounded on it immediately. "Wren! Open the door. Delete that. Delete it right now."

I turned on the tap. Let the water run loud and steady.

He kept pounding. Kept shouting.

I sat on the edge of the tub, stared at the tile, and felt the last thread of something inside me snap clean in half.

---

Two days later, Desmond tried a different tactic.

He called me in the afternoon, voice warm and careful. "Let me take you to dinner tonight. Please. We need to talk."

I almost said no. But I wanted to see it. Wanted to watch him try.

"Okay," I said.

He picked a place in Tribeca. White tablecloths. Soft lighting. The kind of restaurant where the waiters moved like ghosts and the menu had no prices.

Desmond was already seated when I arrived. He stood, pulled out my chair, kissed my temple. His cologne was the same as always. Expensive. Familiar.

He ordered for me without asking. Seared scallops. A glass of Sancerre. The same thing he always ordered for me, because he'd decided once that I liked it, and that was that.

He reached across the table. Took my hand.

"You look beautiful," he said.

It didn't sound like a compliment. It sounded like an instruction.

I looked at his hand on mine. Smooth skin. Manicured nails. The same hand that had held a lighter to Grandma Millie's quilt.

"Thank you," I said.

He smiled. Relieved. Like I'd just given him permission to believe everything was fine.

"I know things have been hard," he said. "With your grandmother. With everything. I haven't been there the way I should've been."

A pause. Perfectly timed.

"I'm sorry," he added.

I watched his face. The slight crease between his brows. The soft tilt of his head. The way his thumb brushed over my knuckles.

It was a performance. Every word, every gesture, every breath.

And I'd seen it before. So many times.

"It's okay," I said.

His smile widened. "I knew you'd understand. You always do."

The food came. He talked about work. About a deal closing. About Nyra's new therapist, how much it was helping her, how grateful he was that I was so patient with her.

I cut my scallops into small, even pieces. Chewed slowly. Nodded at the right moments.

And I catalogued everything.

The way he touched my hand but never really looked at me.

The way his apology had no specifics, no weight, no cost.

The way he said *I knew you'd understand* like my forgiveness was a foregone conclusion, a box he could check.

The way he ordered my food, my wine, my life, and called it love.

I set down my fork.

"Desmond," I said.

He looked up, still smiling.

"I'm done."

The smile faltered. Just a flicker. "Done with what?"

"With this," I said. "With you."

His hand tightened on mine. Not gentle anymore. "Wren. Don't do this here."

"I'm breaking up with you."

His face went very still. Then he laughed. Soft. Disbelieving.

"No," he said. "You're not."

I pulled my hand back. Stood.

"Yes," I said. "I am."

And I walked out of the restaurant, leaving him there, alone at the table, with two untouched plates of food and a glass of wine he'd ordered for someone who was never coming back.
