Chapter 1

Ivy’s POV

The divorce papers were already signed. All I had left to do was leave before Raphael came home to find out.

By sunset, I would no longer be Raphael Langford’s wife. The thought should have broken me. Instead, I forced a smile as our six-month-old son bounced in his great-grandmother Margaret’s arms, reaching for the photograph of his father on the mantel.

“Dada!”

The word cracked through the nursery like a shot. Margaret gasped. Raphael’s mother, Emily, burst into delighted laughter.

“Oh my goodness… did you hear that? He said Dada!”

Margaret hugged the baby close, laughing through happy tears. “Say it again, my precious boy!”

He kicked his tiny feet. “Dada!”

Everyone celebrated. I lowered my head so no one would see the tears gathering in my eyes. Raphael had waited six months to hear that word. That morning, before leaving for work, he’d kissed our son’s forehead and promised, “I’ll be back before dinner today.”

Work always came first… meetings, dinners, international calls. But that morning had been different. He’d looked at me like there was something he wanted to say, then just smiled instead. “Wait for me.”

My chest tightened, because I wasn’t going to be here when he came home.

“Ivy?” Emily’s voice pulled me back. “You look pale.”

“I’m just tired,” I lied.

Margaret frowned. “You’ve been on your feet all morning. Go rest while he sleeps.”

She placed the baby in my arms. He yawned, his fingers curling around mine… Raphael’s eyes staring up out of that small face, the same dark eyes that intimidated CEOs and had somehow, over two years, become my favorite place to disappear into.

“Come on,” I whispered. “Let’s get you to bed.”

Upstairs, I laid him in his crib and smoothed his soft hair. “I’m sorry,” I whispered.

He smiled and reached for me, and that small movement nearly undid everything. I kissed his forehead again and again until my tears landed on the blanket.

“I love you more than you’ll ever know. I hope one day you’ll understand…”

My voice gave out. One day he might grow up believing his mother had abandoned him. That thought alone was unbearable.

A knock. Anna, one of the housemaids.

“Mrs. Margaret asked if the young master is asleep.”

“He is.”

“I’ll sit with him.”

“Thank you.” I made myself walk out of the room before I changed my mind.

The hallway felt longer than it ever had… past the piano Raphael never played, the shelf where Margaret hid sweets for the staff, the family portrait taken only two months ago. In it, Raphael stood behind me, one hand on my shoulder, our son in my arms. Anyone would have believed we were happy.

Maybe, for a little while, we had been.

I touched the frame. “I’m sorry.” Not to Raphael… to the woman in the photograph who had let herself believe she belonged here.

In our bedroom, his suit jacket still hung over the armchair where he’d left it that morning. His watch sat on the nightstand. His cologne hung in the air like he’d only just stepped out. I knelt at the wardrobe and pulled out the same battered brown suitcase I’d carried into this house two years ago. It had held everything I owned then. It would hold everything again.

I packed only what was mine before Raphael Langford: plain blouses, faded jeans, the cream cardigan my mother bought me before she got sick. I left the designer dresses, the jewelry, the shoes that cost more than my mother’s medical bills. None of it had ever really been mine to keep.

My phone buzzed.

LANGFORD GROUP: Your resignation has been approved.

I stared at the screen. Two years of walking into that building as Ivy Lawson, quiet office assistant in Operations — greeting my own husband with “Good morning, Mr. Langford” in the elevator, then riding home beside him in silence like strangers who happened to share an address. Nobody in that building had ever known the truth.

Another notification. The Operations group chat… fifty-six unread messages.

We’ll miss you, Ivy! Don’t forget to visit!

A short, sad laugh escaped me. I typed one line back… Thank you for everything, working with all of you has been one of the happiest parts of my life… sent it, left the group, and powered off the phone.

I opened the nightstand drawer and took out the brown envelope that would erase the last two years of my life.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT. Signed by Ivy Lawson.

Our marriage had always had an expiration date. Two years as Raphael’s wife, one heir delivered, a settlement, and I would disappear… that had been the deal from the very first day, spelled out in a contract I’d been foolish enough to think love might eventually rewrite.

I slid the papers back into the envelope and looked down at my wedding ring. There had been no grand wedding… just a small ceremony, family only, a plain platinum band Raphael had chosen himself. I remembered asking him once why he hadn’t bought something more expensive.

“A ring isn’t meant to impress people. It’s meant to stay on your finger.”

Those words used to make my pulse race. Now they only made leaving harder. I slipped the ring off and set it on top of the envelope, then picked up my suitcase. The mansion was silent… the perfect time to go.

Raphael’s study sat just off the hallway. I stepped inside long enough to leave the envelope on his desk, the ring catching the afternoon light.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered, and turned to leave… then froze at the sound of voices just outside the door, which hadn’t quite clicked shut.

“…you’ve waited long enough, Sophia.”

My feet stopped moving.

“Yes, Uncle,” Sophia said softly. “That’s why I came today. I’ve been patient. I’ve done everything you asked. When will Raphael finally divorce that woman?”

Richard, Raphael’s father, chuckled. “Soon, my dear. I’ll remind him myself today. You won’t have to wait much longer.”

My fingers tightened around the suitcase handle until it hurt.

“He’ll keep his word,” Richard went on. “My mother forced him into that ridiculous marriage to save face, nothing more. Soon everything goes back to how it should have been.”

Sophia laughed, low and satisfied. “I never doubted him. He only married her because he had no choice.”

“Don’t worry about Ivy,” Richard said. “You’ll be Mrs. Langford soon enough.”

Something inside me went very quiet and very still. Not shock… confirmation. Every fear I’d spent two years trying to talk myself out of, said out loud, in his father’s voice, like a business update.

For months I had let myself believe Raphael’s kindness meant something… the tea he made when I couldn’t sleep, his hand finding mine in the waiting room before every doctor’s appointment, the way he held our son when he thought no one was watching. Maybe none of it had meant anything at all. Maybe he had simply been honoring a contract, the way he honored every contract.

I didn’t wait to hear more. I pulled the suitcase down the back stairs and out through the service entrance. No one saw me go. No one called my name.

The iron gates swung open, and I stepped through them without looking back. Two years of my life were behind that gate. If I turned around now, I knew exactly what would happen… I would run straight back into Raphael’s arms.

And this time, I might never find the strength to leave again.
