Chapter 1

I walked back into Westbridge Atelier wearing white silk and three years of silence.

Grant Mercer called me unforgettable before he recognized my face.

Three years ago, he had kissed Tessa Lane in the supply room.

Today, he dropped to one knee beside the executive elevator.

He begged me to take him back while his billionaire owner watched.

Then Kieran Voss offered me the position Grant had stolen from me.

---

The glass doors slid open, and the lobby went quiet.

Two women at the reception desk stopped mid-sentence. I knew them both. Marisa from accounts. Jen from design support. Three years ago, Jen had left a diet shake on my desk with a sticky note that read *Thought you could use this!*

Now she was smoothing her hair.

"Good morning," she said brightly. "Are you here for onboarding? HR is on four."

"I'm not here for HR."

"Oh. Then, um, who's your appointment with?"

I didn't answer. My white suit had cost more than her monthly rent, and it fit me like it had been cut around my bones. The jacket had no buttons. It didn't need any.

Marisa leaned toward Jen and whispered loud enough to carry. "Is she a model? For the fall campaign?"

"Nobody told me about a shoot."

Neither of them knew my face. Three years ago they had known every inch of it. They used to call it the moon behind my back.

I kept walking.

"Well, hello."

The voice came from my left. Warm, lazy, and practiced. I had heard it whisper in my ear a hundred times.

Grant Mercer stepped into my path with a coffee cup in one hand. Navy suit. Silver watch. The same easy smile he gave clients right before he lied to them.

"I'd remember you if we'd met," he said. "Trust me. You're unforgettable."

"Am I?"

"Absolutely." He tilted his head, eyes sliding down my jacket and back up. "Grant Mercer. Brand Director. If you're new, I'd be happy to show you around. Personally."

Behind him, Jen giggled.

I let the moment stretch until his smile started to strain.

"You don't need to show me around, Grant," I said. "I wrote half the floor plan for the creative wing."

His smile froze in place.

"Sorry?"

"Audra," I said. "Audra Kemp. Third desk from the window. The one you used to borrow pens from."

The coffee cup tipped in his hand. A brown splash hit the marble.

"Audra?" His voice cracked on the second syllable. "No. No way. You're—"

"Thinner?"

"I was going to say different."

"You were going to say thinner."

Someone near the reception desk dropped a stapler.

Then I watched his face change, the way I'd seen it change in a hundred boardrooms. The shock drained out. Something hungry slid in to replace it.

"God, Audra." He set the cup down and reached for my elbow. "You look incredible. I mean it. Where have you been? I tried calling you, you know. After everything."

"You didn't."

"I did. Once or twice." He laughed, soft and low. "Come on. We were good together. You remember."

I remembered.

---

Three years ago, I took prednisone every morning with a glass of orange juice.

My doctor said the weight was temporary. My face swelled until my eyes looked small. My knees ached so badly I kept a heating pad under my desk. I worked until midnight anyway, building the Halden Brand Proposal from nothing. Ninety-two slides. Six weeks of my life.

I gave Grant a copy the night before the board meeting.

"Just look it over," I said. "Tell me if the color story works."

"Babe, it's perfect. Get some sleep."

The next morning, he stood at the front of the conference room and clicked through my slides.

"This concept came to me on a run," he told the board. "I wanted Westbridge to feel like a promise."

That was my line. I had written it at two in the morning with ice on my wrist.

Nobody looked at me. I was the heavy girl in the corner taking notes.

Two weeks later, I went to the supply room for printer paper.

Tessa Lane, our junior account manager, had her back against the shelves. Grant had his mouth on her neck. Her lipstick was on his collar.

I didn't scream. I just stood there, holding the door.

That night, I cried in our kitchen until I could barely speak.

"Explain it to me," I begged. "Just explain."

Grant leaned against the counter and checked his phone.

"Look at yourself, Audra. You're hysterical."

"You kissed her!"

"And you're shouting." He finally lifted his eyes, and they were flat. "Honestly? You've gotten harder and harder to want. I'm only human."

I left Westbridge the next week. Nobody asked why.

---

"Audra?"

Grant's hand was still on my elbow. I pulled my arm free.

"Don't touch me."

"Okay. Okay, fair." He held his palms up and followed me toward the executive elevator. "Listen. I was an idiot back then. I was under so much pressure. Tessa meant nothing. That ended months ago."

"I don't care about Tessa."

"Then let me fix it. Dinner. Tonight. We'll talk like adults."

"No."

The elevator light blinked on the twelfth floor. Coming down.

Grant glanced at the small crowd gathering by the reception desk. Then he did something I didn't expect.

He knelt.

Right there on the marble, beside the brass elevator doors, one knee down like he was proposing.

Jen gasped. Somebody raised a phone.

"Audra." His voice went thick. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all of it. Give me another chance. One. That's all I'm asking."

For three years I had imagined this exact scene. In my imagination, I cried.

Instead, I laughed. Short and quiet, almost a cough.

Then I stepped back.

Grant's hand reached for mine and closed on empty air. He wobbled, caught himself on the wall, and stayed there, stuck halfway between kneeling and falling.

The elevator chimed.

The doors opened, and every person in the lobby straightened at once.

Kieran Voss stepped out. Tall, dark suit, no tie. The man who had bought Westbridge Atelier eight months ago in a deal the papers called a quiet takeover. He looked at Grant on the floor. Then he looked at me.

"Mr. Mercer," he said evenly. "Are you hurt?"

Grant scrambled up, brushing off his knee. "Mr. Voss. No, sir. I was just— this is an old colleague. Audra Kemp. She used to work here."

"I know who she is." Kieran turned to the room. His voice wasn't loud, but it reached every corner. "Ms. Kemp is our new Executive Director of Brand Strategy. I hired her personally. She'll be leading the restructuring of Westbridge Atelier, effective today."

Silence. Then Marisa whispered, "Oh my God."

Grant's face went gray. "Restructuring?"

"Every senior role will be reviewed." Kieran glanced at him. "Yours included. Your position will be under Ms. Kemp's strategic evaluation."

"Under *her*?"

"Is that a problem, Mr. Mercer?"

Grant's jaw worked. Nothing came out.

Kieran held the elevator door open for me. "Ms. Kemp. After you."

I walked past Grant without looking at him. The doors closed on his face.

For two floors, neither of us spoke. Then Kieran pressed the stop button. The elevator shuddered and went still.

"You enjoyed that," he said.

"A little."

"Good." He turned toward me, and his voice dropped. "Audra, every piece of credit you lost in this building, I'm going to let you take back with your own hands."

"Why?"

He held my eyes for a long moment, then pulled a thin gray folder from inside his jacket.

"Because the Halden Proposal was only the first thing he stole from you," he said. "Open it."
