Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I know because I was staring at the clock above the pack house door when Landon's jacket hit me like a fist. Woodsmoke. His usual scent. And underneath it, soaked so deep it had to come from hours of skin-to-skin contact: sharp cedar and amber.

Alpha Daphne Russell.

I'd smelled it before on War Games broadcasts. Every wolf in six packs knew that scent. It clung to Landon's jacket now like a claim, like ownership, like he'd rolled in it deliberately and wanted me to know.

My wolf slammed against the inside of my ribs. One furious pulse. Then nothing. Just the cold.

I stood in the doorway and made myself breathe it in. All of it. The truth I'd been swallowing for weeks rearranged itself into a shape I should have recognized years ago.

I did not move. I counted to ten. Then I turned and walked to the bathroom.

The pregnancy test sat in my jacket pocket where I'd carried it for two weeks, too afraid to use it. My hands shook as I tore the wrapper. I set it on the sink edge and waited.

Two minutes felt like drowning.

Positive.

I pressed my palm flat against my stomach. For one breath, I let myself feel it. The child was real. The only real thing left.

Then I wrapped the test in tissue, buried it at the bottom of the waste bin, and went still.

I would not tell him. Not yet. Not until I understood what I was walking into.

Landon came home that evening reeking of her. He walked into our quarters like a man who'd already won something, jacket slung over one shoulder, boots loud on the floor.

I was sitting at the table with the resource ledger open in front of me. The shared stores we'd pooled over seven years—herbs, medical supplies, the emergency fund I'd scavenged and saved—were gone. Transferred. Every line item zeroed out.

"Where did the stores go?" I asked. My voice came out measured. Quiet.

Landon glanced at the ledger, then at me. His expression flickered—surprise, then something colder. Contempt.

"Reallocated," he said. "Strategically."

"Reallocated where?"

He sighed like I was a child asking why the sky was blue. "Thornveil. We're building an alliance. The pack council approved it."

"I built those stores," I said. "I mapped the herb routes. I negotiated the emergency fund with the healer—"

"You did Omega work," Landon cut in. His tone was so casual it took me a moment to register the words. "Busywork. The council needed those resources for something that actually mattered."

I stared at him. "The formations—"

"The formations?" He laughed. Short and sharp. "Isabelle, you drew some patrol maps. That's not strategy. That's not leadership."

My wolf snarled inside me, clawing, but I kept my face blank.

"I'm a rankless she-wolf," I said slowly. "Is that what you're reminding me?"

Landon's jaw tightened. "I'm reminding you that you don't have standing to question a Beta." He turned toward the door. "I have a banquet to attend. Don't wait up."

He left. The door clicked shut behind him.

I sat at the table with the empty ledger in front of me and let the last seven years rearrange themselves.

Peyton found me an hour later at the edge of the banquet hall. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the herb shed before I could protest.

"You need to see this," he said. His face was tight, his Gamma aura crackling with barely contained rage.

He spread documents across the workbench. Archive records. Submission forms. My handwriting. My tactical logic. My formations.

Submitted under Landon West and Daphne Russell's joint names.

Championship victory. Inter-Pack War Games.

"I used my clearance," Peyton said quietly. "Pulled the originals from the archive. It's all here. Your work. Their names."

I stared at the pages. My fingers traced the ink.

Peyton laid down one more document. A photograph. Landon and Daphne shoulder to shoulder, holding the trophy between them. Daphne's head tilted back, laughing. And on her collarbone, just visible above the neckline of her dress—

A half-formed mate-mark.

"You need to take this to the pack council," Peyton said. "Tonight."

I looked at him. "The council answers to the Beta when the Alpha is away. And the Alpha is away."

Peyton's jaw worked. "Then—"

"I need one more day," I said.

I folded the documents carefully and slid them into my jacket. My fingers brushed the cold mark on my neck. It felt fainter than it should. Like something was already draining out of it.

Peyton caught my wrist. "Isabelle—"

"One more day," I repeated.

The next evening, Landon walked into the Harvest Banquet carrying the War Games championship trophy.

It gleamed under the hall lights, engraved with his name and Daphne's. The pack erupted. Wolves I'd worked beside for seven years—wolves whose patrols I'd mapped, whose routes I'd secured—cheered and toasted and clapped Landon on the back.

I stood at the hall's edge and watched.

Something inside me went very quiet. Very certain.

I stepped forward into the center of the hall.

The noise didn't stop right away. It took a moment for wolves to notice me. A rankless she-wolf, walking toward the Beta in the middle of his celebration.

I pulled the archive records from my jacket and held them up.

"Landon," I said. My voice carried. Clear and cold. "Can you explain why my formation manuscripts appear under your name and Alpha Russell's in the War Games archive?"

The hall went silent.

Landon's face cycled through shock, fury, and something else. Something calculated.

Then he straightened. Looked past me like I was furniture.

And spoke.

"I, Landon West, Beta of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Isabelle Maren, as my mate and bond."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

My knees buckled.

I dropped to the floor, one knee slamming into stone, and every wolf in the room felt it—the bond shattering, a crack in the spiritual fabric like a bone breaking in the dark.

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move.

And then something inside me—something I'd kept caged for seven years—woke up.
