Chapter 4

Samuel gently reassured her.

“Of course, I’ll take care of it. Once you give birth and get the baby registered, I’ll divorce her and get our marriage certificate. As soon as we’re legally married, I’ll start transferring all her assets to you and the child. With the money in our hands, what else is there to worry about?”

A smug smile crept across Starla’s face as she listened.

“I can hardly wait to see that lowlife Cassey left with nothing.”

I watched them on the surveillance feed, my fists clenched tight. I never imagined the two people I trusted most could betray me so thoroughly.

I would make sure that this scumbag pair pays the price they deserve.

I saved all the video recordings, then headed out the door.

I arrived at a luxurious villa and rang the doorbell.

Samuel hadn’t come home all night; he spent the whole night with Starla.

When he finally returned, I was just about to leave.

Holding breakfast in his hand, Samuel blocked me at the door.

“Cass, I was wrong yesterday. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. I was just worried about Starla being pregnant—if something happened to her in our home, we’d be responsible.”

I glanced at Samuel.

“Afraid of responsibility, so you stayed with her all night?”

"It's not what you think. She started having complications and I was afraid something would go wrong, so I stayed with her all night. Besides, Starla is your best friend—if you don’t believe me, you should at least believe her!" Samuel took my hand, trying to win me over, but suddenly noticed my ID and household registration booklet on the bench by the entrance and asked curiously, "Cass, why are you taking your ID?"

I slipped the documents into my bag and replied indifferently, "The house in my hometown is about to be demolished. They're working on the compensation, so I need these to register.”

"Demolished?" Samuel’s eyes lit up at the word.

"Is the compensation distributed per person? How much can each person get?"

“Of course it’s divided per person. But since it’s just the three of us in my family, each person will get around one and a half million dollars. Too bad we haven’t gotten our marriage license yet, or you’d count as one of us.” I sighed, feigning regret.

The instant Samuel realized each person could get one and a half million dollars, he couldn’t keep his cool.

“Why didn’t you tell me about any of this before? If I’d known, we could have just gone and gotten the marriage license already!” Samuel said eagerly.

“Weren’t you the one who said getting the license on our anniversary would make it more meaningful?” I replied coolly, my tone flat.

Samuel quickly grabbed my hand.

“Cass, I just wanted to make it a memorable moment for you, you know? But a marriage license can be done anytime, while an opportunity like this demolition compensation won’t come around again.” The implication was clear: he wanted to rush the marriage and get his name added to my household registration.

Without hesitation, I nodded. “Fine, pick a date and we’ll go register.”

Hearing my agreement, Samuel visibly relaxed, a satisfied smile spreading across his face.

“What? You want a divorce? We just got married!” I watched in the surveillance video as Starla, red-faced and furious, screamed at Samuel.

“It’s just temporary. I’ll get the demolition payout, divorce her immediately and then marry you. How does that sound?”

Samuel soothed her in a gentle tone.

“I don’t agree to this! Who knows if you’re just trying to manipulate me? And besides, even if you marry her, can you actually guarantee that you get a divorce that quickly? What will happen to me and the baby?” Starla clutched her belly, glaring at him angrily.

But Samuel’s patience started to wear thin as he kept thinking about the one and a half million dollars.

“One and a half million dollars is enough to save us years of hard work, enough to give you and the baby a better life.”

Hearing this, Starla began to waver. She and Samuel were both from rural backgrounds and that sum of money was life-changing.

That very day, Samuel and Starla went together to the civil affairs bureau.

Samuel was sweet-talking her in a soothing tone.

As he and Starla stepped out of the civil affairs bureau, I leaned against a Ferrari parked by the curb, watching them and calling out with a smile, “What a coincidence, you two!”

Samuel quickly stuffed his divorce application papers into his bag, a flash of panic crossing his face as he looked at me.

“Cass, what are you doing here?”

With a month left in the cooling-off period before the divorce could be finalized, he clearly felt guilty.

I lifted the document folder in my hand and pointed toward the nearby land bureau. “Demolition requires proof of assets, so I came over to get a property certificate.”

Samuel breathed a sigh of relief at that, just about to pat his chest in reassurance when my gaze sharpened. I looked at him and Starla, my tone turning cold.

“However… since you both showed up at the civil affairs bureau together, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
