Chapter 1

Nicholas came over on a Tuesday. It was raining hard on the Upper East Side. The streetlights outside my window looked like wet smears. I had soup on the stove. I had just come back from visiting Mom at the hospital, and my coat was still damp on the hook.

He didn't take his shoes off. That was the first thing I noticed.

"We need to talk," he said.

I turned off the burner. "Okay."

He stood by the counter. He didn't sit. Nicholas Coleman. Four years together. He used to fall asleep on my couch with his socks on. Now he looked at the fridge, the window, anywhere but me.

"Things have changed, Mara."

"What things?"

"Just... things. We've grown apart."

"When?" I asked. "Last week you said you loved me."

He rubbed the back of his neck. "You've been busy. With your mom and everything."

"So it's my mom's fault."

"I didn't say that." His voice got sharp. Then soft again. "I just think this is best. For both of us."

"Is there someone else?"

He paused. Only for a second. "No. It's not about anyone else."

He took his keys from the bowl by the door. He left my spare key on the counter. He didn't take his toothbrush. He didn't take the gray hoodie in my closet. Fifteen minutes. That was how long it took to end four years.

The door clicked shut. He didn't look back.

I sat at the kitchen table. The soup went cold. Rain kept tapping the glass. I stared at the door until the hallway light outside went dark on its timer.

---

Three days later, I walked to the pharmacy for Mom's refill. Two blocks from my building, there's a coffee shop with big front windows. I've been there a hundred times. Mostly with Elyse.

I saw them first. They never saw me.

Nicholas sat in the corner booth. Elyse Morrison sat across from him in a cream blazer. Her blonde hair was pinned up, the way she wore it for brunch photos. She laughed at something he said. Head tilted back. Then his hand slid over hers on the table. Easy. Familiar. Not the first time.

Something cold dropped into my stomach.

Elyse stopped calling me in March. She said work was crazy. Nicholas started working late in March too. The weekend he was supposedly at his brother's place in Boston, Elyse posted a sunset from somewhere she didn't tag.

March. Months. Not days.

I didn't go in. I stood on the sidewalk with the pharmacy bag in my hand. A cab honked. A man bumped my shoulder and muttered sorry. I counted sixty seconds in my head. My breath fogged in the cold air.

Then I walked home.

I didn't cry. I took out my leather notebook, the brown one Mom gave me when I graduated. I opened to a clean page. I wrote the date. I wrote March. Then I wrote down everything I remembered.

---

Elyse called the next Wednesday.

"Mara. Oh my God. I've been dying to talk to you." Her voice cracked right on cue. "I never meant for this to happen. I swear. He came to me. He said you two were basically over."

"Did he," I said.

"I feel terrible. Truly. You're my best friend." She sniffed. Then, fast, like flipping a page: "But honestly, sweetie? You can't sit in that apartment and rot. You need to move forward."

"Forward."

"There's someone I want you to meet. Drake Kennedy. You know, Kennedy Properties? Half of Park Avenue?" She laughed lightly. "He's charming. So successful. And he's recently single. I already told him all about you."

Recently single. She said it like a gift.

"Why would you do that for me?" I asked.

A tiny pause. "Because I love you. Because I want you happy. Isn't that what friends do?"

Every word was polished. Like she'd practiced it in the mirror.

"Thank you, Elyse," I said quietly. "Okay. Set it up."

"Really?" Too bright. Too fast. "Oh, you won't regret it."

---

That night I made tea and didn't drink it. I opened my laptop at the kitchen table, in the same chair where I watched Nicholas leave.

I typed his name. Drake Kennedy.

The first page was easy. Charity galas. A yacht in the Hamptons. A square jaw and a smile that didn't reach his eyes. Then I went deeper. Court records. Legal databases I could still access from work. Old society pages from ten years back.

By midnight I had three restraining orders. Three different women. One wrote that he pinned her against a wall by her throat. Two police reports, both closed, no charges. And a sealed settlement from 2019. Sealed things cost money. A lot of money.

I read each document twice. Slowly.

My hands didn't shake. That surprised me.

Elyse knew. Of course she knew. Elyse researched everything. Restaurants. Handbags. Men. She didn't pick Drake by accident. She picked him the way you pick a knife.

I closed the laptop. The fridge hummed. Somewhere down on Lexington, a siren rose and faded.

I opened my notebook and wrote one line.

He's the weapon she wants to use on me. I'll turn it around.
