Chapter 4

The finance dinner was at the University Club. Old money, old wood, old rules. My father had asked me to come—something about a West Coast investor he wanted me to meet. I almost said no. But staying home meant staring at my phone, waiting for Blake's next call, his next excuse. So I went.

The dining room smelled like cigar smoke and leather. Men in dark suits stood in clusters, talking about markets and mergers. I knew most of them. They knew me. A few nodded as I passed. One asked about Blake. I smiled and said he was traveling.

My father stood by the bar with a man I didn't recognize. Tall. Dark suit, no tie. He held a glass of whiskey but hadn't drunk from it. When my father saw me, he waved me over.

"Emerie, this is Morgan Hoffman. San Francisco. Tech and finance."

Morgan extended his hand. His grip was firm, brief, and he let go the moment it was polite to. "Ms. Hawkins. Your father speaks highly of you."

"He's biased," I said.

Morgan's mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "Fortunate bias, then."

His voice was low, unhurried. He didn't fill silence the way most people did. My father excused himself to greet someone across the room, and Morgan and I were left standing by the bar.

"You're not from New York," I said.

"No. But I'm here often enough."

"Business?"

"Mostly." He set his glass down and aligned it precisely with the edge of the napkin beneath it. "Sometimes other things."

I watched his hand. The way he adjusted the glass without thinking. A small, deliberate movement.

"Do you always do that?" I asked.

"Do what?"

"Straighten things."

He looked at the glass, then at me. Something shifted in his expression. Not embarrassment. Recognition. "Yes," he said. "I suppose I do."

We talked for twenty minutes. He asked about my work with the Hawkins Foundation. I asked about San Francisco. He didn't mention Blake. He didn't ask if I was engaged. When the dinner was called, he nodded once and walked toward his table.

I didn't see him again that night.

But two days later, Diana called.

"I just received a package," she said. Her voice was tight with something I couldn't name. "Anonymous. Courier delivery. No return address."

"What kind of package?"

"Photographs. Receipts. Hotel records. Blake and Jenna. London, Montauk, Verbier. Everything."

I sat down slowly. "Who sent it?"

"I don't know. But whoever it was, they're very thorough. And very careful."

I thought about Morgan's hand on the whiskey glass. The precise alignment.

"Keep it," I said. "All of it."

The gallery opening was Sophie's idea. A new contemporary artist, someone she'd been following for years. The space was in Chelsea, all white walls and track lighting. I went because staying home felt like surrender.

Morgan was there.

He stood in front of a large canvas, hands in his pockets, studying the brushwork. He didn't look surprised when I approached.

"Ms. Hawkins."

"Mr. Hoffman."

"You ride," he said.

I blinked. "Excuse me?"

"Equestrian. Your foundation sponsors a training program in Connecticut. I read about it."

"You did your homework."

"I'm thorough." He turned back to the painting. "Do you still ride yourself?"

"When I have time."

"You should make time. It's good to have something that's just yours."

I looked at him. Really looked. He wasn't performing. He wasn't trying to charm me or impress me. He was just talking. Like I was a person, not a condition. Not a headline.

"Your French is excellent," he said. "I heard you speaking to the gallerist earlier."

"You speak French?"

"Enough to recognize fluency." He moved to the next painting. I followed. "This one's better. The composition is tighter."

We walked through the rest of the exhibition together. He didn't ask about Blake. He didn't ask why I'd come alone. When we reached the exit, he straightened a catalog on the table beside the door. The same precise movement I'd seen at the dinner.

"It was good to see you again," he said.

"You too."

He left first. I stayed another ten minutes, then walked home.

Blake was waiting in my lobby.

He stood when he saw me, his face tight. "We need to talk."

I didn't stop walking. He followed me to the elevator.

"Who is he?" Blake demanded.

"Who?"

"Morgan Hoffman. I heard you were at that gallery thing with him."

I pressed the button for my floor. "I was at a gallery. He was also there."

"Don't play games, Emerie. I know you've been seeing him."

"Seeing him?" I turned to face him. "Like you've been seeing Jenna?"

His jaw tightened. "That's different."

"Is it?"

"Jenna is your friend. Morgan is—"

"What? A stranger? Someone I just met?" The elevator doors opened. I stepped out. "Interesting. I didn't realize you had opinions about my friendships. Given your own."

Blake followed me down the hall. "I'm serious. Stay away from him."

I stopped at my door and looked at him. Really looked. At the man I'd known for years. The man I'd trusted. The man who'd taken another woman stargazing while I sat alone.

"No," I said.

His eyes widened. "What?"

"I said no. You don't get to tell me who I can talk to. Not anymore."

I went inside and closed the door.

He knocked twice. Then silence.

I walked to my desk and opened my laptop. Diana had forwarded the file Morgan had sent. I looked at the photographs. Blake and Jenna at the Carlyle. Blake and Jenna in Montauk. Blake and Jenna in Verbier, walking toward the observatory.

I thought about Morgan's hand straightening the catalog. The quiet way he'd spoken about things that were just mine.

I picked up my phone and called Diana.

"Let's move forward," I said. "All of it."
