Chapter 1

My best friend said that we would delete each other's chat history before we died.

I believed her. I told her all my passwords.

On the night my mom had a car accident, my best friend deleted the call log. I didn't see my mom one last time.

When my dad was seriously ill and needed surgery, I found out the account balance was zero while paying the fees.

It was then that I realized that all the money had been secretly transferred away by my best friend.

I cried as I opened my eyes. I had actually gone back to the day when my best friend asked me for the passwords!

1

My best friend, Madelyn Jones, held my arm, looking at me affectionately. "Claire, we have so many secrets. We still need to delete them," she said.

I lay on the hospital bed. I vaguely realized that I had returned to the day she asked me for the passwords.

In my previous life, I had been accidentally injured. She hit my weak spot. I decisively told her all the passwords.

Thinking about it now, I was dead. What's the point of leaving a good name behind?

Looking at Madelyn before me, pretending to wipe her tears, I felt disgusted. It's truly sickening!

I smiled. I grabbed her phone. "Then you tell me your phone password first. You might die before me," I said.

Madelyn's expression changed. A trace of malice appeared in her eyes. "What nonsense are you talking about?!" she snapped.

I raised my eyebrows. I was about to enter the password on her phone.

Madelyn snatched the phone back. She decisively stuffed it into her pocket. "I can't remember the password. I usually use face recognition," she said.

I pretended to sigh. Suddenly, I acted as if I had thought of something. "It's okay. You can input my face data into your phone," I suggested.

Madelyn ignored my words. She placed a hand on my slightly bruised leg. She clenched her fist tightly.

My injury was completely an accident. Madelyn wanted to use this to control me.

I had no intention of telling her the passwords, so Madelyn's face darkened. She picked up her bag. She wanted to leave.

"Since you're not in any serious condition. There's no point in me staying here. I'll go shopping first," she said.

I grabbed Madelyn's hand and smiled brightly. "Madelyn, I was just joking. You can look at my phone whenever you want," I said.

I still told her all the passwords.

Not for any other reason. I just wanted to see what tricks she would pull this time.

Madelyn's attitude completely changed. She hugged me and refused to let go. "I knew I was your best friend. We don't need any secrets between us!" she said.

I didn't expose her hypocrisy. I silently transferred all the important information.

Madelyn was extremely happy. She became more attentive in taking care of me lately.

If I wanted coffee, she didn't dare to bring juice. If I wanted to wash my face, she didn't dare to offer to wash my feet first.

On the day I was discharged from the hospital, Madelyn specially gave me a teddy bear. She told me to place it in the most visible spot in the room.

Inside the teddy bear, there was a miniature camera she installed to monitor my every move.

In my previous life, she posted all the recorded footage on an unknown network. She made a lot of money from it.

I smiled and hugged the teddy bear. "Thank you, Madelyn," I said.

Since she wanted to record videos so badly, I couldn't let her down.

I placed the teddy bear in the most visible spot as soon as I got home. It was convenient for Madelyn to record all the details.

Madelyn and I shared an apartment. We usually hung out together.

That night, Madelyn pushed me into my room early. She even reminded me with concern. "You're injured. You should go to bed early," she said.

After closing the door, I dropped my smile. I took out my phone and decisively sent a string of messages to my brother.

On the first day of installing the surveillance, I didn't believe that Madelyn wouldn't secretly watch the live feed in the middle of the night.

Late at night, I changed into my pajamas and went to bed early. I made sure that Madelyn recorded some useful information.

I turned off the lights and quietly lay in bed. My eyes were fixed on the slightly open window.

Within an hour, a person dressed in all white floated into the room. They wandered back and forth beside my bed.

When the figure approached me, I saw their slightly frizzy wig and the tomato sauce on their face.

He smiled. He walked straight to the teddy bear. He even made a deliberately scary face.

From the next room, I heard a heart-wrenching scream. "There's a ghost! Help!"

I rushed over at the sound. I saw Madelyn crouching in the corner, trembling with her hands covering her head. She kept muttering something under her breath.

I patted Madelyn on the shoulder. "Madelyn, what's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?" I asked.

Madelyn looked around in terror. She grabbed my arm, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "Claire, did you feel someone walking around your bed just now?" she asked.

I pretended to be confused. I shook my head decisively. "No, I didn't. I slept soundly," I said.

Madelyn became even more distraught. But she couldn't say exactly what she saw. "But I just feel like there's something off about this house tonight," she said.

I turned on the light. I glanced at her phone lying on the bed. The screen was still on the surveillance page.

I smiled and helped Madelyn back to bed. "Don't be afraid. I heard that people with low energy might see things that aren't clean. We don't do bad things, so we don't need to fear ghosts knocking on our door," I said.

Madelyn noticed her phone was still on. She quickly stuffed it under the blanket. "I got it. Claire, you should go back to sleep!" she said.

The white figure continued to wander around the room.

I tried hard to hold back my laughter. I ignored him and went back to bed, lying down again.

My brother had climbed over from the balcony next door. He made Madelyn think the house was haunted.

The screams from the next room continued on and off until dawn. The figure finally started to retreat.

I had to admit, my brother was great at playing a ghost. He almost scared Madelyn out of her wits.

2

The next morning, Madelyn came into my room, looking exhausted. She took back the teddy bear.

I pressed down on her hand with dissatisfaction. "You just gave it to me yesterday, and now you're taking it back? That's so stingy!" I said.

Madelyn gave an awkward smile. "The manufacturer said there's a quality issue with the teddy bear. They asked me to return it and get a new one sent out," she said.

Such a poor excuse. Only Madelyn could come up with that.

I let go of her hand and lazily stretched. "I actually thought this teddy bear was nice. It made me feel like I had company and kept me warm at night. Why don't you try hugging it tonight?" I said.

Thinking about the scary experience from last night, Madelyn couldn't help but shiver. "I'd rather not. I'll just return it," she said.

She shook her head in disgust. She hugged the teddy bear and walked out without looking back.

I stood by the window, coldly watching Madelyn toss the teddy bear into the trash like it was garbage.

I took out my phone and called my brother. "It's done. There's one more thing. You need to go see Mom right now," I said.

In two weeks, it will be the day of Mom's car accident in my previous life.

Since I've been reborn, I don't want Mom to die in a car accident like she did in the last life.

Lately, Madelyn had been in a daze, as if she was possessed. She kept mumbling that a ghost was haunting her.

I thoughtfully took her to a fortune teller on the street, hoping she would recover soon.

The fortune teller frowned and shook his head. "Have you been doing too many bad things lately? You need to accumulate good deeds!" he said.

I got anxious and quickly gave the fortune teller a few hundred dollars. "Sir, do you have a way to break the curse?" I asked.

The fortune teller said that Madelyn needed to accumulate more yin virtue and refrain from harming others.

Madelyn insisted she had never done anything bad. But when she saw a beggar on the street, she gave him a few hundred dollars.

I laughed. "Didn't you say you didn't believe in this stuff?" I asked.

Madelyn looked uncomfortable but stubbornly replied, "I just felt sorry for them. I'm beautiful and kind-hearted, don't you get it?" she said.

I coldly laughed inside. Someone like Madelyn dared to call herself kind-hearted.

But in the past few days, Madelyn had turned into a kindness person. She gave each beggar a tip of at least five hundred dollars.

But Madelyn couldn't stay peaceful for even two days before she started causing trouble again.

In three days, it would be the day of Mom's car accident. I told my brother to stay by Mom's side at all times and not let her go to the market that day.

Mom listened to me and my brother. She didn't go to the market for several days.

But something unexpected still happened that day. Madelyn went to my house to find Mom without telling me.

Mom thought there was no food at home, so she took Madelyn along to the market.

The car accident still happened. By the time my brother called me, Mom was already in the hospital.

My heart skipped a beat. I didn't even hear the rest of what my brother was saying. "Don't say anything else. I'm coming to the hospital now!" I said.

It turned out that Mom's car accident was inevitable. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't change it.

When I hurried to the hospital, I saw my brother standing alone in the hallway, looking helpless.

My brother blinked his eyes and spoke with grievance, "Claire, I just went downstairs to take out the trash. At that time, Madelyn took Mom out."

I felt short of breath. I was afraid my brother would say the news I couldn't bear to hear in the next second.

My brother sighed. "Claire, you were right. The road near the market has had a lot of accidents lately," he said.

I struggled to hold onto the wall. I asked, word by word, "How is Mom?"

"Mom is fine. She only has minor scratches. But Madelyn...she's in trouble," he said.

Madelyn had multiple fractures all over her body. The oncoming car hit her and knocked her several miles away.

I couldn't hold back my laughter. My brother looked at me with a puzzled expression. "Claire, isn't Madelyn your best friend? Why are you so happy?" he asked.

I let out a cold laugh. "Best friend? More like a demon friend!" I sneered.

When I went to visit Madelyn in the hospital, I saw her lying on the bed, wrapped in bandages from head to toe.

Madelyn shot me a venomous look. "Your mom insisted on taking that shortcut, ignoring my advice. You need to compensate me for my medical expenses!" she demanded.

The car accident wasn't something my mom could have predicted. Besides, Madelyn suggested going to the market to buy food.

I glanced at her indifferently. "My mom's legs haven't been good lately. Yet you still insisted on taking her to the market. What were you trying to do?" I asked.

Madelyn struggled to sit up. She lashed out, trying to grab my hair. "It's all your fault, you bitch," she screamed.

I quickly grabbed her wrist, holding her in place. "Blame me for what? Blame me for not lending you money a few days ago, so you went to my house to borrow from my mom?" I asked coldly.

Mom had already told me why Madelyn came today. It was just to borrow money from her.

Madelyn gave up. Her wounds were tearing open and bleeding. "Claire, I need the money urgently. Can you lend me some, please?" she pleaded.

I didn't answer. I took out my phone and called Madelyn's alcoholic father. "Madelyn is in the hospital. Come quickly..." I said.

Madelyn's face turned pale. She grabbed my hand, pleading lowly, "Don't tell my dad. He'll kill me."

Madelyn had a bad home life. In my previous life, I pitied her. I always lent her money and even had my parents take her in as their goddaughter.

Every time her dad beat or scolded her, she would cry to me, saying her dad was inhuman.

I always stood up for her. I even got slapped several times by her dad because of it.

But I never expected that in the end, Madelyn would repay my kindness with betrayal, leading to the destruction of my family.

I shook off her hand and exposed her dad's gambling debts. "You pay off your dad's debts yourself. My home isn't a shelter for refugees, and my mom won't keep lending you money," I said.

Over the past three years, Madelyn had secretly borrowed at least fifty thousand dollars from my mom behind my back. My mom kept it hidden from me.

Madelyn shrank into the blanket, not daring to say a word. "Claire, I was wrong," she muttered.

Every time we argued, she would always pretend to be understanding and apologize.

Then she would use my guilt to make even more demands.

I went home with my mom. She had a minor scratch on her arm. Luckily, she avoided a disaster in this life.

Mom patted my hand and patiently explained, "Madelyn didn't do it intentionally. You two are best friends. Don't hold a grudge over this. Besides, look at how badly she's hurt."

I couldn't explain to Mom that I had been reborn. I could only tell her to stay away from Madelyn as much as possible.

Mom didn't listen. She continued to go to the hospital every day to bring Madelyn supplements.

Madelyn took advantage of Mom's soft heart. She sweet-talked her and even tricked her out of several thousand dollars.

By the time I found out about this, it was already the day Madelyn was being discharged from the hospital.

I took her home, ready to settle the accounts from these past few days. "Did you borrow money from my mom again?" I asked.

Madelyn affectionately held my arm. "Claire, you know I spent a lot of money during my hospital stay. Let's not count that right now," she said.

I gave her a side-eye. "Then what about the five thousand dollars you took from my mom a few days ago?" I asked.

Before I could finish, a sudden, urgent knocking on the door broke the tension.

Rather than knocking, it sounded more like someone was pounding on the door.

Looking through the peephole, I saw it was Madelyn's alcoholic father, holding a half-empty bottle of liquor.

I gave Madelyn a cold look. "How does your dad know about this place? Why did you bring him here?" I asked.

Madelyn shrank back and spoke lowly, "My dad has been asking me for money. I told him you owed me, so he came to collect from you."

The way her dad seemed so familiar with the place, it didn't look like this was his first time here.

Madelyn probably figured that since she had been in the hospital these past few days and I was alone at home, it would be the perfect time for her dad to come and ask for money.

Fortunately, I had been staying with my mom these past few days and hadn't been living here.

I was so angry I wanted to kick Madelyn out of the house right then. "Madelyn, are you crazy? You're the one who owes me money. Don't you get it?" I snapped.

Madelyn panicked. She grabbed my arm and threatened me in a cold voice, "If you dare not help me pay him, I'll push you out there. You know my dad doesn't hold back."

Her dad really was a piece of work. Back then, her mom had died in childbirth after he beat her while drunk.

And as for me, her dad caused my death.
