My Alpha Wanted His Mistress as Luna
Chapter 4
The bruises on my knees were purple and black by the time I made it back to our quarters.
I didn't turn on the lights. I sat on the edge of the mattress with my hands flat on my thighs, staring at the moonlight cutting across the rug. I didn't move for a long time. The house around me was completely quiet. Downstairs, the lingering smell of roasted meat and spilled alcohol slowly faded into the damp draft of the mountains.
A soft, heavy weight leaned against my left knee.
Duke sat beside me. His grey fur was thick and cool from the night air, and he rested his massive head against my ribs, letting out a low, slow breath. I lifted my hand and buried my fingers into the ruff of his neck. I felt the steady, rhythmic thump of his heart beneath my palm. Duke didn't need me to produce an heir. He didn't care that I had no wolf. He just breathed with me in the dark.
"Good boy," I whispered.
The tremor in my chest finally stopped.
I stood up, walked to the armoire, and pulled out my leather-bound ledger. I carried it to the desk and switched on a single low lamp. Page by page, I reviewed the file I had built. The offshore wire transfers. The burner phone transcripts. The tuition receipt stamped with the private school seal.
Then, I turned to the final blank page at the very back.
I stared at the white space and reviewed the formal words of the rejection vow. Every single syllable.
*I, Victoria, Luna of Shadowridge, reject you, Jared, as my mate and Alpha.*
I didn't speak the sentence aloud. Words carried power in a werewolf house, and Jared’s wolf was always listening for dissent. I kept the words behind my teeth. I rolled them over in my head, feeling the sharp, clean edges of each sound. I committed them to the back of my mind, locking them into the same quiet vault where I kept everything else that could never be taken back.
I closed the ledger with a soft click. The banquet had been a rehearsal of my humiliation. The next one would be the execution of his.

Forty miles away, across the southern boundary line, the tracker I had hired earned every penny of my inheritance money.
Corvin sent his updates in encrypted batches twice a day. Jared’s visits to the secluded stone cabin had grown noticeably shorter over the last two weeks. He stayed twenty minutes instead of two hours. His promises had turned vague and slippery, sliding from *the winter solstice* to *early spring*.
Malia was not a patient woman. Her entire existence, her security, and the future she envisioned for her boy depended on the title Jared had promised her. She was smart enough to smell an Alpha stalling.
On Tuesday morning, Corvin sent three photographs.
The first showed Malia stepping out of an exclusive formal boutique in the neutral shopping district. She carried an ivory garment bag zipped tight, her chin tilted at a sharp, arrogant angle.
The second photo showed her at an outdoor cafe with a trusted she-wolf from her old territory, pointing at the dress bag with a wide, possessive smile.
The third was a grainy shot through the window of her stone den. Malia stood in front of a full-length mirror, wearing an ivory gown laced with silver thread along the collarbone—a dress cut specifically for an incoming Luna’s presentation. Anakin sat on the floor near her feet, playing with a wooden car. According to Corvin’s audio clip, she was rehearsing her steps, lifting her skirts, and smoothing her hair with the bright, fierce confidence of someone who truly believed she was chosen.
She was done waiting for Jared to hand her the crown. She was going to walk into the packhouse and take it before a room full of witnesses.
I deleted the photos from my phone and cleared the cache. Malia thought she was walking into her coronation. She had no idea she was stepping onto the scaffold Jared had built for both of them.

The night before the next Pack Banquet arrived with a heavy frost that coated the cedar trees outside our window.
Jared came to bed late, smelling of bourbon and cold pine needles. He slid under the duvet, his body broad and warm. For a few minutes, there was only the sound of his breathing.
Then, the mate bond twitched.
Jared reached across our mental link. It wasn't the harsh strike of his Alpha tone, nor was it the greasy warmth he used when he wanted to smooth things over. It was a low, resonant hum—the kind of idle, probing reassurance an Alpha sent out when he felt a strange draft in the house and couldn't pinpoint where the window was open. He sensed the stillness in me. He just didn't know what it meant.
I didn't fight him. I didn't push back with anger, and I didn't send him affection.
I let my side of the bond go completely flat. I turned the connection into dead, grey stone. I received his probe, absorbed the vibration, and gave back nothing.
Beside me, Jared shifted. Through our link, I felt his wolf circle around the perimeter of my silence. The beast sniffed at the quiet, found no rebellion, and decided it was simply fatigue. *She’s broken,* his mind concluded with casual arrogance. *She’s quiet because she knows her place now.*
His breathing slowed, deepening into a heavy, uninterrupted snore.
I waited twenty minutes until his chest rose and fell in a dead rhythm.
I swung my legs out from under the blanket, my bare feet making no sound against the hardwood floor. I took the leather evidence dossier from beneath my sweater drawer. I walked down the back staircase, avoiding the third step that always groaned, and stepped into the cold utility room by the back door.
In the corner sat Duke’s heavy iron travel crate. It smelled of raw cedar chips, dried beef, and hound. Jared hated the crate. He hated Duke. He had never once touched the latch, claiming the entire corner smelled of mutt and failure.
I knelt down. Duke lifted his head from inside the crate, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim moonlight. He gave a soft wag of his tail against the wire frame.
I slid the thick leather ledger into the false bottom beneath his fleece bed, pulling the wool lining smooth over the top.
"Keep it safe, Duke," I whispered.
Duke lowered his chin over his paws, resting his muzzle directly above the hidden papers.
I stood, walked back up the stairs, and climbed into bed next to the man who thought he owned me. I pulled the duvet up to my chin, closed my eyes, and went to sleep.
