My Alpha Wanted His Mistress and My Luna Mark

Seven years of letters, stolen calls, and patient waiting end the moment Lyra crosses her alpha mate's threshold. The house reeks of another woman—floral, foreign, woven into every curtain. Then Florence appears, soft and practiced, a Silverfang mark on her wrist, a small boy clutching her sleeve with the same brand. The mark that once burned Lyra's neck now claims a family she never knew existed. Her homecoming becomes a raw confrontation with betrayal, as the mate who swore he'd wait reveals a life built entirely without her.

Chapter 3

The third night, I couldn't sleep at all.

I lay flat on my back in the guest bed, my bandaged hand throbbing on my stomach, and I listened to the pack house breathe. Old wood creaking. Wind at the eaves. And underneath all of it, something I hadn't noticed the first two nights — a thin, cool draft slipping up through the floorboards near the far wall, carrying with it a smell that made my throat close.

Pine and iron. Floral sweetness. Braided so tight I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.

I sat up slowly.

The draft was steady. Real. Coming from somewhere below the house that shouldn't have existed.

I slid out of bed in bare feet and followed it down the corridor. Past the Alpha quarters. Past that narrow door beneath the stairs I'd noticed the first night. The scent grew stronger the closer I got. My wolf, quiet all day, lifted her head inside me like a hound catching a trail.

The door wasn't locked. It opened onto the back of a wardrobe — a heavy oak thing shoved flush against a wall. Except the wall behind it wasn't a wall. When I pressed my palm to the wood, it gave. A hinge. A seam. A concealed door.

I pushed.

A staircase spiraled down into warm lamplight.

The scent hit me halfway down. Not a whiff. A wave. Three years of it, layered and layered and layered, the way lovers' scents only bond in a space where they've slept together, eaten together, curled around each other night after night after night.

I reached the bottom step and stopped breathing.

It was a den. A full den. Low ceiling, thick rugs, a wide bed piled with mating furs. Solstice ribbons still hung from the beams — last winter's, the winter before, the one before that, faded in layers. A rack of hunt-feast antlers on the far wall. And taped in a neat row above the bed: three crayon drawings on lined paper. A tall man with dark hair. A woman in a yellow dress. A small boy between them.

Daddy. Mommy. Me.

I walked to the bed without feeling my feet. I lifted the top fur into my arms.

The scent detonated in my face.

Cassius. Lia. Together. Not brushed against each other in a hallway. Not sharing a couch. Woven. Bonded. The kind of scent that only happens when two wolves rut into the same furs season after season until their pheromones bleed into the fibers.

My wolf did not scratch. She did not scrape.

She howled.

It tore up through my chest in a sound I couldn't let out of my mouth, a raw ragged howl that shook every rib and rattled the mate mark on my neck like a bell. My knees hit the rug. I pressed the fur to my face and let her howl inside me until there was nothing left in my lungs.

Then I stood up. I folded the fur under my arm. I climbed the stairs, closed the wardrobe, and walked back to the guest room in the dark.

I sat on the edge of the bed with the fur across my knees until the window turned gray.

I didn't cry. My wolf howled and howled and I let her, and I made a list in my head instead.

Three years of scent-bonded furs. Tru's drawings labeled Daddy. Lia's Silverfang mark. Barnaby curled on that boy's bed. Maren's pity. The pack calling her by name. Cassius's arm around her waist in the kitchen while my hand blistered six feet away.

By the time the sun cleared the trees, I was calm. Not numb. Calm. The kind of calm that has decided.

I knew Cassius's schedule. Seven years of letters had taught me that much. Daily briefing at eight, Beta and Gamma in the study, coffee on the desk, door closed.

I folded the fur, tucked it under my bandaged arm, and walked.

***

I didn't knock.

Ronan was mid-sentence when I pushed the door open — something about patrol rotations — and Sable was leaning against the window with a tablet. Cassius sat behind the desk in a white shirt, sleeves rolled, coffee steaming at his elbow. He looked up, surprised, and started to smile.

I dropped the fur on his desk.

The scent bloomed outward like something living. Ronan's nostrils flared once, twice, and his whole body went still. Sable's hand rose slowly to cover her mouth. The tablet clattered against the sill.

Cassius's face went white.

"Florence—"

"Explain it." My voice was quiet. It didn't shake. "Explain to me why your scent and hers have been mating-bonded into these furs for three years."

His eyes cut to Ronan. To Sable. Back to me. He couldn't order them to unsmell what their own noses had already told them.

His aura crashed through the room in a hot rolling wave, the Alpha tone loading into his throat. "Florence. Stop."

I didn't stop.

"Did the life-debt include the mating den under the stairs?" I asked. "Did Tru's traumatized wolf require his mother to sleep in your bed?"

Sable made a small sound behind her hand.

"Which solstice was it, Cassius?" My voice stayed level. "The first one? The second? Which winter did you hang the ribbons?"

His knuckles went white on the edge of the desk.

And inside my chest, my wolf stopped howling — and started to watch.
