Chapter 2

Three days after the rejection, I was restocking the Healing Hall's upper shelves when Helena walked in.

She didn't knock. She never did anymore. She moved through the pack house like she already owned it, which I supposed she did now. Future Luna. Chosen mate. The title sat on her like a crown she'd been waiting her whole life to wear.

"Olivia," she said, her voice carrying that practiced gentleness that made my skin crawl. "I need to speak with you about the serum batch."

I didn't turn around. I kept organizing vials — wolfsbane extract, arnica tincture, valerian root. My parents had taught me that a Healer's workspace was sacred. Every item labeled. Every ingredient catalogued. Order was the foundation of healing. I clung to that order now like it was the only thing keeping me upright.

"Which batch?" I asked.

"The one designated for my treatment cycle." She stepped closer. I heard the rustle of fabric, smelled her perfume — something floral and cloying that didn't quite mask the scent underneath. "It's been corrupted."

I stopped. Set down the vial in my hand. Turned to face her.

She held up a glass container. The compound inside was discolored — a sickly greenish-brown instead of the clear amber it should have been. She tilted it slightly, letting the overhead light catch the murky liquid.

"You're the only one with access to that synthesis bench," she said softly. "I'm not accusing you of anything deliberate. I know you've been... under strain. But this needs to be addressed."

I looked at the vial. Then at her face. Her expression was sympathetic, concerned, perfectly calibrated. But her eyes were flat. Empty.

"I didn't corrupt that batch," I said.

"I'm sure it was an accident." She set the vial on my workbench between us. "But Alec needs to know. For pack safety. You understand."

She left before I could respond.

I stood there staring at the discolored compound, running synthesis variables through my mind. Contamination patterns. Environmental factors. Deliberate sabotage versus accidental degradation. The formula was complex — one I'd perfected over months of careful calibration specifically for Helena's supposed condition. If it had corrupted, there would be a traceable cause.

I was still analyzing possibilities when Alec walked in.

He didn't look at me directly. He hadn't since the rejection. His gaze fixed somewhere past my shoulder, his jaw tight.

"Helena showed me the vial," he said. His voice was cold. Controlled. The Alpha voice, but quieter. More dangerous. "Explain."

"I didn't corrupt it," I said. "If you'll let me access the raw materials, I can demonstrate the synthesis process from start to finish. We can identify where the contamination occurred."

"You had exclusive access to that bench."

"Environmental contamination is possible. Temperature fluctuation. Humidity. Even trace amounts of—"

"Enough."

The word hit me like a physical blow. Not the word itself, but the tone — the Alpha tone, the one that carried command weight, that bypassed rational thought and went straight to the wolf's instinct to submit. My wolf was still silent, still collapsed somewhere deep inside me, but my body responded anyway. My throat closed. My words died.

I stood there, mouth open, unable to speak.

Alec stepped closer. His dark cedar and thunderstorm scent washed over me, and the bond's phantom ache flared in my chest. He still wouldn't look directly at me.

"You will be confined to the containment cell until you reproduce the formula to Helena's satisfaction," he said. "Beta Marcus will escort you."

Marcus appeared in the doorway as if he'd been waiting. His expression was carefully neutral. He wouldn't meet my eyes either.

I tried to speak. The Alpha tone still held. I couldn't force sound past my lips.

Alec turned and walked out.

Marcus gestured toward the corridor. "This way."

I followed because I had no choice.

---

The containment cell was underground, beneath the pack house's east wing. I'd never been down here before. Healers didn't need to know about the places where the pack kept its prisoners.

The walls were lined with silver.

I understood what that meant the moment Marcus opened the door. Silver suppressed a wolf's healing ability. It burned on contact. A silver-lined cell wasn't just confinement. It was torture.

"How long?" I asked. My voice came out rough. The Alpha tone had finally released its hold.

Marcus didn't answer. He gestured for me to enter.

I stepped inside. The door closed behind me with a heavy metallic sound that echoed in the small space. I heard the lock engage. Then Marcus's footsteps retreating down the corridor. Then nothing.

The cell was maybe six feet by eight feet. A single overhead light fixture. No windows. No water. The walls gleamed dully in the artificial light, that telltale silver sheen that made my skin crawl even before I touched anything.

I pressed my back against the far wall and slid down to sit on the floor, careful to keep my exposed skin from touching the silver. But there was nowhere to go that didn't involve contact. The floor was concrete, but the walls were close. Too close.

I pulled my knees to my chest and started running synthesis variables through my mind.

Valerian root extract. Arnica tincture. Wolfsbane in carefully measured trace amounts. Moonflower oil as the binding agent. The process took six hours from raw materials to final compound. Temperature had to be maintained within a three-degree range. Humidity couldn't exceed forty percent.

Three environmental factors could cause discoloration without deliberate corruption. Temperature spike during the binding phase. Contamination from residual compounds on unwashed glassware. Or degradation from exposure to direct sunlight during the cooling period.

I wrote them on the inside of my wrist with my fingernail, scratching the skin just deep enough to leave marks. Then I realized the marks would fade. I needed something permanent.

I bit my lip hard enough to draw blood. Used my finger to write the three variables on my wrist in my own blood. The letters were shaky, crude, but readable.

Then I waited.

The silver burned wherever my shoulders touched the wall. I shifted position. My hip brushed the metal. Pain flared, sharp and immediate. I shifted again. My elbow. My knee. There was no position that didn't hurt.

Hours passed. I counted them by the throb of pain, by the way my wolf's silence deepened into something that felt like absence. The overhead light never changed. I had no way to know if it was day or night above ground.

I thought about my parents. About the fire that took them. About the way their Healing Hall had burned so completely that there was almost nothing left to salvage except my mother's moon-pendant and a handful of scorched journals.

I thought about Alec's document. Bloodline synthesis value. Maintain productive distance.

I thought about Helena's empty eyes.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my palm and kept waiting.

---

When the door finally opened, I didn't know how long it had been. My skin was raw where it had touched the silver. My throat was dry. My wolf was so deeply silent I couldn't feel her at all.

Alec stood in the doorway. He looked at the blood on my wrist. At the burns on my shoulders. His expression didn't change.

"The formula," he said.

I held up my wrist. Showed him the three variables written in dried blood.

"Environmental contamination," I said. My voice came out as a rasp. "Temperature spike, residual compound contamination, or sunlight exposure during cooling. Check the synthesis logs against environmental monitoring data. You'll find the cause."

He stared at the writing on my wrist for a long moment. Then he stepped aside.

"Reproduce it," he said. "Marcus will escort you to the Healing Hall."

I walked past him without speaking. The bond's phantom ache flared as I moved through his scent radius, but I didn't stop. I didn't look back.

In the Healing Hall, I reproduced the formula from raw materials while Marcus watched. Every step precise. Every measurement exact. Six hours later, I handed Alec a vial of clear amber compound, identical to every batch I'd ever synthesized.

He took it without comment. Turned to leave.

"The contamination was environmental," I said to his back. "The formula was never corrupted. You locked me in a silver cell for nothing."

He paused in the doorway. Didn't turn around.

"You're dismissed," he said.

Then he was gone.

I stood alone in the Healing Hall, my skin still burning, my wolf still silent.

I pulled out my synthesis journal. Opened it to a blank page. And I began embedding traceable markers into every formula I would produce from this day forward.

Chemical signatures invisible to anyone without my specific knowledge. Permanent. Irrefutable proof of authorship.

I worked methodically, formula by formula, as if I were simply labeling inventory.

I told no one.
